Elford Numbum Race 9 & 10 - 05/02/2023

Elford Numbum Races 9 & 10 – 05/02/2023

Bright blue skies, very cool and with just a zephyr of breeze as we left Hangleton this Sunday morning. Upon rigging at the pond the breeze there was a good force 3 which later got up to force 4 allowing boats to plane on the off-wind legs of the course,

Geoff Sheridan was RO, assisted by ‘An other’ and with the Safety boat crewed by Ian Lambert and Dave Murley. He, Geoff, set an ‘M’ shaped course with the start/finish line between two marks set off the clubhouse, as shown below.

Ten boats came to the line with Thomas Beck sailing his dad Andy’s Laser Radial instead of his usual Topper – in a try-out in the light winds, according to Andy (which strictly were not  so light) and with the return of Todd Grady-Gales (Laser full rig).

Due to battery failure, in both cameras, there is no shot of the start but memory says that both Sean Beevers (Laser full rig) and Todd were away first at the gun near the inner mark with Ed Thorburn (Finn) next to go. Todd shot away and by the end of the lap was leading Ed by 10 seconds and then Sean some 8 seconds later.  Fourth to finish the lap were Michael Veale and Mike Rosier (RS 200) with Zoe McCaig (Laser Radial) fifth, Julian Dobson (Laser full rig) sixth, Alan Simmons (Streaker) seventh, Thomas eighth, Darrell Topp (Laser full rig) nineth and Jo Bruggenwirth (Laser Radial) tenth. With the breeze at the top end of force 3 there were going to be a few capsizes for the less experienced sailor – and there were!

Lap 2 saw no place changes in that order but with the leader Todd now 11 seconds up on Ed and Sean 21 seconds behind Ed.

Lap 3 and again there were no place changes from the order in laps 1 and 2 with Todd extending to 27 seconds ahead of Ed and Sean hanging on 11 seconds behind Ed. Darrell was disqualified – must have sailed the wrong course although the reason was not noted on the lap sheet.

Lap 4 had Todd still leading the fleet with Ed now 17 seconds astern and Sean just 6 seconds further back. Michael went ahead of Zoe by 3 seconds but the order behind was as in previous laps.

Lap 5 had no positional changes throughout the remainder of the fleet as Jo was finished and the gap between Todd and Ed remained at 17 seconds but Sean fell back to lie 21 seconds further back.

Lap 6 with seven boats still sailing saw Todd finish still 17 seconds ahead of Ed and Sean another 32 seconds astern. Michael was fourth, Zoe fifth,  Julian sixth and Alan 7th – the latter pair having held the same positions throughout the race.

With calculations made Todd was declared the winner of the race with Sean second, Zoe third, Ed fourth and Julian fifth.

Race 10 was to be sailed over the same course and positions at the gun were not recorded on camera unfortunately however. Todd and Ed were early leaders 20 seconds apart with Michael another 38 seconds behind Ed and Sean just 1 second  behind  him at the end of the first lap. Alan was lying fifth having had a good start this time with Zoe 24 seconds behind him and Julian a further 12 seconds back. Thomas was 10 seconds behind Julian  and Jo brought up the rear as Darrell did not finish – both the latter pair having had long capsizes, close together.

Lap 2 and Todd retained the lead, crossing the line 8 seconds ahead of Edwith Sean having passed Michael to lead him by 12 seconds at the end of the lap. Zoe went ahead of Alan  by 12 seconds to lie 5th. and Julian was just 2 seconds astern of Alan with Thomas another16 seconds further astern. Jo once again brought up the rear.

Lap 3 had no place changes down the fleet which Todd still led now nearly a minute ahead of Ed and Jo did not finish (too much swimming?).

Lap 4 was still led by Todd some minute and 24 seconds ahead of second placed Ed. Sean was third nearly two minutes astern of Ed  with Zoe holding fourth place 10 seconds behind Sean. Alan in 5th place led Julian with Thomas in 8th place, ahead of Michael who must have had a disastrous capsize taking him back to 8th place.

Lap 5 Todd had stretched his lead over  Ed to a minute and 37 seconds with Sean a  further minute and 48 seconds behind and just 12 seconds in front of Zoe.

Alan was holding on to 5th place a minute and 10 seconds further back but still 28 seconds ahead of Julian who it is thought also ‘tasted’ the water. Thomas held 7th place with Michael as tail end Charlie. Michael, Thomas, Alan and Julian were finished at the end of this lap.Julian who it is thought also ‘tasted’ the water. Thomas held 7th place with Michael as tail end Charlie. Michael, Thomas, Alan and Julian were finished at the end of this lap.

Lap 6 was sailed by just four boats with Todd crossing the finish a minute and 54 seconds ahead of Ed. Sean was next home a minute and 49 second later with Zoe finishing fourth 18 seconds later.

With the calcs done Todd was declared the winner with Zoe second, Sean third, Ed fourth and Alan fifth.

In the first race the breeze began to build and by the second it was a lively force 4 plus some.

Zoe was going like a train and Thomas did exceedingly well in the’light’ (Dads term) breeze. Even the swimmers had a good time, if not race.

The current out-look (forecast by XCWeather) for 12th Feb  is for a little less lively breeze from the east south east- south east.

Alan.S 1832.

PS. Appologies for the lack of Pics but both cameras are now fully charged and will be used to the full – if Bett comes to the Pond!
