Elford MumBum 2025 Races 9 & 10

Elford NumBum 2025 – 02/02/2025

Blue skies with the odd patch of white cloud and the very faintest of Breeze as we let for Piddinghoe Sunday morning (2nd Feb).

On arrival the skies were still blue and there was a heavy frost, froze one fingers whilst unpacking the Streaker.

Dave Hitchens was RO, assisted by Mark Ramsay and with Andy Hamilton in the safety boat. David set a course, clockwise around the pond, as shown below, with the start from the small jetty to the north of the clubhouse and a short beat to the mark in the south west corner – which was the finish mark. The breeze had filled in a bit , from the south,  once all the boats were afloat but it was still quite light and fickle in strength and direction.

At the gun it was Pete Henderson (Laser Radial) at the shore end of the line who was first away with Red Sheridan (Oppy) next. Alan Simmons (Streaker) was third across the line toward the pin end and then Michael Veale and Mike Rosier (RS 200) fourth away even closer to the pin.

Michael was first to the mark in the corner closely followed by Alan and then Matt Springall (Laser full rig) setting off on the, then, reach to the mark in the south east corner and south of the Island. Matt and Ed Thorburn (Finn) went ahead of Alan on the run along the east shore with Zoe McCaig (Laser Radial) fifth, Pete 6
th and Andy Beck (Lightning) 7th. The next group was led by Nick Hart (Laser full rig) then Julian Dobson (Laser full rig) and Geoff Sheridan (Byte CII) all of whom passed Andy.B on this leg.

After a short reach across the pond to the mark off the Fisherman’s Bay there was a longish beat back to the finish line and Ed and Matt had pulled out head of Michael and Alan.

Zoe was 5th across the line with Nick 6th, Geoff 7th,  Julian 8th, Pete 9th, Jo Bruggenwirth (Laser Radial) 10th, Dave Parkyns (Laser Radial)11th,Andy.B 12th, Carolyn Turner (Laser Radial) 13th. Red 14th, Jane Thompson and Bea Brammah (Hansa) 15th and Calvin Laidlaw and Simon Moles (Hansa) 16th.

Lap 2 saw the leading three boats, Ed, Matt and Michael, in unchanged position as Nick got past Alan who still led Zoe, with Geoff, Julian, Pete and Jo next in that order. Andy.B went ahead of Dave to lie 11th with no place changes behind.

Lap 3 Ed was now well out ahead of Matt (by 54 seconds at the line) with Nick next having overtaken Michael.  Alan and Zoe were in 5th and 6th place at the line with just 1 second between them. Julian went ahead, briefly, of Geoff with Pete, Jo and Andy.B next. Carolyn went in front of Dave to cross in 12th place with the last three in unchanged order.

Lap 4 and Matt closed up the gap behind Ed to 16 seconds with Nick closing in on Matt – 27 seconds adrift. Michael was 15 seconds later. Alan was 5th still just 1 second ahead of Zoe. Geoff went back ahead of Julian to cross the line 10 seconds in front, behind them there were no further place changes with the two Hansas being finished.

Lap 5 saw Ed pulling back his lead crossing the line to 41 seconds ahead of Matt and with Nick 21 seconds later. Michael, Alan and Zoe – with still only 1 second between them, were still 4
th, 5th and 6th respectively. Geoff lost 7th place back to Julian by 9 seconds and the order behind remained unchanged and Red and Dave being finished.

Lap 6 Ed crossed the line first having increased his lead to 1 minute 17 seconds ahead of Matt. Nick was next 22 seconds later with Michael 4th 33 seconds later. Alan crossed in 5th place 20 seconds later with Zoe 14 seconds later. Julian and Geoff were next to finish with Jo having passed  Pete and with Andy and then Carolyn behind them.

Lap 7 was sailed solely by Ed.

With handicaps applied and calculations completed the winner of the race was Red, with Zoe 2nd, Matt 3rd, Nick 4th and Alan 5th – see full results below:-

Race 10 was to be sailed over the same course with no marks being re-positioned but with the breeze a trifle lighter and more shifty.

At the gun Matt, in mid line, was first to cross with Geoff nearer to the pin end and the Ed nearer to the shore – should have been the favoured end  Alan had started near the pin end of the line and whilst the earlier starters found themselves in a totally flat wind patch, he was able to make the corner mark with ease and rounded ahead of the rest of the fleet and set off down the south shore.

Geoff was next to round with Matt behind him and Ed behind Matt.

Alan led the fleet along the run off the east bank with Geoff behind and Matt 3rd ahead of Nick and Ed.  Jo was behind Ed with Zoe, Pete and Red next.

Back at the mark in the south east corner there was a gaggle of seven boats, led by Julian with Dave, Andy, Michael and Carolyn just ahead of the Hansas.

On the beat along the west bank, from the Fisherman’s Bay, Matt and then Nick both went ahead of Alan who managed to stay ahead of Ed with Geoff now closing in. 6th to cross the line was Jo with Zoe behind her and Julian behind Zoe. Pete was in 10th place ahead of \Michael, Andy, Dave, Carolyn, Red, Calvin and Jane.

Lap 2 Matt held the lead by 2 seconds from Ed who had passed Nick with Alan now 4th and Geoff 5th. Zoe moved up to lie 6th with Julian and then Pete 8th behind her as Jo dropped back to lie 9th. Michael remained in 10th place as Carolyn went up to 11th and Andy dropped back to 12th still ahead of Dave and with the last three places unchanged.

Lap 3 Ed took the lead from Matt crossing the line 32 seconds in front. Nick still held 3rd place ahead of Geoff and Zoe who had both overtaken Alan. Julian was still 7th with Michael now up behind him, the latter having gone ahead of Pete and Jo. With Carolyn still 11th, and Andy and Dave behind her, Calvin moved up to lie 14th ahead of Red and Jane, these last three being finished here.

Lap 4 Ed continued to hold the lead from Matt, to 11 seconds, with Nick and Geoff behind him. Alan re-passed Zoe to cross the line 5th – 14 seconds in front. Julian and Michael held their positions as in lap 3 with Jo re-passing Pete. Carolyn, Andy and Dave also stayed as in lap 3.

Lap 5 Ed led the fleet, now 1 minute 50 seconds ahead of Matt with Nick still 3rd 1 minute 40 seconds later. Geoff was 4th across the finish line with Alan5th and Zoe 6th just 6 seconds later. Michael gained a place ahead of 8th placed Julian. Carolyn meanwhile had passed Jo and Pete with Andy bringing up the rear in 2th place. All but Ed were finished here.

Lap 6 sailed solely by Ed.

With handicaps applied and calculations completed the winner of the race was Matt with Ed second, Geoff third, Nick fourth and Zoe 5th. See results below.

Light and Shifty breezes throughout both races made or interesting racing with several close tussles taking place. The leg along the south bank was particularly trying as the breeze, especially in race 10, shifted from a close fetch to a tight beat and back again to a fetch.
Alan was quite pleased with both of his starts putting him in second place or in the lead to the first mark and down the south bank, unfortunately he soon lost out.
