Streaker Ramblings - NumBum Races 3 & 4 - 13.01.2019

Grey Sky with the cloud in layers, not cold but no sunshine and the breeze just stirring the Bamboo in the next door garden as I left Hove for Piddinghoe. The XCWeather forecast was for 20 Knots from the west but on arrival it was blowing barely a whisper. There  was a bright skyline over the south sky but it never opened up.

Laurence Venus (Streaker, NSSC) was RO for the racing assisted by Emma Briggs with Penelope Duncan (Radial, NSSC) and Stefanie Dornbusch (Boat unknown, NSSC) in the safety boat. Laurence set an 'M’ shaped course with the start by the second, easterly, slipway along the south bank. The first leg was to windward to a mark in the south west corner of the pond, just off the clubhouse, as shown below.

Some seventeen boats took to the water and at the gun Dave Murley (Radial, NSSC) and Terry Jones (Comet, NSSC) were amongst the first across the line from the shore end. Further out Rupert Smith (Streaker, NSSC), Chris Foster (Laser, Lancing) and Alan Simmons (Streaker, Lancing) were also quickly away at the ODM end of the line.

Rupert was first to the weather mark and off towards the mark off the Fisherman’s Bay with Chris and Alan following and with Ed Thorburn (Finn, NSSC) not far astern.

Rupert began to pull out a good lead on the way to the mark off the South shore and by the end of the lap was 29 seconds ahead of second placed Alan with Ed.T third a further nine second behind. Chris was fourth ahead of Roger McCall (Laser, Pevensey).

Michael Veale and Mike Rosier (RS 200, NSSC) were in sixth place with Thomas Harland-Smith (Radial, NSSC) seventh, Zoe McCaig (Radial, NSSC) eight, Lucy McCaig (Radial, NSSC) ninth, Dave Murley tenth, Geoff Sheridan (Radial, NSSC) eleventh and Terry Jones twelfth. Jo West (Radial, NSSC) was in thirteenth place ahead of Richard Beal (Radial, NSSC), fifteenth placed Jazz Turner (Hansa, NSSC), with Brendon Rudd and Lewis Johns (Laser II, NSSC) sixteenth and Bea West (Oppy, NSSC) seventeenth.

Lap 2 saw Ed.T go into the lead  from Chris, by 2 seconds with Alan now third,1 second behind and with Rupert 36 seconds further astern, having ‘fallen out’ of his Streaker on the long beat from the mark in the south east corner. Michael went ahead of Roger to lie in fifth place and Thomas dropped back to 19th behind Zoe seventh, Dave eigth and Lucy still ninth. Terry gained a place on Geoff and Jo retired allowing Richard up to thirteenth with Brendon astern and ahead of Jazz and Bea.

Lap 3.had Ed.T and Chris at the front with Rupert  managing to catch and pass Alan at the south west corner mark to lie third. Dave pulled up two places to lie sixth behind Michael having passed Roger and Zoe on the way. Terry climbed up to lie ninth ahead of Thomas and Lucy with Geoff retaining twelfth and no further place changes behind.

Lap 4 and only four boats remained sailing as the breeze dropped right off leaving Ed.t to cross the line a minute and 14 seconds ahead of Chris. Rupert was third across 2 minutes 36 second further back with Alan bringing up the tail some four minutes adrift.

With Handicaps applied the result was a win for Chris with Rupert second, Ed.T third, Jazz fourth and Terry fifth.

The second race was held over the same course but by the start it was blowing a good force three with gusts into the force four range.

Amongst the first away were Chris, Jo and Lucy and Zoe  but Chris turned off at the wrong mark – the one between the ODM and that in the south west corner off the clubhouse. He picked up the correct  route in subsequent laps but as a result of his error was timed a lap behind.

A fairly large group of boats ended up together at the mark off the Fisherman’s bay and with quite a few ahead Alan tried to get up above Terry and – in a gust – capsized allowing everybody to pass whilst he tried to recover. At the end of the first lap the order was Ed.T ahead of Zoe, Jo third in line and Michael fourth. Thomas was in fifth place with Lucy sixth, Dave seventh, Rupert, who had had a very poor start, was lying eigth, Richard ninth, Roger tenth, Brendon eleventh, Geoff twelfth and Terry thirteenth. Alan was, after recovery before the safety boat saw him struggling to get back aboard, fourteenth with only Jazz and Bea astern.

Lap 2 and Ed.T still holds the lead but now from Michael who has gone ahead of Zoe and Jo and as Rupert puts on a spurt to lie 5th passing Thomas, Lucy and Dave  who remains in seventh place. Richard retains 9th place as Roger retires having suffered a capsize after his mainsheet snagged his transom. Brendon moves up a place to lie 10th as Alan climbs up to 11th ahead of Terry – now ahead of Geoff – and Chris is timed in at 14th with Bea ahead of Jazz.

Lap 3 Ed.T and Michael lead the fleet as Rupert goes 3rd ahead of Jo who in turn leapfrogs Zoe. Thomas stays 6th with Dave behind him and Lucy drops back behind him. Alan gains another two places to lie 9thwith Richard astern and Chris timed behind him. Brandon  drops back to lie in 12th place with Terry having been passed. Geoff, in 14th place lies ahead of Bea with Jazz behind her.

Lap 4 and Rupert is now up to second place astern of Ed.T and ahead of Zoe with Michael back to 4th place and Jo 5th.Thomas still retains 7th place with Lucy behind him and Alan up to 8th ahead of Richard. Dave  is back down to 10thwith Chris at 11th . Brendon stays in 12th place with Geoff having overtaken Terry. Jazz past Bea to cross the line, and finish, 15th.

Lap 5 is contested by five boats , all the rest having finished at the end of lap 4. Ed.T takes line honours ahead of Rupert by a minute an 26 seconds with Zoe third, Michael 4th and Jo 5th.

After applying the handicaps the winner is Bea with Zoe second, Rupert 3rd, Jo 4th and Ed.T 5th.

The first race was held in somewhat trying conditions with the wind varying greatly in strength, especially on the final lap when it almost completely died out. The second race the forecast began to be fulfilled with sufficient breeze to get boats on the plane on some of the legs for a few moments. It never did however reach the forecast strengths.
