Streaker Ramblings - Freeman Iceberg 2020 - Races 2 & 3 - 06.12.2020

Blue Skies, light winds from the north greeted the 12 boats who went afloat for the re-start of the 2020 Freeman Iceberg series on Sunday 6th December.

Laurence Venus was the RO , assisted by Mary Harland, with Thomas Harland-Smith in the safety boat along with Michelle Smith - and he set an M shaped course with an initial leg to windward, along the west bank, from a line off the clubhouse – as shown below.

At the Gun it was Ed Thorburn in his Finn, close to the bank, who was first to cross the start line having clear wind and being to weather of Rupert Smith in his Streaker. Having been blanketed, by Ed, Rupert was third away as Sean Beevor (Laser full rig) was a bit nearer to the middle of the line.

Near the Pin end a disaster was about to happen when Alan Simmons (Devoti D Zero) attempted to get to weather of Eleanor Beck (Topper).

Alan headed up too quickly and rammed her transom. Adding to that he had too much momentum he pushed her boat through 90 degrees and capsized her. He went about and continued
turning, calling out to ascertain that she was OK and saw her eventually right her boat, before performing another full turn and then commencing to start to race. Due to the fact that races were held back to back – no coffee break – he could only see that she had gone back to the bank and had packed up and gone home before the racing finished. Thus he was unable to tell her how mortified he was for the upset on what must have been her first ever venture out racing in the Topper.

Back in this the first race (No 2 on the calendar) Ed led the first lap with Matt Springall (Laser full rig) pulling out ahead of Sean and Rupert to end the lap in second place. Zoe McCaig (Laser Radial) was fifth across the line behind fourth placed Rupert with Tim Cox (Laser Radial) sixth, Michael Veale and Mike Rosier (RS 200) in seventh place. Julian Dobson (Laser full rig) was eight, Bill Wates (Laser Radial) ninth, Thomas Beck (Topper) tenth and Alan eleventh and last.

Lap two saw no place changes at the front of the fleet but Matt closed up to Ed crossing the line 19 seconds behind and Sean a further 32 seconds behind him. Michael went ahead of Tim and Alan passed Thomas.

Lap 3 saw Ed edge away from Matt whilst Rupert went ahead of Sean – by 1 second. Mid fleet there were no changes and Alan passed Bill whilst Thomas brought up the rear and was finished.

Lap 4 – the final lap had Ed cross the line 52 seconds ahead of Matt whilst Sean went back ahead of Rupert to finish 3 seconds ahead. Alan clawed his way back up the fleet to cross the finish in fifth place ahead of Michael who had in turn passed Zoe.

With handicaps applied and times corrected Matt was declared the winner with Rupert second and Ed third.

The second race of the day began almost immediately after the last boat, Bill finished in the first race.

Once again it was Ed who chose to cross the line at the shore end but he was beaten to it by Alan who started at the pin end.

Michael was third across with Rupert just to windward and Zoe to weather of him. At the windward mark it was Alan who arrived first but failed to ease off for the run quickly enough allowing both Matt and Ed to slip past on the inside. By the end of the lap Matt crossed the line 5 seconds ahead of Ed with Alan third 12 seconds later. Rupert was fourth, then Tim, Sean and Zoe. Julian was eighth, with Michael ninth and Bill tenth.

Lap 2 saw no place changes in the front four boats but Tim dropped back to eighth having been overtaken, in order, by Sean, Michael and Zoe.

Lap 3 had Ed take over the lead from Matt, by 3 seconds at the line with Alan third to cross having made up some space on Matt and with Sean just ahead of Rupert. The order behind these five remained as before.

Lap 4 and Ed was in the lead from Matt still by 41 seconds with Alan 6 seconds astern of Matt and Sean a further 46 seconds behind. There were no other place changes.

Lap 5 - the final Lap – and whilst Ed pulled a bit further ahead Alan and Matt exchanged places back and forth with Matt crossing the finish in second place five seconds ahead. The order in the rest of the fleet remained as in laps 3 and 4.

With the calculations complete Matt was again the winner with Rupert second, Ed third and Sean forth. Alan was back in 7th place – better than his eleventh in the first race.

Ideal conditions, good breeze, Sunshine but cold with it for the restart of the Iceberg series. Enjoyed by all, bar one, Hopefully next

Sunday will be as Kind.

Thanks go to Mary Harland and Terry Jones for the photos (and others) taken using my camera – without which this report would be rather bare!

Alan Simmons (DZ 224)
