Streaker Ramblings - Numbum Races 7 & 8 - 28/01/2018

Overcast grey skies as we left Hove with a light breeze from the west. On arrival at Piddinghoe conditions were similar and the RO, John Freeman, assisted by Emma Briggs as ARO and Dave Murley on safety boat duty, with some outside help set up the course as shown below. The start line was close to the first slipway, east of the compound entrance with a mark of the south bank. The breeze had built up a bit and was strong enough to allow planing on the reaches.

At the gun Paul Ryan (Laser full rig – Hardway) was first across the line close to the south bank. In mid line it was Jonty Freeman (Laser Radial – NSSC) almost simultaneously with Phil Clare (Laser Radial) just to leeward who was third away. The rest of the fleet were a bit late and still coming into the line on port tack. Paul was first to round the windward mark off the clubhouse with Rupert Smith (Streaker – NSSC), who had also started close to the south bank , behind him and ahead of Jonty. Alan Simmons (Streaker – Lancing) was almost last to start in eighteen strong fleet  and had a lot of catching up to do.

Along the leg from the clubhouse mark to that off the Fisherman’s Bay he sailed low and made a few gains. At the front Paul and Jonty were fighting for the lead with Rupert not far behind.

On the leg behind the Island Rupert capsized and Alan thought he had caught up a bit more but he sailed to the south of the Island (and took the same course in the following lap - the wrong side) and was disqualified as he found at the end of the race. Paul and Jonty continued to fight for the lead but it was Jonty first over the line at the end of the first lap with Chris Foster (Laser full rig – Lancing) finally gaining some ground after a not too clever start. Phil Clare was fourth ahead of Duncan McDonald (Streaker – NSSC) with Roger McCall (Laser full rig – Pevensey) sixth and Alan behind him. Next came Mike Rosier (Laser Radial – NSSC) in eighth place with Bill Wates (Laser full rig – NSSC) . tenth to cross the line was Tim Mellor (laser full rig – NSSC) ahead of Roan Briggs (Topper – NSSC) and Geoff Sheridan (Byte – NSSC) then Oliver Wattam (Topper – NSSC)Rupert having recovered from his swim was fourteenth  to cross ahead of Richard Beal (Laser Radial – NSSC), Terry Jones (Comet – NSSC), Ed Rollestone (Oppie – NSSC) with Penelope Duncan (Laser Radial – NSSC) retiring.

Lap 2 and the front runners were Jonty 3 seconds ahead of Paul with Chris closing the gap another 8 seconds behind Paul. Phil dropped back to 7th as Roger and Alan continued a close tussle around the course. Rupert continued to pull back climbing four place to lie 10th ahead of Tim. Roan fell back to 13th astern of Geoff as Terry claimed Richard’s scalp to go 14th and Oliver dropped to 16th with Ed understandingly still at the back of the fleet.

Lap 3 and Chris went ahead of Paul but with Jonty still leading both only 8 seconds between 1st and 3rd places. Duncan, Roger and  Alan stayed 4th, 5th and 6th respectively. Rupert put on another spurt climbing to 7th as Tim also went up to 8th as Phil slipped back to 10th.Mike lost ground to lie 11th with Roan gaining a place to lie 12th behind him. Geoff, Terry, Richard, Oliver and Ed remained in the same relative positions as in the previous lap.

Lap 4 Jonty was 5 seconds ahead of Chris with Paula further 3 seconds astern. The next six places were unchanged from lap 3. Mike moved up to lie 10 with Phil retiring and Geoff went ahead of 12th placed Roan. Terry, Richard, Oliver and Ed remained 13th to 16th.

Lap 5 And Paul took the lead from Chris with Jonty dropping back to third place and having Duncan closing in. Roger was pulling away from Alan and Rupert closing in on Alan, now just 7 seconds astern. Bill went back ahead of Tim to lie 7th and Geoff got ahead of Roan and Mike to lie 10th with Terry and Richard 13th and 14th.
Lap 6 the final lap and Paul pulled ahead of Chris to cross the line first with Jonty third and Duncan fourth. Roger was fifth and Rupert 6th, Alan would have been 7th had he sailed the correct course but that place fell to Bill ahead of last to finish Tim.

With Handicaps applied Jonty was the winner with Paul second, Duncan third and Chris fourth.

The second Race of the day was held over the same course with the fleet again heading down the line towards the shore. It was Paul again first to cross at the shore end with Roger just to leeward as they both crossed on port tack and Jonty further down the line and third away. Rupert also got a good start ahead of Chris with Duncan furthest towards the pin mark.

Jonty was first to the clubhouse (windward) mark with Rupert next and Paul outside him. Chris was next to round and set off on the reach along the west shore. Jonty pulled ahead on this leg with Roger closing in on Chris with Duncan behind him and Alan further astern.

By the beat back toward the middle of the pond Jonty was in the lead with Rupert and Chris close behind. Rupert had another upset, it is believed he caught up the mooring line on one of the marks as by the end of the lap he had fallen back astern of Alan to lie 7th.At the line Jonty led Chris by 22 seconds with Paul third, Roger fourth and Duncan fifth. Mike was 8th round, Tim 9th, Bill 10th and Roan 11th. Terry was lying 12th, Oliver 13th, Richard 14th, and Ed 15th. Phil, Geoff and Penelope did not sail in this race.

In Lap 2 Chris passed Jonty  but Paul could not. Duncan went ahead of Roger and Rupert caught and passed Alan. Mike dropped back to lie tenth allowing Tim and Bill to get ahead of him. Terry passed Roan to lie eleventh and Richard went ahead of Oliver to lie thirteenth with Ed last man at fifteenth.

Lap 3 Chris stretched his lead over Jonty to 12 seconds as Paul made no further inroads over him. There were no changes of order , from lap 2, down to Oliver in 13th with Ed, 14th, as Richard retired.

Lap 4 and Chris continued to pull ahead of Jonty, now 22 seconds in the lead as Paul fell back slightly with Duncan hot on his heels – just 9 seconds behind, There were no places changes in the rest of the fleet but Alan closed in a smidgen on Rupert.

Lap 5, the final lap, and there were just ten boats still sailing. At the final Gun it was Chris first across the line 28 seconds ahead of Jonty with Paul third, Duncan fourth just 5 seconds behind. Roger was fifth, Rupert sixth, Alan 7th, Tim eighth, Bill ninth and Mike tenth. With handicaps applied Jonty was the winner again with Chris second, Duncan third, and Paul fourth.

A good racing session with winds strong enough to give some thrills, a bit gusty but not too extreme and enjoyable for all As a bit of added interest Paul Ryan decided to capsize just before the finish line in the first Race and Oliver Wattam did the same in the second race.
