Streaker Ramblings - NumBum Races 5 & 6 20.01.2019

Cold but with blue skies and a light breeze on leaving home for Piddinghoe. On arrival at the pond there was a force 1 to 2 blowing from the North east corner of the pond – Fisherman’s Bay area.

The course for the day, set By RO Ed Thorburn, assisted by Mr. Halland –Smith with Toby Rollestone and Jo W in the safety boat, was a figure of eight shape as shown below:-

For the first race of the morning 18 boats went afloat which made for a rather congested start line at the favoured pin end. Chris Foster (Laser full rig, Lancing) was first to cross the line at the gun with Rupert Smith (Streaker, NSSC) next to go and Dave Murley (Radial, NSSC) third away. Laurence Venus (Streaker,NSSC) was just a little behind Dave but to windward. A group of four boats were much closer to the west bank, Zoe McCaig (Radial, NSSC), Tiger Cox (Radial,NSSC), Thomas Halland-Smith (Radial, NSSC)  and Matt Springall (Laser full rig, NSSC). At the back of the fleet Ewan Hamilton was the last to get across the line and onto the course.

Matt sailed in towards the west bank just beyond the Children’s Wharf and in his Roll tack, to avoid the reeds, was a bit too enthusiastic and tipped his Laser onto its side but managed, just, to stay out of the water.

Rupert was the first boat to round the mark off the Fisherman’s bay and led Chris around the resat of the lap with Laurence then back in third place. Alan Simmons (Streaker, Lancing) was in fourth place at the end of the lap with Roger McCall (Laser full rig, Pevensey) fifth, Michael Veale and Mike Rosier (RS 200, NSSC) sixth. Julian Dobson was lying seventh, Matt at eigth, Zoe, ninth and Geoff Sheridan (Radial, NSSC) tenth. Dave held eleventh place with Thomas twelfth, Tiger thirteenth, Penelope Duncan (Radial, NSSC) fourteenth, Terry Jones (Comet, NSSC) fifteenth, Richard Beal (Radial, NSSC) sixteenth, Ed Rollestone (Laser 4.7, NSSC) seventeenth and Ewan eighteenth.

Lap 2 had Laurence passing Rupert to lead the fleet and Chris sloting in to second place while Alan stayed in fourth with Roger and Michael behind him. Matt and Zoe  each gained a place to lie seventh and eigth ahead of Julian who dropped back and Dave went ahead of Geoff to lie tenth.  There were no place changes behind Geoff although the relative gaps changed a little.

Lap 3 saw Laurence continuing to pull away ahead of Chris and Chris extending his second place away from Rupert. Roger just passed Alan before the line to cross 2 seconds ahead.

There were no further place changes behind Alan but Ewan managed to capsize his Oppy and was ‘rescued’ by the safety boat and towed ashore. His mother Emma, who had been taking the photos used in this report, went to help him put his boat away and he did not sail in the second race.

Lap 4 Laurence extended his lead still further, now 47 seconds in front of Chris who was 55 seconds ahead of third placed Rupert. Roger retained fourth place slightly further ahead of Alan. Michael , Matt, Zoe, Julian  and Dave maintained their relative positions – sixth to tenth as Thomas and Tiger went ahead of Geoff with Penelope and Terry staying fourteenth and Fifteenth. Ed.R passed Richard to cross the line sixteenth. Lap 5 was contested by nine boats, those behind having already been finished

Lap five had Laurence cross the line ahead of Chris but the latter had closed the gap to 20 seconds and Rupert also closed up on Chris to cross 10 seconds astern. Alan also closed in on Roger but was unable to catch him finishing just four seconds behind. Michael, Matt, Zoe and Julian finished in that order .

With Handicaps applied Laurence was the winner, with Chris second, Rupert third, Alan fourth and Roger fifth.

The second Race – No 6 in the series – was sailed over the same course in a touch more breeze – force 3 - and again there was a goodly clump of boats at the ODM. Alan came up a little too late and was forced the wrong side of the mark only to have Roger and Chris below him harden up into his port side. As a result of 720 degree turns Alan was the last to start in the now seventeen strong fleet. Matt however got a clean start and off to the Fisherman’s Bay in the lead. Julian was again up towards the front and at the end of the lap held fourth place behind Laurence but ahead of Rupert. There were some crushes at the marks and Alan made good headway to claw back to ninth place behind Thomas, Zoe and Roger. Dave crossed in tenth ahead of Tiger, Michael, Richard, Penelope, Geoff, Ed.R and Terry.

Lap 2 Saw Matt and Chris extend their lead from Laurence as Rupert moved ahead of Julian to lie fourth. Julian was also overtaken by Thomas who took sixth position at the line. Zoe dropped to eighth as Alan remained ninth with Tiger and Michael astern.  Terry moved up from last place to lie twelfth ahead of Geoff who had passed Penelope and Richard dropped back to cross in sixteenth behind fifteenth place Ed.R with Dave bringing up last place.

Lap 3 Chris took the lead from Matt and opened up a comfortable 15 second gap. Both pulled a bit further ahead of third placed Laurence who stayed about the same distance ahead of Rupert as in the previous lap. Thomas dropped back to eighth ahead of Alan as Zoe overtook him and Julian to lie sixth. Tiger maintained tenth place as Dave made a comeback to lie eleventh ahead of Michael and Penelope went ahead of Geoff as Richard went in front of Ed.R with Terry dropping back to seventeenth.

Lap 4 Chris and Matt were still well ahead of Laurence and stretching away from him but Rupert dropped a bit further astern of him. Roger and Zoe held on to fifth and sixth places and Thomas and Alan each moved ahead of Julian, now 9th.  There were no place changes between tenth placed Tiger and Penelope in thirteenth placed Penelope but Ed.R overtook Richard once more. All but the front four boats were finished at the end of this lap.

Lap 5 saw Chris cross the line 27 seconds ahead of Matt who was a minute and 32 seconds ahead of Laurence with Rupert another 18 seconds astern having closed in a good bit in this last lap.

With the results calculated the winner was Chris with Matt second, Laurence third, Rupert fourth and Zoe fifth.

A nice little breeze, perhaps it could have been a touch stronger for the first race but it came up a trifle in the second race. Apart from the excitement of Matt’s near swim, Ewan’s real swim and the writer’s clash at the start of the second race there were a few close duels on the water some of which led to good gains for some. The outlook for next Sunday is currently quite reasonable at about the same strength as this day’s   forecast - which did not fully arrive – but a bit more variable in direction.
