Streaker Ramblings- Freeman Iceberg Races 9 & 10 - 01.12.2019

Streaker Ramblings – Freeman Iceberg Races 9 & 10 – 01.12.2019
Grey cloud cover, with the odd blue patch and a fresh breeze on leaving for  Piddinghoe this Sunday 1st December for Races 9 & 10 of the Freeman Iceberg Series of races.
On arrival here was a good force 4 blowing from the east and the RO Penny Springall, assisted by Thomas Harland –Smith with Zoe McCaig in the safety boat plus an –other as crew, set an ‘M’ shaped course with the initial beat towards a mark off the Fisherman’s Bay as shown below:-

Eighteen boats took to the water for race 9 with the start set for 10.30. At the Gun it was Matt Springall (Laser full rig) who was first across the somewhat short line with Laurence Venus (Hadron H2) second to go to weather of him and Duncan McDonald (Streaker) third away at the shore end in his first race of the Series. Duncan had to quickly tack off onto port with just about enough room to clear the rest of the fleet.

Duncan was first to round the weather mark followed by Ed Thorburn (Finn) with Matt next, then Laurence with Alan Simmons (Streaker) behind him.

By the end of the second leg, a run towards the mark in the middle of the pond, there was a real gaggle all trying to round at the same time.

Places sorted out a bit on the next beat towards the mark off the middle of the east bank, the reach behind the Island and the second reach up the south shore.

Ed was first to round the start/finish mark followed by Duncan, Matt , Sean Beavors (Laser full rig) Laurence and then Alan. Positions in all the laps are as shown below:-

Initially the breeze was quite fresh but it soon tailed off and more glimpses of blue sky appeared throughout the race.

Thomas Beck was an early casualty taking a rather Gymnastic capsize, at least one more was to follow for him.

Michael Veale and Mike Rosier (RS 200) had the opportunity to fly their Gennaker, especially on the long leg up the south shore.

At the end of the sixth lap, contended by eight boats - all the others having finished on their fifth lap – Ed was firstto cross the finish line nearly a minute and a half ahead of Duncan with Sea third, Laurence fourth, Matt fifth and Alan sixth.
With the times corrected the winner was Duncan, second place was taken by Ed, third by Sean, fourth by Alan and fifth by Matt.

Race 10 starting at 11.55 and the wind had come back again, even a bit stronger than at the start of the first race of the day and with the blue sky opening up too.

Lucy McCaig (Laser Radial) led off the line, unfortunately for her she was a bit too eager and was over the line. She was informed, from the shore and by Mum on the safety boat, but declined to return – her result was calculated – in this blog - on the basis that she had sailed only five laps. She was sailing very well for the entire race and would probably had a very good result if only she had gone back immediately.

Duncan was therefore first properly away again from the shore end. Ed was next up and then Laurence with Alan not too far behind and Matt yet a little further back but to windward. Laurence continued towards the bank and by the time he tacked had half the fleet to windward of him.

Ed was first to round the mark at the Fisherman’s bay followed by Matt, Duncan and Lucy with Alan behind her.

On the downwind leg Laurence had recovered somewhat and turned just astern of Alan.

Again there was a real bunch, eight boats, all trying to get round the mark at the end of that leg but soon spread out on the subsequent beat. Laurence and Alan contested fourth and fifth place throughout this lap with Laurence finally crossing the line just 3 seconds ahead with Ed in the lead from Duncan who had gone ahead of Matt by five seconds – all very close.

Ed held his lead for the rest of the race with Lewis Johns (Laser Radial), Sean, and Lucy all passing Alan in Lap 2.

In that lap Matt had his mast snap at the joint between top and bottom sections and that was the end of his race.
There were quite a few place changes further back in the fleet notably Yves Horrent (Laser Radial) who went up from eleventh to lie eighth and Michael from twelfth to lie ninth. Lap three saw Laurence up to third astern of Ed and Duncan and Alan had near capsizes, three times, when he lost control of his tiller on the second beat. Geoff Sheridan (Byte CII) rushed up from fourteenth to briefly lie eighth. Lap 4 had no changes in the top five boats  but Geoff dropped back to tenth place and Thomas Beck had another capsize as did Julian Dobson (Laser full rig).

The first race was tricky when the wind dropped off and the second even trickier when it came back up with a vengeance for the seventeen competitors, Anne Bush did not sail.
