Streaker Ramblings – Elford Numbum Races 3 & 4 - 12.01.2020

Overcast, grey sky, and a stiff breeze from the west upon leaving home for Piddinghoe. The forecast was for 24 to 26 knots but on arrival at the Pond it seemed a good bit lighter. There was not a great deal of interest but after signing on some seven boats went afloat. The sky came good with lots of blue and a few whispy clouds.

Julian Dobson as RO, assisted by Bill Wates and with David Hitchens and John Scaife in the safety boat, set an ‘M’ shaped course starting from the south bank down by the second slipway.

Alan Simmons (Streaker) went afloat from the south west corner only to be hit by very strong gusts as soon as he got out of the Clubhouse shadow. Even reaching along the west bank was a struggle and after finally making it down to the start area called out to Bett to say that he was not going to race and headed back towards the clubhouse, struggling all the way.

At the gun it was Lucy McCaig (Laser Radial) first across the line from the pin end with  Rupert Smith (Streaker) next away and ducking her transom on his port tack from the shore end. Third across the line were Michael Veale and Mike Rosier (RS 200) with Thomas Harland-Smith (Laser Radial) also from the shore end.
Having found clear Air Rupert only had to contend with the vicious gusts on the way up to the windward mark off the clubhouse. Thomas however was close on his stern after rounding and setting off on the reach across the west shore. The two Mikes were soon round and hoisting their Gennaker with Lucy in hot pursuit.
Behind them it was Zoe McCaig (Laser Radial) who was the first casualty of the race with a capsize just after the mark and allowing Lewis Johns (Laser Radial) to pass her.

Rupert was first to round the second Gybe mark, after the one off the Fisherman’s Bay with Thomas right behind him and then Michael and Lucy - who had her first swim at the mark in the middle of the pond – second gybe.
On the next, reaching leg, to the mark off the east bank, Thomas went ahead of Rupert and hold the lead until the beginning of the long beat from the mark south east of the Island.
Lucy, having recovered from her dip, was still ahead of Lewis until the beginning of the beat but he passed her and began to pull away. At the end of the first lap Rupert was first across the line with Thomas 15 seconds behind, Michael was third another 15 seconds astern with Lewis fourth, Lucy fifth and Zoe bringing up the rear.

Lap 4 Rupert held the lead from Michael as Thomas had a swim on the windward leg back to the clubhouse crossing 26 second behind with Thomas recovered to cross fifty seven seconds astern. Lucy held off Lewis to cross fourth with Zoe still tale ender.

Lap 5 had Rupert out in front with Michael second and Thomas still third. Lewis passed Lucy to cross the line, and finish, 8 seconds in front.
With handicaps applied the winner was Rupert  with Thomas second and Michael third as below.

Race 4 was to be sailed over the same course, with the wind if anything a bit stronger and just as many big gusts to come.

Six boats had remained on the water and came to the line with Lewis well over and having to return. Rupert was first away from the shore end with Thomas a little behind but higher on the wind.

Michael was third to cross with Zoe having to duck his stern with her port tack start and Lucy a bit further astern. Rupert was first to round the windward mark and Thomas would have been second but decided to fall over in a gust.
It was therefore Lucy second to round just ahead of Zoe with Michael behind. Rupert rounded the Fisherman’s Bay mark in the lead from Lucy, then Michael with Zoe next followed by Lewis and finally by a recovered Thomas.

The next leg was uneventful but on the leg along the east shore, behind the Island, Lucy went for a dip and up the windward leg Thomas, who had recovered, went ahead of Lewis and was closing in on Zoe.

At the end of the lap Rupert was out in front, crossing the line 47 seconds ahead of Michael with Thomas now up to third place ahead of Zoe with Lewis fifth and Lucy sixth.

Lap 2 and Rupert extended his lead with Michael very nearly taking a dip at the end of the windward leg up the south shore, he recovered but was by then 50 seconds astern. Thomas went ahead of Zoe to cross 13 seconds ahead and Lewis stayed ahead of Lucy.
Lap 3 was led by Rupert but Thomas had climbed up to lie second, albeit  22 seconds astern him, with Michael a further. Seconds  behind. Zoe, Lewis and Lucy’s relative positions remained unchanged – in spite of Lewis testing the waters again on the final beat.

Lap 4 with Rupert still out in front and taking a dip, after passing the Island but recovering promptly, saw Thomas also take a spill on the final windward leg up the south shore - after recovery he still finished the lap ahead of Michael.

Lucy capsized, firstly on the leg along the west shore and took several tries to get her boat upright again. She went in again along the east shore and although she rounded the south east mark she eventually went ashore after the rest of the fleet had finished the fifth lap.

Lap 5. Rupert crossed the line at the front of the fleet a minute and 13 seconds in front of second finisher Thomas with Michael 28seconds behind.

Zoe finished in fourth place only to capsize just after she crossed the line and Lewis was last to finish. With the results handicapped and corrected Rupert was the winner with Thomas second, Zoe third and Michael fourth and Lewis fifth.

These were very difficult conditions with all but Michael falling in at least once. Lewis and Lucy were the top water babies with more spills than can be recalled and Thomas was not far behind in that respect.

Yours truly was thankful that he stayed firmly ashore even though it seemed that the wind had eased for the second race – it had not!

PS. Thanks to Michelle Smith for allowing me to use some of her Photos, along with the selections from Bett’s 277 pics – using my ‘Compact’ camera as she had left her 42x Zoom camera at home!

PPS. Some readers may have noticed that I got the results of the first race wrong  last week - due to a note on the results sheet which I thought meant taking five minutes off all the results (starting time and clock sync). Those were amended, as was the lap time spreadsheet, and the blog updated.
