Streaker Ramblings - Numbum Race 13 & 14 - 18.02.2018

Streaker Ramblings Race 13 & 13 – 18.02.2018

There were predominantly Blue skies with patches of grey and white cloud and with a gentle breeze when leaving Hove for Piddinghoe. On arrival conditions were similar with the light breeze coming from the south west over the car park.

The Race Officer, Zoe McCaig assisted by Emma Briggs set a course with the start from a laid back line from the ‘Playhouse’ jetty to a mark off the west bank. The line turned out to be a trifle short for the seventeen boats signed on for the first race with just a short leg to the ‘windward mark in the south west corner as can be seen below.

At the gun it was Duncan McDonald (Streaker – NSSC) who was first away at the shore end of the linewith Alan Simmons (Streaker – Lancing) second away. Just a tad behind but to weather Laurence Venus (Streaker – NSSC) was third to cross the line and first to the turning mark with Alan just behind.

Next to round were Michael Veale and Mike Rosier (RS200 – NSSC), Chris Foster (Laser full rig – Lancing) then Duncan with Roger McCall (Pevensey) a little astern. The leg down the south shore was a beat which occasionally freed off a little.

Laurence turned the south east mark in the lead followed by Alan along the run behind the Island with Michael hoisting his gennaker to quickly pass Alan. On the following broad reach Michael headed for the correct mark, off the Fisherman’s Bay, unlike Laurence who had to harden up half way along the leg and lose some of this lead.

On the subsequent beat toward the mark off the north side of the Island Michael took the lead and Duncan went ahead of Alan with Chris not far astern and Ed Thorburn (Finn – NSSC) was also closing in. Up the last windward leg of the lap the three Streakers were just 5 seconds apart, Alan and Duncan crossing at the same time, with Michael 14 seconds ahead.
Ed.T was fifth to cross the line with Chris next home. Roger crossed in seventh place with Dave Murley (Lasee Radial –NSSC) next and then Bill Wates (Laser full rig – NSSC) in ninth position.
Brandon Rudd sailing single handed in a Laser II (Plumpton Coll) was in tenth place ahead of Geoff Sheridan (Byte – NSSC) and with Penelope Duncan (Laser Radial – NSSC) next. Richard Beal (Laser Radial – NSSC) was thirteenth to finish the lap ahead of Lucy McCaig and Millie Swallow (Feva – NSSC). Terry Jones (Comet – NSSC) held fifteenth place ahead of the two youngsters Ed Rollestone and Thomas Beck (NSSC) in their first full race in a Cadet dinghy with Connie Sturt bringing up the tail in her Slipper (NSSC).

Lap 3 and Ed.T took over the lead passing Michael and Laurence to cross the line 10 seconds in front. In this lap the battle between Chris and Duncan continued with Chris retaining fourth place this time around. Roger snuck up on Alan and went ahead with Bill, Dave and Brandon in unchanged places. Penelope overtook Geoff to lie eleventh and Terry stayed in thirteenth spot as Richard went ahead of Lucy with no change at the back for Ed.R and Connie.

Lap 4 Saw Laurence passing Ed.T and Michael to take the lead as Duncan also passed Chris. There were no place changes further down the fleet from positions held in lap 3.

Lap 5 and Ed.T regained the lead from Laurence with Chris now up to third and ahead of Michael.and Duncan. Roger was still sixth ahead of Alan, Bill, Dave, Brandon, Penelope and Geoff as Lucy went ahead of Terry and Richard with Ed.R fifteenth.

Lap 6 the penultimate lap had Ed.T holding the lead from Laurence by a minute and a half with Chris still third and the next nine placings remained unchanged.

Lap 7 was sailed solely by Ed.T all the rest having finished at the end of lap 6.

With handicaps applied the winner was Laurence with Duncan second, Chris third and Alan fourth.

The second race was sailed over the same course in a very slightly reduced breeze at the top end of force 3. The breeze had had a few puffs into force four in the first race.

At the gun there was almost complete mayhem as Roger was over the line near the shore and going back to the correct side with Duncan attempting to cross at that end too. It was little better at the pin end with Penelope next away but with Geoff and then Laurence below her.

Duncan squeezed through followed by Chris and then Roger still on starboard tack. Alan found a hole to windward of the Lucy close up to the pin end of the line and at least had clear air. Laurence meanwhile had Michael to weather and Terry dead ahead, also on starboard.

Duncan rounded the weather mark with a good lead with Chris next and Penelope third to turn with Alan fourth in the order and off onto the long windward leg to the mark in the south east corner of the pond. Laurence finally extricated himself and round just after but to weather of Geoff but with Bill ahead of him. Ed.T had also been caught up in the general melee and was about eighth and just ahead of Michael.
At the end of the lap the order settled to Duncan lading Chris by 7 seconds with Alan third, Laurence fourth and Ed.T fifth. Michael was in sixth place with Dave seventh, Penelope eighth and Bill ninth. The miscreant Roger was only able to take a tenth place with Ian Johnson (Laser Radial; - NSSC), having arrived too late for the first race, holding eleventh spot. Brandon was twelfth, Geoff thirteenth, Richard fourteenth and Terry fifteenth. Lucy was in sixteenth position ahead of Ed.R and Connie.

Lap 2 and Duncan held off the challenge from Chris even pulling away to cross 24 seconds in front. Ed.T went ahead of Alan and Laurence as Michael retained sixth place. Roger gained from Dave, Penelope and Bill to lie seventh a minute behind Michael. Dave dropped back to fourteenth as Brandon went up to eleventh, Geoff to twelfth, and Richard to thirteenth. Terry, Lucy and Connie remained in the same order as in the previous lap.

Lap 3 saw Chris close in on Duncan to lie 11 seconds astern at the line with Ed.T a further 5 seconds behind. Alan retained fourth place having a right royal tussle with Laurence with Michael just behind this pair in sixth place. Bill stayed ahead of Ian as these two passed Penelope and Geoff went ahead of Brandon. Dave clawed back a place to lie fourteenth just ahead – 1 second – of Terry with Lucy, Ed.R and Connie in unchanged order.

Lap 4 and Ed.T went into the lead ahead of Duncan, albeit by 6 seconds, also passing Chris.  Alan held off further challenges from Laurence but still held onto fourth place. Michael also stayed ahead, in sixth place, of Roger with a slightly smaller lead. Bill retained eighth place as Penelope overtook Ian and Geoff dropped back to lie thirteenth behind Brandon and Dave. Terry made a gain going ahead of Richard as Lucy led Ed.T home to their finish.

Lap 5 Ed.T extended his lead over Duncan to 36 seconds as Chris held onto third place. Alan and Laurence, with Michael also in the picture, continued their scrap right up to the line with Alan crossing 5 seconds ahead of the pair who could not be separated on times. Roger and Bill, seventh and eighth, still stayed in the same relative positions as Ian swept ahead of Penelope . The order, lower down the fleet, remained unchanged from the previous lap.

Lap 6 and it was left for Ed.T to complete the ‘lap of honour, all others having already finished the race.

With Handicaps applied the winner was declared as Duncan with Chris second, Alan third and Laurence fourth.

Some very close ‘battles’ in both races providing some excitement and entertaining racing in very pleasant conditions. Not too energetic but down to a lot of tactical racing.
