Streaker Ramblings - Streaker Open Meeting - Redoubt SC- 30.09.2017

We set off from Hove at about 8.15 am heading up the A23/M23 and then onto the M26/M20 on the 2 hour trip to Redoubt SC for the Rooster Sailing sponsored Streaker Open event, the last in the South eastern series. Skies were grey and overcast and no signs of a breeze when we arrived on site. The programme was for a 10.30 start but lack of wind meant that the first race did not get underway until just after 11.00. The RO Brian Mumford, with Hilary Pittock as Committee boat helm and ARO, set a complex course

In the last few minutes of the countdown the wind shifted by 90 degrees causing Alex Reindorp (Chipstead SC) and Alan Simmons (Lancing SC) to be over the line at the start with Alan getting a somewhat late call back meaning that he was last of the small fleet to start correctly.

As a result it was Simon Herrington (Downs SC) who was first away with Hannah Mumford (Redoubt), sailing in a borrowed boat, second up the beat with Peter Withrington (Burghfield SC) third to cross the line. Fourth to start was Phil Hadron (Downs SC) but Alex and Alan soon passed him.

The fleet closed up on the short close reach form the top mark (No9) to mark No8 and then all set off on the downwind leg towards mark No 2.

All bar Alan held towards the south side of the pond but he gybed onto port tack and he arrived at the mark in the lead and a couple of lengths ahead of Simon. By the time they had passed mark No7 Simon was in the lead and Hannah was close on Alan’s heels. At the top of the beat from No3 to No 9 Simon came to grief with the shallows just off the clubhouse and Alan took the lead once more with Alex behind and Simon behind him. On the next leg back to mark No 2

Alan extended his lead once more and continued to pull away to lead in the last two laps with Alex following him across the line in second place with Simon holding on to third place. Peter took fourth, Hannah fifth and Phil sixth place.

After a break for lunch race two was cleanly away in slightly fresher breezes with quite a few very sharp gusts. The RO had repositioned the windward mark (No9) slightly further south but otherwise it was the same sequence of marks.

First out of the trap was Alex with Simon behind him and Peter third away. Hannah however came off the line at the pin end on port tack, to lead the fleet to the windward mark. By the end of the lap Alex was out in front with Hannah lying second and Simon third. Alan held fourth place with all four retaining their relative positions throughout the race. Phil and Peter were constantly vying for fifth and sixth place in the first two laps until Peter had a coming together with Hannah and retired with a holed boat, he did not start in the third race.

Alex did not have it all his way when he too found the shallows of the clubhouse but recovered and retained his lead.

The third race was held back to back over the same course with Hannah first across the line, Simon behind her but with Alex further upwind.

Alan and Phil were stuck in a continuous battle for the tail end places with Alan faster off-wind and Phil taking the upwind legs. On the third lap Alex found the shallows yet again and Simon took the lead which he held to the finish but Hannah was unable to catch either of them. Alan and Phil having exchanged places in the first two laps end the third and fourth laps fifth and fourth respectively.

With the overall points worked out Alex was the worthy winner, with Simon next and Alan third overall. Hannah was fourth, Phil fifth and Peter sixth.

PS. This blog is late as we were off on holiday the day after the event and then both had bad head colds on our return home.
