Streaker Ramblings - Elfoed Numbum Races 7 & 8 - 26.01.2020

Cold, Grey overcast Sky and a light breeze on leaving Hove for Piddinghoe. The Sun did break through briefly during the morning only to cloud up and rain as we were leaving for home. The forecast  - XC Weather for Piddinghoe – had been for 22 knots but on arrival there was not much more than a good force 3 blowing from the South West.
Zoe McCaig as RO, assisted by Emma Briggs and with Bill Wates in the safety boat – a poorly back prevents him from sailing in his Laser at present – decided to go with last week's course albeit with a committee boat start from the mark off the Fisherman’s Bay. and the other way round.

The breeze had begun to get up just before the start but Alan Simmons (D Zero) decided to give it a go anyway and was last to launch. For the first race of the day thirteen boats came to the line, including Ewan Hamilton and Jake Briggs in their Oppies.

At the gun it was Duncan McDonald (Streaker) – back after a bit of a break – who was first off the line at the pin end hotly pursued by Matt Springall (Laser full rig).

Michael Veale and Mike Rosier (RS 200) and Laurence Venus (Hadron H2)  were away close behind.

Alan having managed to get into irons, a couple of times, during the start sequence eventually crossed the line close to the committee boat.

There are no pics of this or the racing  as Bett’s camera batteries – that in the camera and the standby one – both failed and there was no other camera in the car, consequently I have used a few past shots to brighten up these races.

By the end of the first lap Duncan had established a lead from Matt with Michael third and Laurence fourth  - see individual lap positions and times below:-

Lap 2 saw Michael and Laurence move up a place each as it appears that Matt took a dip and dropped back to fourth place.

Alan was still sixth astern of Thomas Harland-Smith (Laser Radial)  with Sean Beevors (Laser full rig) then ahead of Roger McCall (Laser full rig). Lewis Johns (Laser Radial) went up to tenth place passing David Hitchins (Laser full rig) with Ewan and Jake bringing up the tail.

Lap 3 was still led by Duncan from Michael but Laurence retired with his boat holed, in a collision with one of the Oppies  it is understood. He took no further part in the races. It allowed Matt back up to lie third with Thomas close on his stern.

Lap 4 with all the fleet chasing Duncan, Matt went ahead of Michael to lie second and the rest of the competitors all moved up  with Lewis going ahead of Dave.M. Jake was finished but Ewan went on to sail another lap.

Lap 5 and the only change occurred as Dave.M regained his place ahead of Lewis.

Lap 6 was contested by only the four leaders but there were no place changes with Duncan leading the way home from Matt with Michael next and lastly Thomas very close on his heels. With Handicaps applied the race winner was Duncan with Thomas second, Matt third and Dave. M and Sean tied for fourth place.

There were a few capsizes, but as said above, no photographic evidence thereof. It got a bit fresh with the odd gust well into force 5 but mainly top end force 4 – certainly Alan’s limit, especially in the unfamiliar boat. It does seem to be fairly well behaved with only one near dip occasion in the two races.
