Streaker Ramblings - Freeman Iceberg Races 7 & 8 - 27/11/2016

Not too bad a forecast as we left home for the Pond and the breeze at 160 Poplar was noticeable but light. The sky was overcast and grey with little sign of a break. On arrival at the pond there was a difficulty as no one present had the latest combination for the compound keys. Fortunately within a minute or so Ed Thorburn arrived and he did have the numbers. By the time of the start some sixteen seniors had signed on and nine Cadets had also.

Laurence Venus took on the mantle of RO again as no one had signed on to do the task and with a wind from the north he set a course with the first leg a beat towards a mark just off the Fisherman’s Bay. There were quite a few fishermen in the area and along the east bank. The breeze was by now a good force 3.

Seniors Race 7

First to cross the line at the shore end was Tiger Cox (Topper) on port tack with dad Tim Cox (Laser Radial) on starboard very close by. At the pin end Geoff Sheridan (Byte-original rig) was also quickly away and in mid line Jonty Freeman (with dad John crewing the Mirror) set off on port tack but clearing the rest of the fleet. Ed Thorburn (Finn) was not far behind this group but quickly passed them all to round the windward mark in the lead. Alan Simmons (Streaker) had been closer to the pin end when the gun went and tacked off towards the middle of the pond in clear air, was able then to choose when to head back for the mark and rounded in second place. Third to round the mark at the end of the first windward leg were Michael Veale and Mike Rosier in the RS200.

By the end of the first lap the order had been established with Ed in the lead, Alan 2nd, Michael 3rd, Tim 4th, Bill Wates (Laser full rig) 5th, Zoe McCaig (Laser Radial) 6th, Julian Dobson (Laser full rig) and Dave Murley (Laser Radial) equal 7th , Bill Giles (Solution) 9th, Tiger 10th, Terry Jones (Laser full rig) 11th, Penelope Duncan (Laser Radial)12th, Richard Beal (Laser Raidal) 13th, Geoff 14th, Jonty 15th and Simon Suter (Laser full rig) 16th.

In lap two Ed extended his lead ahead of Alan, Michael closed the gap a little. There were no positional changes in the first six boats but Julian got away from Dave with Terry passing Tiger as did Penelope briefly. Jonty crossed the line, now behind Simon in 16th place.

Lap 3 and still no place changes in the top eight boats with Alan still holding off challenges from Michael. Terry managed to get past Bill.G to lie 9th and Tiger got past Penelope  as Geoff overtook Richard.

Lap 4 with the leading three boats still in the same order but Zoe just sneaked ahead of Bill.W to lie 5th and Dave went ahead of Julian to lie 7th. There were no place changes further down the fleet.

Lap 5 and as the breeze increased slightly Michael was at last able to get ahead of Alan. Tim was still fourth with Zoe and Bill crossing the line alongside one another for fifth place. Julian once again went ahead of Dave and Bill.G pulled back ahead of Terry. There were no further place changes.

Lap 6 the final lap and Ed crossed the line in the lead about three and a half minutes ahead of Michael who was a minute ahead of Alan. Tim came home 4th close behind Alan and Zoe was just three seconds ahead of Bill.W. Julian was 7th, Dave 8th, Bill.G 9th and Terry 10th.

With the handicaps applied the winner was Tiger with Ed 2nd and Alan 3rd.

Seniors Race 8

Regretably the Battery in Bett’s camera failed in the countdown to the start of the second race of the day and by the time she had put the spare in place the boats were already off on the first leg of the course. Ed had had a slightly better start than in race 7 and was soon around the windward mark in the lead. Alan had started nearer the shore end of the line and also made good progress to the windward mark rounding again in second place with Michael a little astern. By the end of the lap the order settled down to Ed 1st, Alan 2nd, Michael 3rd, Tim 4th, Bill.G 5th, Terry 6th  Zoe 7th, Dave 8th, Bill.W 9th, Tiger 10th, Richard 11th, Simon 12th, Geoff 13th Penelope 14th and Jonty 15th – Julian did not sail in this race.

Lap 2 had Ed out in front with Michael passing Alan and pulling away, next came Tim and then Bill.G, next up was Zoe having passed Terry. Bill W. caught up with Dave as they crossed the line simultaneously in 7th place. Terry had dropped back and crossed at the same moment as Tiger. Richard retained 11th place as It was all change behind him as Penelope climbed up to 12th ahead of Geoff who had Simon drop behind him with Jonty bringing up the rear.

Lap 3 saw Bill.G pass Tim briefly as the leading three places remained unchanged. Zoe continued to lead Bill.W and Terry gained places to lie 7th ahead of Dave and Tiger. Behind him the order remained as in the previous lap with the exception that Simon retired.

Lap 4 and it was still Ed, Michael and Alan as the leading group with Tim gaining 4th place back from Bill.G and with Zoe still behind him in 6th place. Bill.W dropped back behind Terry and Dave with the field behind staying in the same order.

Lap 5 and no change in the leading six boat’s positions but with Terry retiring Dave went up to 7th and then no further changes down the fleet.

Lap 6 was contested by just eight boats with Ed crossing the finish line a minute and a half ahead of Michael who was nearly four minutes ahead of Alan and Tim just a further six seconds astern. Bill.G, was 5th, Zoe 6th, Dave 7th and Bill.W 8th and last.

With the handicaps applied the winner was yet again Tiger , Ed 2nd and Alan 3rd.

Cadets Race 7

Maddi Quinn (Topper) was first across the line at the shore end with Charlie Rigg (Topper) heading towards her on Starboard and with Lucy McCaig (Topper) at the outer end of the line and shortly tacking onto starboard. Roan Briggs (Topper) was well back, in fact behind both of the Oppies – George and Harry Quinn. By the end of the first lap the order was Charlie 1st, Lucy 2nd, Roan 3rd and Maddi 4th. Harry led his brother George to lie 5th with Alexander Danks (Peco s/h) bringing up the tail end.

The positions in the subsequent laps remained unchanged throughout the race to the finish line after four laps for the Toppers. After the handicaps were applied Charlie was the winner with Lucy second and Roan third. Harry and George both beat sister Maddi.

Cadets Race 8

At the gun it was Roan, at the shore end of the line, who was first away. Maddi in the middle of the line was next and Charlie third to cross. Lucy was well back from the line as was George and Harry was nowhere in sight. By the end of the first lap the order was Roan 1st, Lucy 2nd, Maddi 3rd, Charlie 4th, Jazz Sayed (Windsurfer) 5th, Harry 6th, and George 7th. Alexander did not finish the lap as neither did Bruno Baker (Gull).

Lap 2 saw Roan still in the lead from Lucy as Charlie went ahead of Maddi and both Harry and George passed Jazz.

Lap 3 saw no change in order of the main pack but Jazz dropped to 7th and last and finished, along with the two Opies.

Lap 4 and the finishing order was as in the previous lap Roan, Lucy, Charlie and Maddi.

With handicapping completed the result was a win for Roan with Lucy next then Charlie. Next was Harry ahead of Maddi with George 6th and Jazz 7th.

In the second race of the day (for both Cadets and Seniors) the wind gradually increased to a good top end force 4 and swung further to the east. This meant that the second windward leg started with a beat towards the Island but that is was no longer possible to pass to the north of the Island and that a tack was necessary to head northwards. The increased strength meant marginal planeing conditions along the south side of the pond.

Alan.S 1700.
