Elford Numbum 2025 Races 5 & 6

Elford Numbum Races 5 & 6 – 19/01/2025

Cold, gray and overcast at Hove when leaving for the Pond on Sunday morning

19th Jan. here was no breeze worth mentioning.

On arrival there was not much more wind to be seen (on the water) or felt.

Jazz Turner was RO, assisted by Rachel Baker and with Geoff and Red

Sheridan in the Safety Boat. The course, as shown below,

was to be around the outside of all the marks – except for the start mark which

was not a mark of the course thereafter.

Photographs by Bett Simmons

There were 19 boats on the water, including 5 Hansas - both crewed and single handed with their start as usual a minute after the main fleet.

Unfortunately there were no photos of the start nor the first part of that lap so the start order is to be determined by the times recorded at the end of that lap.

Those quickest off the mark, in a somewhat slight and fickle breeze, were Ed Thorburn (Finn), Rupert Smith (OK), Mark Ramsay (Supernova), new entry Ed Rollestone (Aero 5), Julian Dobson (Laser full rig) and Alan Simmons (Streaker). Ed.T stormed off into the lead with Rupert behind and Mark just astern.  Ed.R had made a good start in his Aero 5 - the smallest rig for the boat – with Julian not far astern and Alan close up to him.

By the end of the lap the order was as above with Zoe McCaig (Laser Radial) in 7th place ahead of Sean Beevers (Laser Radial), then Bill Wates (Laser Radial), David Hitchens (Laser Radial) 10th, Pete Henderson (Laser Radial) 11th, Jo Bruggenworth (Laser Radial) 12th, Dave Parkins (Laser Radial) was 13th, Darrel Topp (Laser Radial) 14th and Adm Billany (Hansa s/h) 15th. The next four boats were the Hansas of Louise Carr (H.s/h)  16th, Simon Moles and Calvin (Hansa) 17th, Jane Thompson  and Bea Brammah (Hansa 18th, with Chris Hobday (H.s/h) 19th.

Lap 2 was led by Ed.T with Rupert behind him and Mark behind him. Alan had a spurt and went up to lie 4th ahead of Zoe who had also gained places. Ed.R dropped back to 6th place as Julian took a tumble to lie 7th. Sean and Bill remained in the same places as in lap 1. Jo gained two places to lie 10th, overtaking David.H and Pete, those behind remained in unchanged positions as in lap 1.

Lap 3 The top five boats remained in unchanged positions from that in lap 2 with Sean going ahead of Julian and Ed.R who had dropped back to 8th. Bill still 9th place led Pete as Jo dropped  to lie 12th with David.H ahead of her. Dave P and Darrel remained in 13th and 14th places. Louise, 15th, went ahead of Adam and were both finished here as were Jane and Chris, Simon having retired during this lap.

Lap 4 there were no place changes among the leading ten boats with Ed.T now two minutes 26 seconds ahead of Rupert who was 27 seconds ahead of Mark one minute and 11 seconds in front of Alan still ahead of Zoe. Jo overtook David.H with Dave.P 13th ahead of Darrel.

Lap 5 saw only the top six boats racing, the remainder of the fleet having been finished at the end of lap 4. At the finish of the race it was Ed.T who crossed the line in pole position with Rupert next 3 minutes 29 seconds later. Then it was Mark ahead of Alan, Zoe and Sean.

With handicaps applied and Calculation finished the winner of the race was Ed.T with Rupert second., Adam third, Alan fourth and Mark fifth – see results below:-

Race 6, starting at 11.55 hours, was sailed over the same course but with slightly less breeze which was veering east – making the leg along the south bank a beat with only the odd ease to a fetch.

At the Gun  it was Alan, in mid line, who caught the breeze right and was off to the windward mark off the clubhouse. Ed.T was second away but to leeward with Mark next below him and then Zoe between these two. Rupert was well back from the line albeit nearer the shore end.

Alan was first around the windward mark and well down the next leg before the rest of the fleet made that first mark. Once the fleet began to round the mark to the south of the island Ed.T was lying second with Rupert third, Ed.R fourth, Sean fifth, Darrel sixth and Mark 7th. By the end of the lap the order was Alan 1st, Rupert 2nd, 25 seconds behind, Ed.T 3rd, 11 seconds later, Mark 4th, Sean 5th, Ed.R 6th, Zoe 7th, Bill 8th, Darrel 9th, Pete 10th, Julian 11th, David.H 12th, Jo 13th, Dave.P 14th, Louise 15th, Adam 16th, Jane 17th, Chris 18th, and Simon 19th.

Lap 2 Had Alan still in the front of the fleet and ahead of Ed.T, by 26 seconds, having gone in front of Rupert who was then 7 seconds behind him. Mark was still 4th with Ed.R 5th, having gone in front of Sean. Zoe and then Bill were next, as in lap 1. Darrel dropped back behind Julian, Pete and David.H. Lousie, Adam, and Jane were in positions as in Lap 1 with Simon now lying 18th having passed Chris.

Lap 3 Alan still held the lead from Rupert who had passed Ed.T with Mark in 4th place. Ed.R retired during this lap allowing Sean to move up to 5th with Zoe behind him. Julian went ahead of Bill to lie 7th with Pete, David, Darrel, Jo, David, Louise, and Adam retaining the same order as in Lap 2. Chris went up one place to lie 16th ahead of Jane and Simon who retired.

Lap 4  Saw Alan retaining the lead until the last few yards when Ed.T took the lead from him having also passed Rupert and with Mark also overtaking Alan. Zoe went up to lie 5th ahead of Sean. Bill dropped back to lie 10th behind Pete and David.H. Jo went ahead of Darrell who remained in 12th place. Dave.P13th, Louise and Adam retained their relative positions as in lap 3, David.P, Jane and Chris having been finished at the end of lap 3.

Lap 5 and Ed.T extended his lead from 2nd placed Rupert to 2 minutes, with Mark 3rd, 7 seconds later and the Alan a minute and 7 seconds behind him. Sean went ahead of Zoe again to finish 5th with Julian 7th behind her and Bill 8th back ahead of Pete, David.H, Jo, and, last to finish Darrel.

Lap 6 was sailed solely by Ed.T all others having been finished.

With Handicps applied and calculations done the winner of the race was Louise Carrr with Adam second, Ed.T third, Rupert fourth and Sean 5th – see results below.

Alan could not believe his luck at the start when rounding the first mark and setting off down the next leg, then a fetch, so far ahead of the rest of the fleet and then holding that position for the next three laps. The light and variable direction breeze was certainly to his benefit – and liking – although his final result was a disappointment. The conditions were a bit trying but all competitors were able to sail, for the second Sunday running.

The forecast, on  XC Weather, for next Sunday 26th Jan currently looks rather marginal. There is another named Atlantic Storm in the offing, when it arrives timing wise, it could be a different kettle of fish so turn up at the Pond and check it out on the morning.
