Elford NumBum Races 13 & 14 – 16/2/2025
A
cool but light breeze with an overcast sky upon leaving Hove for Piddinghoe. On
arrival it was discovered that the breeze was a bit on the fresh side and the
writer was not convinced that he wanted to sail/race in those conditions.
However he persevered and changed ready for the event, races 13 & 14.
Mark
Ramsay was RO for the day, assisted by Rachel Baker and with Darrel Topp and
Jake Briggs in the safety boat.
With a fresh breeze from the north east he set a simple course around the outside of the Pond with the start by the first slipway (from the pond gates) and the finish from the clubhouse, as shown below:-

Eleven
boats made it onto the water for the first race, it would have been a dozen but
Geoff Sheridan (Byte CII) had some problems and did not launch until two thirds of the way
through race.
At the gun Ed Thorburn (Finn) was first away close to the shore with Rupert Smith (OK)
near the pin end, Pete Henderson (Laser Radial) near the south bank and Alan Simmons (Streaker) fourth just behind him with Ed now on starboard just clearing him. Bill Wates (Laser Radial) was next to go and then James Oliver (Laser full rig) last of the ‘fast fleet’ to start.
A minute later the Hansa fleet started with Jazz Turner (Hansa s/h) leading Adam Billany (Hansa s/h) but closer to the south bank. Third away were Niall and Anna (Hansa), next came Jane and Bea (Hansa) with Issac (Hansa) last to cross the line.
At the
front of the ‘fast’ boats Ed led from Rupert with Pete astern at the mark in
the south east corner. Bill Wates (Laser Radial) went ahead of Alan to round
fourth with James still in the back seat. By the end of the first lap the order
was Ed 1st, Rupert 2nd, Pete 3rd, Bill 4th,
Alan 5th and James 6th and soon to also pass Alan. Alan
had had to reach over his stern, soon after launching to get his rudder full
down. As a result his gloves filled with pond water and he had to remove them.
Thereafter he quickly found his fingers frozen and was unable to hold his
mainsheet properly.
The Hansa fleet was led by Jazz just 2 seconds ahead of Adam with Niall 3rd, Jane 4th and Issac 5th.
Lap 2
saw Ed Still ahead with Pete 34 second behind and 10 seconds ahead of Rupert.
James was in 4th place ahead of Bill with Alan 6th. Among
the Hansa Jazz was 33 seconds ahead of Adam. Issac was next, ahead of Niall and
lastly Jane.
Lap 3
Ed was in front with Rupert now back in second place ahead of Pete with James
3th, Bill 5th and Alan, still stuggling in 6th place. But
deciding to finish here and retire ashore to try to get his fingers back to
life – which cup of hot coffee to hold did little to help. Among the Hansas
Jazz still led and the rest of the order was as in lap 2.
Lap 4
had Rupert still astern of Ed by now 50 seconds and Pete a further 50 seconds
later. James was still ahead of 5th placed Bill. There was no change
of place among the Hansas as Niall was finished.
Lap 5
Ed led Rupert who was being hunted down by James who had overtaken Pete and
Bill was last man standing. Among the Hansa there were no place changes but
Jazz pulled away from Adam to cross the line 25 seconds ahead and Jane was
finished.
Lap 6
saw no place changes among the ‘fast’ boats with Ed now 56 seconds ahead of
Rupert. In the Hansa fleet Jazz continued to lead as Issac was finished here.
Lap 7
Ed extended his lead over Rupert to one minute and 31 seconds with James ahead
of Pete and Bill in the rear. Jazz and Adam were finished at the end of this
lap, the end of the race for the Hansas.
Lap 8
with Ed still in the lead were no place changes with Pete and Bill finished at
the end of the lap.
Lap 9
Just three boats were still sailing and it was Ed first to cross the line a
minute and 50 seconds in front of Rupert.
With
handicap applied and Calcs made the winner of the race was Jazz with Adam 2nd,
Issac 3rd, Pete 4th and Rupert 5th. See

Race 14 started at 11.50 over the same course by then the Sun had come out to play. At the gun Ed near the south shore led over the line with Rupert at the pin end second to go and Geoff right on Ed's tail. Pete and Bill were just a fraction later with James last to go as the Hansas started - Jazz leading Adam cross the line with Jane and then Niall next. Issac was a good bit behind the other four.
Lap 2 Ed increased his lead over
Rupert to 24 seconds with James now in third place ahead of Geoff. Bill dropped
a place to lie fifth with Pete behind him. Jazz still seventh was now 28
seconds ahead of Adam. Niall held ninth
place with Issac behind him, having passed Jane.
Lap 3 Ed continued to stretch ahead
of second place Rupert with Geoff back to third as James dropped back to lie
fifth behind fourth placed Bill. Pete remained in sixth place. Jazz was still
having a tussle with Adam leading him over the line by 11 seconds. Niall and
Issac followed this pair as Issac finished and Jane retired.
Lap 4 Rupert was by then, in second
place, 40 seconds behind the leader Ed. Bill moved ahead of Geoff in third
place with James still fifth ahead of Pete. Adam sneaked across the lie 3
seconds ahead of, now, eighth placed Jazz with Niall astern.
Lap 5 The top three places remained
as in lap 4 with James back up in fourth place now ahead of Geoff and Pete
still sixth. Jazz won the fight back to lie 7th ahead of Adam by 10 seconds and
Niall brought up the rear of the fleet and being finished here.
Lap 6 Ed and then Rupert led the
leet with James going ahead of Bill to lie third. Geoff remained in fifth place
ahead of Pete. Jazz still seventh was by then 25 seconds ahead of Adam. The last
pair were finished here.
Lap 7 Saw no place changes in the fast boats from lap 6 with Ed first over the line ahead of Rupert and James unable to catch the pair. James, Geoff, Bill and Pete finished at the end of this lap.
Lap 8 With just two still sailing Ed
crossed the line two minutes and 41 seconds ahead of Rupert.
With calculations done and
Handicaps having been applied the winner of the race was Jazz with Adam in 2nd
place, Ed 3rd, Rupert 4th and Anna 5th. See results below :-

The Breeze was ‘fresh’ although not
overwhelming but it was bitterly cold with it, hence the writers early
retirement. In both races there was a fair bit of overtaking/passing among the ‘fast’
boats but nothing to compare with the Hansa fleet's close battles especially
among the two leaders. Apart from cold hands and feet all seemed to enjoy the
extra bit of wind, compared to earlier races.
The outlook for next Sunday for Race
15, and the rerun of Race 1, looks a bit fresh at present. The Prize giving for
the NumBum Series is projected to take place on Sunday 2nd March, after the
Duncan Dash races – according to the notice on WhatsApp – keep your eyes open
concerning that.
Alan has been publishing this
blog/report now since 2010, and before that under the heading of Piddinghoe
Ponders (although he can no longer find any on line details of that) and feels
that it is about time someone else took over this roll to produce something
similar.
He is happy to provide full details entailed in the task, creating MS Excel spread sheets from the lap sheets, drawing the course maps with MS Paint and using ‘Sailwave’ to work out the results. He can also offer advice on where and when to take the photos (that Bett does now) to input to the, initially MS Word written reports before colating this and Posting on a web site.
