Streaker Ramblings - Freeman Iceberg Races 7 & 8 - 26/11/2016

Clear Blue sky, bright sunshine and a cold westerly breeze as we left for Piddinghoe. On arrival in the compound there was no breeze close to the clubhouse but a fair bit ‘offshore’, by the start of race 7 it was a good force four and the top end of that. Race Officer John Freeman (with Chas Humphries as ARO and D Hitchens as safety boat helm) set a course similar to that used for the past two Sundays, namely an ‘M’ shape but with a start (and Gate) from close to the middle slipway on the south shore.

 

 

 



At the gun it was Jonty Freeman (Laser full rig - NSSC) who crossed the line first, in mid line, with Noel West (Streaker – NSSC) and Chris Foster (Laser full rig – Lancing) third away. Jonty was first to round the windward mark, off the clubhouse, and followed by Noel with Duncan McDonald (Streaker – NSSC) alongside and Chris behind. Tim Cox (Laser Radial – NSSC) was not far behind and as they traversed the reach Noel ran out of puff and let Duncan get away.

Behind them Alan Simmons (Streaker – Lancing) led Rupert Smith (Streaker – NSSC) along the downwind leg to the mark to the north of the Island and across to the mark off the east bank.

Alan and Rupert then closed up on Tim and Noel and Alan took an inside berth at the mark in the south east corner to start the long beat up the south shore. Tim went ahead of Alan up this leg as did Rupert but Alan stayed ahead of Andy Hamilton (Laser full rig).The finishing order for the first lap was Jonty 1^st, Duncan 2^nd, Chris 3^rd, Rupert 4^th, Tim 5^th, Andy.H 6^th, Alan 7^th, Noel 8^th, Julian 9^th, Thomas Beck (Oppie – NSSC) 10th , Tiger Cox (Topper – NSSC) 11^th, Roan Briggs (Topper – NSSC) 12^th, Geoff Hamilton (Byte – NSSC) 13^th, Terry Jones (Comet – NSSC) 14^th, Jazz Turner (Slipper – NSSC) 15^th, Toby Holmes-Ling (Oppie – NSSC) 16^th, Andy Beck (Laser Radial – NSSC) 17^th, Ed Rollestone (Oppie – NSSC) 18^th and Paul Ryan (Laser  full rig – Hardway) 19^th , he having been still ashore when the race started sorting out a problem with his rudder.

In lap 2 Jonty remained in the lead with Duncan, Chris, Rupert and Tim in the same respective order as the previous lap. Alan had a disaster when he went off to the Start line ODM instead of the mark to the north of the Island allowing Paul and Julian to catch up and pass him. Roan and Tiger were having a battle which Roan won as Andy.B made up a bit of ground passing Toby, Terry and Jazz. Terry had also been having slight problems with boat control and was finished at the end of the lap as Thomas slipped to tail end Charlie astern of Ed in 18^th place.

Lap 3 saw Paul climb even higher to lie in 2^nd place behind Jonty but ahead of Duncan. Rupert fell back to lie 6^th with Tim and Noel passing him. It is thought that Chris had a swim and difficulty getting back under control as he lost about nine places to lie 12^th. Jazz got ahead of Ed and Toby toile 15^th.

Lap 4 and whilst Jonty held the lead Duncan fought back and overtook Paul to lie second at the end of the lap. Noel went ahead of Tim to 4^th place  with Rupert retaining sixth position at the end of the lap and Andy.H, Julian, Alan and Roan also stayed in their same relative positions. Chris regained a place by passing Tiger and Andy.B went ahead of Geoff. At the back Toby went in front of Jazz.

 Lap 5 was sailed by  just nine boats, the rest having finished , with Jonty leading Paul, Noel 2^nd and Andy.H fourth ahead of Alan who overtook Julian to finish fifth with Chris by then back up to seventh and just the two Toppers behind.

Lap 6 was sailed only by Jonty and Rupert.

Race 7 - 26.11.17

Race 8 was sailed over the same course but with a few changes in the fleet. Duncan did not sail, neither did Julian. The first start was aborted when one of the Oppies and most of the fleet were deemed to be over the line. Alan and Terry breathed a sigh of relief as they had both gotten themselves  in close proximity but going nowhere with no breeze at the back of the fleet.

For the second start an Oppie, Toby,  was dead on the line with Roan to weather and Alan to weather of him but with just enough water from the mark. To weather of these three was Jonty just above Noel. Alan with clear air head up the beat until close to the clubhouse mark he ran out of breeze and Chris, Tim and Jonty all passed inside him to set off along the north shore to the mark off the Fisherman’s Bay.

Along that leg Rupert, Noel and Paul all went past him. The order at the end of the first lap was Jonty 1^st, Chris 2^nd, Tim 3^rd, Paul 4^th, Rupert 5^th, Noel 6^th, Andy.H 7^th, Alan 8^th, Tiger 9^th, Geoff 10^th, Terry 11^th, Roan 12^th, Andy.B 13^th, Jazz 14^th, Ed 15^th, Toby 16^th and Thomas 17^th.

Lap 2 and Rupert caught and passed Jonty to lead the fleet Paul was up to 3^rd having passed Tim who in turn dropped back to 7^th. The breeze was somewhat lighter than for race 7 and Alan was able to gain the odd place as a result, lying 5^th at the end of the lap ahead of Andy.H. Chris was down the pan having dropped from second place to lie 8^th behind Tim. There wer no place changes further down the fleet.

Lap 3 Rupert retained the lead from Jonty with Paul behind him. Tim went back ahead of Alan and Andy.H as did Chris. Geoff went in front of Tiger and Andy.B passed Roan with the last four places unchanged from lap 1 and 2.

Lap 4Rupert led from Jonty who in turn led Paul but the gaps were quite narrow, 40 seconds between 1^st and 2^nd and 20 second between 2^nd and 3^rd. Tim and Chris got past Noel whilst Alan remained in 7^th place but Andy.H dropped down two positions to lie astern of Geoff and Tiger. Roan again went ahead of Andy.Band Thomas overtook Jazz, Ed and Toby.

Lap 5, the final lap, saw Jonty closing in on Rupert who finished the race 22 seconds ahead and with Paul34 seconds astern. Andy.H crossed the line in 4^th place with Chris next,then Noel , Alan and then Tim having dropped back from4th to 8^th during this lap. Next came Geoff, Tiger,Terry and lastly in 12^th place Andy.B
