Streaker Ramblings - Freman Iceberg 2019 - Races 3 & 4 -10/11/2019

Blue skies with a fair bit of heavy white cloud and a gentle breeze as we left Hove for Piddinghoe Sunday morning, 10th November. On arrival it was still bright and a fair bit of cloud but the breeze was now fresh, about top end force 4. Laurence Venus was unwrapping his Hadron and was a mind to use the smaller of his two sails but within minutes decided not to sail after all. Some sixteen other boats did however venture onto the waters. The Race Officer, Michael Veale (RS 200, NSSC) assisted by Anna Freeman and with Mike rosier (his Crew) and Amanda in the safety boat, set an’ M’ shaped course – as shown below – with the somewhat short start/finish line just east of the clubhouse.

First to cross the line near the pin end was Ed Rollestone in his laser 4.7. Just to leeward was Lucy McCaig in her Laser Radial and third away, behind but to windward, of these two was Jonty Freeman also in a Laser radial. Rupert Smith in a Streaker was to leeward of the group. The fleet split with most tacking off towards the South East whilst the remainder stayed on starboard tack towards the Fisherman’s Bay – wrong mark?

First up the leg from the mark behind the Island was Sean Beevor in a full rig Laser with Jonty behind him. Lying third at this stage was Zoe McCaig ( Radial) with Rupert just outside her and Ed Thorburn a good bit closer to the south shore just behind.

By the end of the lap Jonty was in the lead followed by Ed.T and then Rupert third.  Thomas Harland-Smith (Radial) was lying fourth, with Zoe fifth.
See the Spreadsheet below for all competitor positions throughout the race:-

From the above it can be seen that Jonty continued to lead Ed.T in the 2nd lap  with Rupert.S going ahead of Thomas.H-S to lie third a positon Rupert maintained to the finish of the race. Thomas H-S dropped behind Zoe in lap 2 only to regain fourth in th next lap and hold on to that position to the finish.
In lap 2 Zoe passed Thomas to hold fourth place only to lose out again in lap 3 when Ed.T also managed to pass Jonty.F.  Alan Simmons (Streaker) having sailed for the wrong mark at the beginning of the race languished in mid fleet throughout the race finishing the first lap in ninth. He did gain a couple of places in lap 2 and another in lap 3 only to lose out again to Zoe in the final lap finishing seventh.

With handicaps applied and corrected times calculated the winner was Jonty Freeman, with Rupert Smith second, Ed Rollestone  third, Ed Thorburn fourth and Thomas Harland-Smith fifth.

Race 4 was held over the same course – with minor mark repositioning.

First across the line, midway between bank and shore, was Ed Rollestone in his Laser 4.7 with Thomas.H-S next at the pin end. Ed .T was next closer to the shore with Sean.B next to cross. Just behind them Alan.S who had been alongside Rupert, until the latter got into a clash with Thomas Beck (Topper 4.2) – and came off worst.- finally got not a bad start and soon tacked off to port correctly.

By the end of the first leg, from behind the Island, Ed.T was leading from Jonty.F and Alan.S had just gone ahead of Thomas.H-S but they were pursued by quite a pack of close up boats. For this race the breeze had dropped of quite a bit and Alan began to pull out a bit from Bill Waites (Laser full rig) who was by then ahead of Zoe.Mc and Ed.R. By the end of the first lap the order was Ed.T first, Jonty.F second, Alan.S third,Bill.W fourth and Zoe.Mc fifth.

Lap 2 saw no change in position among the front four boats but David Hitchens went from tenth place up to sixth, passing Thomas.H.S, Zoe.Mc, Rupert.S and Julian Dobson (Laser full rig) on the way. By the end of the next lap he was back, down the pan, to twelfth place. Rupert.S lost a one place to lie eighth just ahead of Julian.

Lap 3 again saw no place changes among the front four but Rupert gained another two places to lie sixth behind Thomas.H-S positions they each held to the finish. Positions for the rest of the fleet remained the same for the final lap.

At the finish the order was Ed.T with Jonty second, Alan third, Bill fourth and Thomas fifth – that is to say that Ed went on to do another circuit of the pond.

With elapsed times corrected and handicaps applied the result was a win for Ed Thorbun, with Jonty Freeman second, Alan Simmons third, Ed Rollestone fourth and Thomas Harland-Smith fifth.

Somewhat variable conditions this morning, with a steady blow gradually fading away into the second race of the day –somewhat sooner than had been forecast.

PS.This blog is much delayed due to week long problems with my Computer – now, hopefully, fixed and up and running again.
