Streaker Ramblings - Freeman Iceberg Races 9 &10 - 04/12/2016

The forecast was wrong again, both Windfinder and Winguru (for NSSC at Seaford) were saying 16 to 17 knots at the due race times. As we left Hove there was a light breeze and bright clear blue skies – cold with it though (5 degrees C on the car thermos). On arrival at the pond the car park was nearly empty – no fisherman this week – with a top end force 3 breeze straight along the south bank from the south east Corner.

Penny Springall was coerced into acting as RO with Colin Cryer as ARO and David and Joe Murley manning the safety boat. 15 boats signed on for the Seniors race and 7 Cadets entered for their race. With the breeze from the south east,  the course was set with the first leg from the main jetty near the slipway, to a mark to the south of the Island as shown below:-

At the gun Andy Hamilton (Laser full rig) was first away near to the south shore, near the outer distance it was Rupert Smith (Streaker) with Alan Simmons (Streaker) a little behind and a touch lower down the line. Behind this group Ed Thorburn (Finn) set off towards the middle of the pond from near the pin end mark with Chris Turner (Laser Radial) crossing ahead of Michael Veale and Mike Rosier (RS200) as Penelope Duncan(Laser Radial) set off from close to the shore on starboard tack. Ed was first around the windward mark with Rupert next and then Alan. Close behind Alan Chris rounded the mark only to swiftly stop dead as his daggerboard made contact with the ‘offshore’ extension to the Island. Andy a length or so astern of Chris saw the problem and headed up a bit to clear the mud as did Michael, a length behind him.
By the end of the lap the order was established with Ed in the lead, just 3 seconds ahead of Rupert with Alan sixteen seconds further aft. Michael passed Chris to lie 4th.who had recovered from his stop to stay ahead of 6th placed Andy. Terry Jones (Laser full rig) was in 7th place ahead of Bill Wates (Laser full rig). Matt Springall (Laser full rig) was lying 10th behind Penelope – he was late for the start having (so he says) had problems getting his boots on. Tiger Cox (Topper) was just 20 seconds behind him. Behind Tiger was Jonty Freeman (Mirror-S/Handed) in front of Chas Humphries (Laser Radial) with Connie Sturt (Slipper) bring up the rear in 14th place.

Lap 2 had Ed still in the lead but unable to make much impression (now 14 seconds ahead) on Rupert . Alan held on to 3rd place a further 27 seconds astern of Rupert and with Michael yet another ten seconds behind. Andy made good use of another ‘mistake’ by Chris  - not quite sure but think he fell out of his boat this time. Matt had made a good bit of ground climbing up to 6th place as Terry fell back to 10th. Bill and Penelope stayed at 8th and 9th and tiger remained 11th. Chas passed Jonty to lie 12th. and Connie finished her race at the end of the lap.

Lap 3 and Ed gained a few more seconds on Rupert but Michael found enough breeze to fly his gennaker on three legs of the course and to pass Alan. Behind Alan,  Andy continued to lead Matt, Chris and Bill.W whilst Terry overtook Penelope with no  places changing behind her.

Lap 4  finished with Ed still out in front , a minute ahead of Rupert and with Michael 27 seconds in front of Alan. Matt pulled up past Andy to lie 5th but without place changes among the following group except that Tiger having been finished at the end of the previous lap Jonty moved up to 12th place on the water.

Lap 5 Ed held the lead from Rupert by 53 seconds and Michael now 51 seconds ahead of 4th placed Alan. Again there were no place changes behind the front group. Penelope, Chas and Jonty were finished at the end of this lap.
Lap 6, the final lap saw no changes at the front of the fleet with Ed finishing first, Rupert 2nd, Michael third and Alan 4th. Matt crossed the line 5th as Chris went ahead of Andy. Bill.W crossed 8th and Terry crossed 9th. It transpired that, apart from his grounding and capsize?, Chris had missed the outer finish line mark in an earlier lap and to add insult to injury had not signed on resulting in him being disqualified.

With the handicaps applied Rupert was declared the winner with Alan 2nd, Tiger 3rd Ed 4th and Matt 5th.

Race 10, sailed over the same course, with the breeze slowly building through force 4 set off at 11.30 for the seniors.
Terry just managed to squeeze inside the outer limit mark, with Jonty loudly calling for him to head up. Nearer to the shore Rupert was next away on the outer end of a group of four boats with Ed just above him, Alan above Ed and Matt just a little further back but between the latter pair. By the end of the lap the order was Ed at the front followed by Rupert then Matt just 4 seconds behind. 4th place was held by Michael ahead of Alan. Terry and Chris were next up identically timed across the line. Bill.W held 8th place with Tiger just 22 seconds behind him. Next came Penelope 10th, Chas 11th, Jonty 12th and Connie 13th. Andy did not sail in this race.

