Freeman Iceberg 2022 - Races 3 & 4 - 13th Nov 2022

 Freeman Iceberg Races 3 & 4 – 13th Nov 2022.

Sunday morning, Remembrance Sunday, dawned bright, Sunny and dry. The forecast for Piddinghoe, on XCWeather was for 9 knots but on arrival at the pond there was barely a puff blowing. It did fill in a little just before the two minutes silence was held in front of the clubhouse.

Ed Rollestone, as RO, and Lewis Johns as ARO (with Alistair Fortune and an-other in the safety boat) set a similar course to that last week - a simple straight Trapezoid, initially with a committee boat start, changed to a windward start from midway along the south shore when the breeze eventually filled in.

Race 3, of the 2022 Freeman Iceberg series,  started at 11.15 and at the gun Sean Beevor (Laser full rig) was first across the line with Alan Simmons (Streaker) next, to windward, with Ed Thorburn (Finn) third to cross followed by Thomas Beck (Topper) fourth to go.

Sean was first to arrive at the windward mark, south of the Island with Alan close behind and the Ed.T. Along the run behind the Island Ed.T went ahead of Alan and closed in on Sean then to pass him on the following reach to finish the first lap in pole position in 5 minutes 35 seconds with Sean 2nd and Alan 3rd. In 4th place was David Hitchens (Laser full Rig), with Michael Veale and Mike Rosier (RS 200) 5th, Dave Murley (Laser Radial) 6th, Julian Dobson (Laser full rig) 7th,Terry Jones (Laser full rig) 8th, Bill Waites (Laser Radial) 9th, Thomas Beck (Topper) 10th, Andy Beck (Moth, Classic) 11th, Jo Brulgenwith (Laser full rig) 12th, Darrel Top (Laser full rig) 13th, Colin Cryer (Laser Radial) 14th and Judd Bramah (Topaz) 15th.

Lap 2 saw no place changes among the leading three dinghies but Michael.V pulled ahead of David Hitchens and Julian moved ahead of Dave .M.  Bill.W moved up to 8th with Andy.B astern of him and Thomas.B behind him in 10th. Terry.J dropped down the fleet to lie 11th but there were no changes behind him.

Lap 3 saw Ed.T continue to lead the fleet with Sean behind him, now by 36 seconds, as Michael.V overtook Alan, being able to fly his Gennaker on all of the three legs to gain 3rd place. David.H held onto 5th place with no changes in the next four position. Terry.J went back ahead of Thomas.B but with no further changes behind him.

Lap 4 Ed was still in the lead now 43 seconds ahead of Sean with Michael.V still 3rd ahead of Alan. There were no place changes in the next two boats but Dave.M dropped right back to 14th and Terry went up to lie 9th behind Andy.B wit Darrel.T with Darrel.B in to10th place having gone ahead of Jo.  Colin.C and Judd.B remaining in 13th and 15th respectively.

Lap 5 With Ed still in the lead by 46 seconds Michael.V was still holding off Alan.S by 62 seconds David.H was passed by Julian.D to take 5th place. Bill.W held onto 7th place with Andy.B still behind him as Darrel.J got ahead Terry.J and Dave.M pulled back to 12th behind Jo.B. Thomas.B dropped to 13th as Colin.C dropped down the places to cross the line 14th, Judd.B having already finished at the end of the previous lap.

Lap 6.saw no places changes among the top 4 boats from the previous lap but David.H went back ahead of Julian.D to lie 5th with Andy.B behind him. The remainder of the fleet had already been finished.

Lap 7 had just the top 4 boats still racing but the order remained as for lap 5, Ed.T, Sean.B Michael.V and Alan.S respectively. Ed.T obviously found a little extra bit of puff crossing the line nearly 5 minutes ahead of Sean.B

With handicaps applied and calculations carried out Ed.T was the winner of the race with Sean. 2nd, Alan.S 3rd, David.H 4th and Julian.D 5th. As in the table below:-

Race 4 was held over the same course with the wind in a similar direction and wind speed – force 2-3 ish.

At the gun the same three boats led off the line, Sean.B at the pin end, Alan.s to windward of him and Ed.T nearest to the south shore. Thomas.B was fourth to cross the line with Michael.V downwind.

Sean.B was too low , as was Ed.T allowing Alan to round the mark off the south of the Island in pole position. It was not long however before Ed.T passed Alan.S to take the lead that he was to hold for the rest of the race. At the end of Lap 1 the order was Ed.T 1
st, Alan.S 2nd, Michael.V 3rd, Sean.B 4th, J>ulian.D 5th, David.H 6th, Andy.B 7th, Bill.W 8th, Dave.M 9th, Thomas.B 10thj, Jo.B 11th, Darrel. 12th, Terry Jones 13th and Judd.B 14th. Colin C did not participate in this race.

Lap 2  The order of the first three boats was unchanged but with Julian.D getting ahead of Sean.B to lie in 4th place. There were no place changes in the next four but Darrel moved up the order to, lie 10th ahead of Jo.B as Thomas.B slipped back to lie 13th.

Lap 3 saw Ed.T leading Michael.V who had managed to squeeze past Alan.S as Sean.B went up to 4th place ahead of Julian.D.  David.H held onto 6th place ahead of Andy.B as Bill.W plummeted down to 12th allowing Dave.M into 8th place. Terry.|J also found a spurt to lie 9th ahead of Jo.B and Thomas .B. Darrel.T also took a tumble dropping to 13th ahead of Judd.B.

Lap 4 Ed.T was still in the lead but Alan.S managed to retake second place ahead of Michael.V – these two were nip and tuck through the race. Behind them Sean.B, Julian.D and 7th.David.H retained their relative positions. Meanwhile BillW made a comeback and went ahead of Andy.B to lie 7th. Dave.M dropped back astern of Jo.B to lie10th with Terry.J dropping with him. Thomas.B also lost a place to cross the line 12th but ahead of Darrel.T and Judd.B.

Lap5  Ed.T and Alan.S still held on at the front as Sean.B went ahead of Michael.V to lie 3rd. there were no place changes between the next five as Terry.J gained a place astern of Jo.B with Thomas.B 11th, Dave.M , Darrel.T and Judd.B had finished at the end of the previous lap.

Lap 6 The final lap saw Ed.T cross the line two and a half minutes ahead of Alan.S who had held off a late challenge by 3rd placed Sean.B.  Julian.D was next to finish in 4th place ahead of Michael.V . Dave.H was next to finish 7th and last.

With the Calculations finished the winner of the race was Ed.T with Alan.S 2nd Sean.B 3rd, Julian.D 4th and Davvid.H 5th – as in the table below:-

A Grand Day for a sail, some would have liked more breeze, but for yours truly it was ideal and if I may say so, two very good results for my Streaker. The lack of breeze on the long windward legs was quite taxing for all, hence a lot of place changing. The forcast  (XCWeather)  for next Sunday looks a bit up and down but certainly more wind than today’s – keep your eyes peeled but turn up anyway.

Can I make a small appeal, please sign on for the racing but make sure that you use Capital Letters and that these are clearly readable, thanks in anticipation.

Alan.S 1832.

PS. The Results shown on these blogs are my calcs, go to the NSSC web site for the offical ones.
