Streaker Ramblings - Elford NumBum Races 5 & 6 - 19.01.2020

Sunday morning dawned with bright blue clear skies and a light breeze but really frosty, had to scrape the ice off the Mini before we could set off. On arrival at the pond I was immediately off to uncover the new boat and sort out its Kicker attachment strop which was regrettably not present when I picked up the boat on Saturday and only became obvious while putting all together at Piddinghoe in the afternoon. Once rigged it was time for a spin and all seemed fine at first.

Just before the gun I realised the the outhaul control line had pulled out of the sail Clew and was therefore unusable. I headed back to the jetty in front of the clubhouse and retied it, by which time the sequence had well and truly started – finished before I could get to the line - so I was last of the eleven boat fleet to start.

Lucy McCaig (Laser Radial) was persuaded to act as RO, assisted by Sam Briggs with Bill Wates in the safety boat. Rupert  Smith (Streaker) and Bill Wates (Laser ) set up a committee boat start over basically the same course as last weekend, the breeze being from the north west, along the western shore as shown below:-

At the gun Rupert was first across the line to windward of Thomas Harland-Smith (Laser Radial) with Laurence Venus (Hadron H2 ) third to go.

Yours truly was last to go but heading to the right and having to dip the stern of David Hitchens (Laser full rig) and, nearly, Jake Briggs (Oppy).

The fleet all eventually tacked onto port to head for the mark off the Fisherman’s Bay with Rupert making it first ahead of Laurence. Third to round and go onto the run was Roger McCall (Laser full rig) with David.H followed by Zoe Mcaig, Thomas and then Alan Simmons  - in his newly acquired Devoti  D Zero in his first outing on Piddinghoe.

After the leg behind the Island and on the close reach along the south shore Laurence went ahead of Rupert and Alan began to close on the five boats ahead of him.

At the end of the first lap the order was Laurence, Rupert, Roger , Zoe, Thomas and Alan – see the table below for boat positons in each lap:-

Lap 2 saw no changes of place in the top four boats but Thomas went ahead of Zoe by 7 seconds  and Alan remained  sixth astern of Zoe. David.H passed Dave.M to lie eighth and Michael Veale and Mike Rosier (RS 200) remained tenth ahead of Jake.

Lap 3 had Laurence continued to gain on Rupert with the gap now 46 seconds, with Roger behind him and Zoe behind Roger as Alan went ahead of Thomas to lie fifth with Geoff Sheridan (Byte CII) still holding seventh place on the water.

Lap 4 Zoe went up to third place and Alan to fourth as they both went ahead of Roger and Thomas with no changes in the rest of the fleet.

Lap 5 the final lap saw Laurence cross the line ahead of Rupert a minute and fourteen seconds ahead only to discover that he, Rupert, had not signed on. This moved Zoe up to second with Alan still behind her by 3 seconds at the line and every one else finished a place higher.
With handicaps applied and times corrected Zoe was the winner of the race with Thomas second Laurence third, Geoff fourth and Roger fifth.

It is obvious that it will take a while for Alan to get used to his new machine but at the break between the races he offered it to Laurence to trial who declined, saying the boom was too low for his liking – well it is a bit  - but he has obviously never tried to sail a Europe! Rupert did have a go agreeing that the boom is low but offering no other comment.

Race 6 was sailed with ten boats on the water, the RS 200 not going afloat, Michael complaining of hurting ribs – not sure if this was sustained during race 5.

At the gun it was Thomas away first with Dave.M next but below him on starboard tack. Rupert, and Laurence behind him decided on a port hand tack start by the committee boat with just enough speed to get ahead of the starboard tack boats.

Alan meanwhile had nipped across the line at the pin end and tacked off onto port down the right hand side of the beat.

By the time they rounded the mark off the Fisherman’s Bay Laurence was in the lead with Alan two boat lengths behind down the off wind leg.

Rupert was on the inside of Zoe with Thomas a couple of lengths astern down this leg.

Coming up the close reach to the finish mark, off the club house, Laurence stayed ahead of Alan, crossing the line with a 16 second advantage with Rupert 17 seconds behind Alan. Then came Zoe ahead of Thomas  with Roger behind them. Roger was lying sixth, Dave.M seventh, David.H eighth, Geoff ninth and Jake tenth.

Laps 2 and 3 saw no places changes throughout the fleet.
Lap 4 again no changes among the front six boats bur Geoff pulled ahead of Dave.M as Laurence sped away from Alan, crossing the line a minute and eighteen seconds ahead of Alan.
Laps 5 & 6 saw no place changing with Laurence crossing the finish line two minutes ahead of Alan and Rupert third to cross a minute and four seconds behind him with Zoe fourth and Thomas fifth.
After calculations had been performed Rupert was ‘crowned’ top dog with Laurence second, Zoe third, Thomas fourth and Geoff fifth.

A lovely day for a sail, especially for Alan’s first race in the D Zero, with a chance to get used to an unfamiliar vessel.  No nasty gusts to contend with and just the slightest change in wind strength between the two races – a tiny tad more in the first.
