Streaker Ramblings - Numbum races 11 & 12 - 11/02/2018

Mainly Blue skies with patchy grey cloud and a fresh cold breeze as we left for Piddinghoe this morning. On arrival at the Pond the breeze was from the west and blowing at about force 4 however by the time boats got on the water this had built to a good mid force 5 with gusts into force 6. 11 boats took to the water for the first race on a course, as below, set by Chas Humphries (RO) assisted by Stephen Hamilton with Zoe McCall and Amanda Borrodale in the Safety Boat.

At the gun Jonty Freeman (Laser Radial – NSSC) was first across the line from close to the outer limit with Andy Beck (Laser  Radial – NSSC) second away and Chris Foster (Laser full rig – Lancing) third across the line just below Andy but with his bow ahead.

It got a bit congested as the boats reached the bank and tacked onto port. Matt Springall (Laser full rig – NSSC) fell out with Roan Briggs (Topper – NSSC) alongside and Roger McCall (Laser full rig – Pevensey) very close on his starboard side.  Alan Simmons (Streaker – Lancing) had gone closer to the shore and having tacked onto port was ahead and above this gaggle.

The leg along the west bank, to the Fisherman’s Bay mark was fast and furious with several boats caught out by the severe gusts and the Gybe mark at its end caused a number of near capsizes,

The second reach from the mark in the middle of the pond towards the mark at the east bank also caused a few problems with Matt taking a dip just off the north shore of the Island. On the way back up the south side of the Pond Alan decided that it was too much like punishment and headed for the shore. He had brought his small Streaker Wave sail but is not so sure that it would have been any more enjoyable had he set it up on the boat. Ed Rollestone and Thomas Beck signed on to sail in a Cadet dinghy and went afloat, never to reach the start line. A certain amount of helm/ crew coordination was missing – Ed not having sailed with a crew before – and they soon came ashore with Ed rigging his Oppie for the second race. Roger also went ashore to sort out the youngsters.

At the end of the first lap Jonty was in the lead, a position he held throughout the race, with Rupert Smith (Streaker – NSSC) lying second, Duncan McDonald (Streaker – NSSC) third, Chris fourth and Andy fifth. Matt was sixth to complete the first lap with Roan seventh, Bill Wates (Laser full rig) eighth, and Lucy McCaig and Maddie Quinn (Feva – NSSC) ninth, Mike Rosier (Laser Radial – NSSC) tenth and Geoff Sheridan (Byte – NSSC) eleventh.

Lap 2. Jonty led from Duncan as Rupert took a short dip on one of the gybes but retained third place. There were no place changes in the next five boats with Mike now moving ahead of Lucy to lie ninth with Geoff still ‘tail end Charlie’.

Lap 3 was still led by Jonty with Rupert moving up to second place as Duncan took a dip off the north ‘coast’ of the Island dropping back to fourth. Chris moved up to third place as a result and behind him Matt recovered to fifth by passing Andy. Roan remained in seventh place, still ahead of Bill, who had had a swim or two and with Mike, Lucy and Geoff astern.

Lap 4 had Jonty leading Rupert but making no further gain of distance and the order below remained as in lap 3.

Lap 5 Jonty leading Rupert with Chris third and as Matt retired before the finish Andy went up to fifth behind Duncan. Roan, Bill, Mike , Lucy and Geoff had been finished at the end of lap 4.

Lap 6 was sailed with only Jonty and Rupert still on the water and with a marginal decrease in the lead. With Handicaps applied the result was a win for Jonty, with Rupert second and Duncan third.

The Second race of the day was sailed over the same course with nine boats going afloat.

At the gun Matt was first across the line just ahead and to weather of Jonty with Roan third away just below the two above. Matt was first to round the windward mark , close by the clubhouse, with Rupert next just ahead of Jonty but with Duncan just astern.
Along the west shore the gusts kept coming even stronger than in the first race and it was one of these that sent Duncan screaming off down the leg whilst Rupert suffered a wipe-out.  It was not long before

Bill suffered a similar event and went for a swim only to be followed by Geoff going over the side of his Byte. By the end of the lap Matt was leading Duncan with Jonty third, Roan fourth, Rupert fifth, Mike sixth, Bill seventh, Ed (in his Oppie this race) eighth and Geoff heading for the shore before he completed the lap.

Lap 2 Matt continued to lead with Duncan not far astern and Jonty very close on his heels – 3 seconds away – Rupert was up to fourth having overtaken Roan as had Mike. Bill and Ed were the tail enders.

Lap 3 It would appear as though this was going to be the theme for the race as first Matt and then Mike joined the swimmers just north of the Island.. This left the way open for Jonty to overtake Duncan and claim the race lead position. Matt had lost two places to hold on to third with Rupert still fourth but Roan back up to fifth ahead of Mike, Bill and Ed (finishing at the end of this lap).

Lap 4 Jonty still held the lead from Duncan - six seconds ahead – with Matt third and Rupert fourth. Mike was down to seventh behind Bill, another ‘upset’ the likely cause.

Lap 5, the penultimate lap and Jonty still led the fleet with Duncan second and Rupert third, having passed a once more inverted Matt. Matt did manage to stay ahead of Roan who continued to hold fifth place and Mike was again ahead of seventh placed Bill who suffered at least one more capsize near the Island.

Lap 6 and four boats continued to race. Jonty crossed the line in the lead some half a minute ahead of Duncan with Rupert another minute behind. Matt never finished the lap

With handicaps applied Jonty was the winner once again with Duncan second and Rupert third.

Yet another good strong blow, too much for some, and plenty of swimming practice.  With the wind whistling through the rigging of the shore parked boats, the writer considers force 6 was the norm rather than exception during this day’s racing. Even Rupert admitted to wearing round instead of gybing on several occasions during the two races. The two young girls in the Feva could not get their boat re rigged in time for the second race and young Ed had to be called back to start the second race when he set off from the bank on the course side of the line. Hopefully next weekend will see a little less strenuous conditions.
