Streaker Ramblings - Numbum Races 5 & 6 - 21.01.2018

On Sunday 21^st Jan Bett and I were on our way home from our holiday in Switzerland hence there are no photographs and my report is based solely upon the lap times for each boat. Laurence advises me that no RO nor Safety boat crew turned up before racing was due to start and thus he set up the course below. Michael Veale and Mike Rosier volunteered for safety boat – presumably the wind was quite light , conditions which do not offer them too much excitement. By the time this was organised Laurence did not feel like rushing to get ready for racing and so he went home, leaving the race control to Toby Rollestone and Emma Briggs. Conditions as reported by Laurence were ‘wet and miserable’.

First away at the start were Chris Foster (Laser full rig – Lancing), Rupert Smith (Streaker – NSSC) and Roger MCCall (Laser full rig - Pevensey) with these three occupying the top order at the end of the first lap. Paul Ryan (Laser full rig – Hardway) was just astern of Roger with Bill Wates (Laser full rig - NSSC) just ahead of 6^th placed Chris Turner (Laser Radial – NSSC). Next came Jazz Turner (Laser 4.7 – NSSC) with Geoff Sheridan (Byte – NSSC) behind her and Zoe McCaig (Laser Radial- NSSC)  behind him in 9^th place. In 10^th Place Penelope Duncan (Laser Radial – NSSC) led Dave Murley (Laser Radial – NSSC)  then Richard Beal (Laser Radial – NSSC) , Tim Mellor (Laser full rig – NSSC) with Lucy McCaig and Millie Swallow (Feva – NSSC) 14^th and last across the line. It was a close fought lap with just 8 seconds separating first and third boats not to say that it was not close further down the fleet.

Lap 2 and Rupert stole the lead from Chris.F – just 4 seconds ahead at the line - with Paul going ahead of Roger and Bill crossing the line at the same time as Roger. Dave clawed back from 11^th to 8^th position and Zoe dropped back from 9^th to 11^th and Richard went up to 10^th with the two tail enders, Tim and Lucy still 13^th and 14^th.

Lap 3 saw Chris regain the lead from Rupert whilst Paul was still in third place. Roger, Bill and Chris.T remained in the positions they held in the previous lap except that Roger went clear ahead of Bill and Chris.T closed up on him too. Zoe made a great leap up to 7^th place as Jazz dropped to 11^th. and Richard also fell back to lie 13^th.as Tim climbed up the fleet to lie 9^th.

Lap 4 had Chris.F holding on to the lead but with Paul overtaking Rupert to lie 2^nd. Below them Roger, Bill and Chris.T remained in the same relative position as in the previous two laps but Tim.M gained another couple of places to lie 7^th ahead of Zoe. Penelope dropped down the place order to 11^th place as Dave and Geoff went ahead of her. Jazz however took a dive – not literally – to end up in 14^th and last place.

Lap 5 the final lap and it was Chris.F first to cross the line 6 seconds ahead of Paul with Roger having stolen another place over 4^th placed Rupert with Bill in 5^th place. Tim gained another place to go ahead of Chris.T and Penelope gained three places to finish in 8^th place ahead of Zoe. Dave came next at 10^th followed by Jazz who had gained back three places too as Geoff lost out to finish 12^th ahead of Richard and Lucy. With handicaps applied, the winner of the race was Rupert with Chris.F second, Paul third and Roger fourth.

The second race was held over the same course and it looks as though the first boats away were Chris.F, Roger and Paul with Chris.T hard on their heels. At the line at the end of the first lap that was the order, with Chris.F 8 seconds ahead of Roger and Paul just a second later with Chris.T another 8 seconds back. Tim was now lying 5^th just 4 seconds astern of Chris.T, Zoe was next to cross the line with Rupert behind her – he must have had a bad start or hit a mark? Richard was 8^th, Dave 9^th, Geoff 10^th, and Bill 11^th – another poor start? Penelope was 12^th ahead of last placed Lucy. Jazz did not sail in this race.

Lap 2 had Chris.F still in the lead – 28 seconds from Paul who had passed Roger. Behind them Chris.T still led Tim but Rupert had begun to rise through the fleet and now lay 6^th ahead of Zoe..Behind Zoe, Bill had overtaken Dave and Geoff, as Richard dropped back to lie 10^th in front of Geoff. Penelope and Lucy were still 12^th and 13^th respectively.

Lap 3 Chris.F was still in the front position, about the same time/distance ahead of Paul with Roger still in 3^rd place but with Chris.T poised to take him in the next lap. There were no places down the fleet to 9^th placed Dave but Geoff went ahead of Richard to lie 10^th.

Lap 4 - Chris.T was off and running passing Roger to take third place at the line. Rupert was also taking off the brakes as he took three places to lie fourth but neither could catch Chris.F – still nearly a minute in the lead. Zoe went up a place to lie 6^th astern of Tim with Bill, Dave and Geoff 7th, 8th & 9th as before. Lucy gained two places to lie 11thahead of Penelope who in turn had passed Richard. Roger did not finish this lap and retired – gear failure?

Lap 5 Saw Paul slightly closing the gap on leader Chris.F with Chris.T still holding off the challenge from Rupert now just 23 seconds astern. The next change was Lucy gaining another place to lie 9^th as Geoff fell back from 9^th to 12^th place as Penelope and Richard went ahead of him.

Lap 6 as Paul closed in a little more on Chris, now just 9 seconds astern. Chris.T held onto third place with Rupert now just 5 seconds behind him. Tim was 5th to cross the line ahead of Zoe with Bill next then Dave Lucy, Richard and Geoff. Penelope did not finish the lap for what ever reason.

Lap 6 was sailed only by Chris and Paul with a very close finish – Chris being timed just one second ahead of Paul at the finish line.

With handicaps applied the winner of the race was Chris.F with Chris.T second, Paul third and Rupert fourth.
