FREEMAN ICEBERG Race 1 - 01.11.2020

As a preamble, to this the first blog of the Dinghy racing at Piddinghoe in November 2020, the writer has to say that he first started writing ‘Streaker Ramblings’ (and later ‘Piddinghoe Ponders’) as blogs covering Streaker Dinghy Open Meetings/Racing  back in 2008 – as far as his records show – it could have been earlier but several computers later any other records are now lost.

Sunday 1^st November saw the first race in the 2020 Freeman Iceberg series scheduled. The Wind forecast for Piddinghoe was force 6 to 7 so the writer was not going to sail, even if there was going to be a race, and so did not attend at the pond.

There was a race however, with Rupert Smith as RO assisted by Connie Sturt and with Michael Veale and Lewis Johns on the safety boat. At this point in time the course to be sailed is unknown but four boats ventured out onto the water, Thomas Harland Smith in a Laser Radial, Mike Roseier likewise in a Radial , Andy Beck in a Laser 4.7 and Tim Cox in his Topper – all NSSC members. Michael Veale took some pictures on the water which grace these pages (the writer’s grateful thanks).

No record is available of the starting order but by the end of the first lap (of six) the order was Thomas leading with Tim second37 seconds behind, Andy third 6 seconds further back and Mike another 30 seconds behind in last place.

The number of Capsizes, and those who did so, is also unknown but gaps in the timings of the first and subsequent laps would seem to indicate that there were a fare few – the photos show that it was a fare bit breezy.

Thomas still led at the end of the second lap with Andy now in second places some 40 seconds behind with Tim third and Mike still tail end Charlie. Lap three saw no further place changes but with Thomas pulling out further ahead of Andy and Andy increasing the gap between himself and Tim. Mike was even further back – swim?

Lap 4 saw no place changes again but Mike was finished at the end of the lap leaving three still sailing.

Tim was finished at the end of the fifth lap leaving just Thomas and Andy still afloat with the latter 80 seconds adrift.

Thomas crossed the finish line after six laps 32 second ahead of Andy – suggesting a dip for Thomas during that lap.

A second race was not held, it is suggested that all those in the first race were well and truly tired out. None the less they were all to be congratulated for giving it a go in extremely hard conditions – or were they all just foolish?

 With the introduction of the new ‘Covid 19 lockdown’ until 2^nd December and the club (NSSC) ruling that ‘all organised racing will stop’ (as of 4^th November) the next possible racing will not be until Sunday 6^th December – if the restrictions have by then been lifted! As a consequence there will be no further ‘Blogs’ either.
