Blue-ish
skies and a light ruffle of breeze upon leaving Hove for Piddinghoe. As the
morning progressed the skies ‘warmed up’ to a deep blue and the breeze was in
the order of force 2 to 3.
Race
Officer for the day, Rupert Smith, assisted by Toby Rollestone and with Penelope Duncan on the safety boat, set a course, as
below, to suit the breeze coming from the north east - with a start line from the
shore in front of the clubhouse and an inner and outer line mark and the
windward mark in the middle of the pond to the west of the Island.
At
the gun Chris Turner (Laser Radial – NSSC) was holding Alan Simmons (Streaker –
Lancing) to leeward at the shore end of
line and was first to cross the line then tacking whilst Laurence Venus
(Streaker – NSSC) and Duncan McDonald (Streaker – NSSC) stayed at the outer end
of the line and found more breeze with Duncan finishing the lap in top spot
followed by Laurence with Ed Thorburn (Finn – NSSC) in third place. Fourth
place was claimed by Jazz Turner sailing Rupert’s Streaker – her first ever
sail in this class. Chris Foster (Laser full rig – Lancing) was fifth, Paul
Ryan (Laser full rig – Hardway) sixth,
Matt Sprigall(Laser full rig – NSSC) seventh, Julian Dobson (Laser full
rig – NSSC) eighth, Jonty Freeman (Laser Radial - NSSC) ninth, Bill Wates (Laser full rig – NSSC) tenth,
Michael Veale and Mike Rosier (RS200 - NSSC) eleventh, Chris.T twelfth, Phil
Clare (Laser Radial - NSSC) thirteenth, Roger McCall (Laser full rig – Pevensey
Bay) fourteenth, Alan 15tth – having been envolved in a coming together with
Jonty at the mark off the Fisherman’s Bay trying to take advantage of several
boats all claiming water. Alan eneded up doing two turns and lost a good few
places. Terry Jones (Comet – NSSC) crossed the line in sixteenth place with
Dave Murley (Laser Radial – NSSC) seventeenth, Geoff Sheridan (Byte, original
rig – NSSC) eighteenth, Richard Beal (Laser Radial – NSSC) nineteenth, Paul
Langford (Laser full rig – NSSC) twentieth, Ed Rollestone (Oppie – NSSC) twenty
first and Thomas Beck (Oppie – NSSC) twenty second.
In
the second lap Laurence took the lead from Duncan and Ed.T moved up to lie
second with Jazz remaining in fourth place. Paul overtook Chris. F to go 5th
and Jonty fell back to 14th as Chris.T advanced to 9th. Roger made
gains to lie behind him. Bill lost ground to cross the line in 15th
with Alan behind him and Richard behind Alan but ahead of Geoff and Paul.L
Terry lost several place to cross 20th.
Lap 3 had Laurence pulling further ahead of Ed.t and Duncan was overtaken by Chris.F who also passed Paul.R who had also passed Duncan. Jazz dropped back down the order toile 8th astern of Julian and Jonty regained a few places to lie 9th. Alan gained places to lie 10th ahead of Roger as Dave dropped back to lie 12th. Bill rose up the order to lie 13th ahead of Chris.T as Phil was dropped back to 15th. Michael crashed down to lie 16th and Richard also fell back to 20th. Ed.R finished the lap in 21st place, Thomas having finished at the end of the previous lap when he was already five and a half minutes behind Ed.
Lap 4, the final lap, and Laurence crossed the line over a minute ahead of Ed.T with Chris.F next another minute back. Duncan crossed in 4th place having reeled in Paul.R and Jonty went ahead of Matt, Julian and Jazz and Alan also overtook Jazz to cross 10th who in turn went ahead of Roger. Chris.T crossed the finish line 13th still ahead of Michael with Bill having lost two places and Phil having also dropped down the order to cvross16th. Then came Geoff, Terry, and lastly Paul.L19th. For the second race of the day Rupert decided to change the start to suit the shifted breeze. This time the line was from the south bank, at the eastern end of the jetty, to the mark in the south west corner of the pond – in front of the clubhouse. Jonty did not sail in this race, having some more pressing engagement to attend to.
It was Duncan, towards the shore end, who led off the
line with Laurence just to leeward whilst Paul.R and Chris.F were next away at
the pin end of the line. By the end of the lap Laurence had already pulled out
a 36 second lead over Duncan with Paul.R third and Jazz just behind him in 4th.
Matt was 5th well ahead of Roger in 6th place ahead of Chris.F with
Alan astern of him in 8th place. Ed.T came through next in 9th place with Chris.T behind him , then Julian, Geoff
and Terry 13th. Phil was next across the line at 14th
with Michael next , then Richard, Dave, Bill and Paul.L The Oppies of Ed.R and Thomas brought up the
final placings at 20th and 21stwith
Ed already 3 minutes ahead of Thomas.
Lap
2 Saw Laurence extend his lead ahead of Duncan as Paul>r retained third
place leading Jazz and Ed.T came up the fleet to lie 5th ahead of Matt, Chris.F and Roger as Alan fell
back to lie 9th ahead of Chris.T. Michael pulled up to go ahead of Julian.
Phil went ahead of Terry and Bill gained places to lie 15th as Terry got left behind dropping to 17th
and Richard also fell back to 19th.
Lap 3 saw no change in the leading three placements but Ed.T went ahead of Jazz as did Chris.. Alan clawed his way through to lie 8thahead of Roger with Chris.T lying 10th. Behind this group Michael and Julian stayed 11th and 12thas Bill went ahead of Phil and Geoff. There were no place changes in the remainder of the fleet.
Lap 4 and there were no positional changes among the four leading boats with Laurence making little or no gain this time. Jazz passed Chris.F to lie 6th and Roger passing Alan as Matt was passed by Alan. Julian went ahead of Michael and Dave climbed up to 13th ahead of Bill and Geoff as Phil fell back to 16th.Terry then Paul.L brought up the rear with Richard and the two Oppies having been finished at the end of lap 3.
Lap
5, the final lap and it was Laurence first across the line with Duncan second
and Paul.R third.
Ed.T
was fourth and Jazz fifth, there were no place changes further down the fleet
with Julian last to finish in 11th place.
With
handicap applied the results were Laurence first, Duncan second and Paul.R
third.

It
was a combination of the course and strength of the wind but it all led to a
goodly amount of place changing in both races.

PS.
If this report is a bit thin on ‘happenings’ it is due to the lateness of
publishing – not helped by our break in Switzerland and a new Computer
requiring quite a bit of setting up and not yet finished – which does not help
with the memory of the odd incident.
There
are still two more Sundays to cover and will be dealt with directly.
