Streaker Ramblings – Freeman Iceberg Races 7 & 8 – 24.11.2019
Grey overcast skies, with tiny blue patches and no breeze
worth mentioning as we set off for Piddinghoe on Sunday last – 24th November. The Blue sky
never arrived but there was a tiny breeze from the south west, enough for the
RO Phill Clare, assisted by Anna Freeman and with Penelope Duncan and Richard
Beal on the safety boat, to set an X shaped course, as shown below, with a
‘Committee boat start’ over towards the east shore:-
At the Gun it was Laurence Venus in his Hadron H2 who was
first away at the pin end of the line. Thomas Harland-Smith (Laser Radial) was
second to cross in mid line with Ed Thorburn (Finn) third off and Alan Simmons
(Streaker) next at the Committee boat end.
With a true beat to the blue mark
off the clubhouse Laurence was first to turn the corner with Alan a length or
so behind. Next up was Ed followed by Thomas and then Zoe McCaig (Laser Radial)
with Bill Wates (Laser full rig) and then Rupert Smith (Streaker) just astern.
By the start of the next beat, after a reach towards the Fisherman’s Bay and another back towards the east shore mark, Laurence was well in the lead with Ed just behind and Alan somewhat further back. At the end of the lap Ed had taken the lead with Alan third, Rupert fourth and Thomas fifth.
Lap 2 saw the same order in the first four boats but
Rupert had closed to within 15 seconds
of Alan and Sean Beevors (Laser full rig) had gone ahead of Thomas to lie in
fifth place with Julian Dobson (Laser full rig) passing Zoe to lie seventh and
Mike rosier (Laser Radial) dropping back to lie fourteenth behind Dave Hitchens
(Laser full rig), Terry Jones (Comet), Tim Cox (Topper), and Dave Murley (Laser
Radial).
On the Run in lap 4 Rupert went ahead of Alan to cross the
finish line third, behind Ed and Laurence. Thomas lost out on this lap too
dropping well down the fleet to finish twelfth.

Race 8 was held over
the same course, with again a Committee boat start. The breeze was, if
anything, lighter than in Race 7 with big holes. See the shot and reflections
there in of the boats below – before the second start.
Laurence was, yet
again, first away. Ed attempted a port tack, port end start but it did not come
off. Rupert also got a good start with Alan somewhere back in the pack but
still rounding the clubhouse mark in fifth place behind Thomas, with Ed some
way back in sixth place.
By the end of the first lap
Laurence crossed the line seven seconds ahead of Rupert with Ed now up to third
and Alan to fourth with Julian fifth.
By the end of the
second lap the first three places were unchanged but both Sean and Julian had
gone ahead of Alan and Thomas moved up to lie eighth behind Bill but ahead of
Zoe with Terry, Dave.H, Dave.M, Mike and lastly Tim.
Lap 4 saw Ed pass
Rupert to lie second and with Thomas go
back ahead of Zoe to lie eighth with no other place changes lower down the
fleet.
Lap 5 sailed by the
leading nine boats saw Laurence cross the line still ahead of Ed with no
further place changes.

light breeze pair of races, lots of windless patches and some drastic direction
changes making a very challenging days sailing – I won’t call it racing!