Lap 2 with Ed in front Matt went ahead of Rupert by 6 seconds. Michael held on to 5th with Alan behind. Chris passed Terry and closed to 3 seconds astern of Alan. Bill stayed ahead of Penelope who had overtaken Tiger while the rear three stayed in the same relative places as in the previous lap. Connie was finshed at the end of this lap.

Lap 3 saw Matt close behind Ed (just 6 seconds) with Rupert nine seconds further back and Michael lying 4th ahead of Alan who was still holding off Chris- just 4 seconds astern. These two were a real battle. Terry failed to finish this lap having capsized just off the west slipway. He struggled to get his Laser back up (the mainsheet was cleated in) and was eventually helped upright by the safety boat. He then retired, tired wet and cold. This pushed the remainder of the fleet up a place, Bill to 7th, Penelope to 8th, Tiger back up to 9th, Chas to 10th and Jonty to 11th.

Lap 4 and Ed could not break away from Matt (just 4seconds astern) and Rupert a further 6 seconds behind. Michael had also closed in on Rupert (26 seconds astern) with Alan still holding off Chris (9 seconds behind). Has passed Tiger to lie 9th behind Bill and Penelope with Jonty in 11th place.

Lap 5 saw Ed stretch the gap ahead of Matt to 21 seconds with Rupert another 6 seconds behind Matt. With Michael ahead of him Alan finally lost the battle with Chris who pulled out a 26 second lead.. There were no place changes behind the leading six boats but Tiger was finished at the end of this lap.

Lap 6, the penultimate lap and Matt closed up on Ed once more, now just three seconds behind and Rupert sixteen seconds behind him. Michael was in 4th place still and now 46 seconds behind Rupert but with Chris rapidly closing the gap to 20 seconds and 49 seconds ahead of 6th placed Alan. Chas got himself ahead of Penelope by nineteen seconds but still remained behind 7th placed Bill.W. with Jonty bringing up the tail end. The last four boats were finished at the end of this lap.

Lap 7 was contended by just six boats with Ed just holding on by 3 seconds from Matt, a very close call, and Rupert had dropped back a little to cross the line 29 seconds later. Michael was 4th to finish with Chris behind him and lastly Alan. As in the first race Chris ended up disqualified – not having signed on. With Handicaps applied Rupert was once again the winner  with  Matt second, Tiger third, Alan 4th and Ed 5th.

Cadets Race 9 was held over the same course but starting five minutes after the Seniors race. – just before Ed was due to finish his first lap.

Charlie Rigg (Topper)  was first away - clear of Connie who was in the middle of the line heading towards the middle of the pond and in the wrong start. Next away , on Starboard tack was Harry Quin (Oppie) with Maddi Quinn (Topper) trying to cross ahead of him. Nearer the outer limit was Roan Briggs.
By the end of the first lap Jazz Sayed (sailboard) was in the lead with Charlie second, Maddi third, Toby Holmes-Ling (Oppie) fourth, Harvey Jenkins (Oppie) fifth, Harry sixth, George Quinn (Oppie) seventh and Roan Briggs (Topper) eighth. Roan did not sailing the following lap or at least he did not finish it.

Lap 2 and Jazz still led the fleet with the order of the rest of the fleet unchanged and with Toby, Harvey ,Harry and George then finishing.

Lap 3 saw the order Jazz, Charlie and Maddi unchanged.

Lap 4 had only Jazz still sailing.

With Handicaps applied the result was another win for Charlie, Toby 2nd, Harry 3rd and Harvey 4th.

Cadets Race 10.
This time Ed had finished his first lap and sailed through the line as the cadets started.

However it was Harvey who was first away in mid line with Charlie clear behind and a little to weather. Parallel but to weather of Charlie was Roan.

Jazz, as in the previous race had started with the seniors and thus I state her position in each lap based on her lap times. By the end of the first lap the fleet positions were as follows. Leading was Jazz with Charlie 2nd, Roan 3rd, Harvey 4th and Harry 5th. Maddi Toby and George had stayed on the bank side and did not participate in this race.

Laps 2 and 3 saw no place changes from the first lap and Jazz did a fourth lap. However Roan did manage to capsize twice during the race, and quickly recovered needing no outside assistance.

With Handicap applied Charlie was the winner with Harvey Second and Roan 3rd.

The breeze increased slowly during each race which gave the right conditions somewhere in the race for the fit and the not so fit, the experienced and not so experienced but not too much for anyone.
The leader board (overall results for the series) for the Seniors is still led by Tiger cox with Rupert second, Alan third and Ed fourth. The leading Cadet is Harvey with Charlie second, Roan third and Harry fourth.

It was said that the Cadet fleet may start with the seniors in future races (pure hearsay I must add, nothing official) but if that happens I will have to adjust all my results to agree with Laurence’s – the official ones on the NSSC web site – for future races.
