Streaker Ramblings -Elford Numbum Races 11 & 12 - 12.02.2017

Solid  dark grey overcast with a light breeze from the east as we left Hagleton en- route to Piddinghoe on Sunday morning 12th Feb. As we approached the pond the sky to the south was brighter and the sun was just visible but it failed to put in a real appearance until we had been home again for a couple of hours. In fact there was a bit of light rain and a stronger breeze for the sailing.

Laurence Venus offered himself as RO for the racing, well he has already tied up the series with a virtual clean sweep of race wins and volunteers for the duties have been few and far between this year. With a solid wind direction he was able to set a slightly complicated course, as shown below, with an initial windward leg towards a small mark placed just to the north of the Island followed by a run back towards a mark off the middle of the south bank and a second beat towards the south east corner. Another windward leg followed behind the Island and then a reach towards the Fisherman’s bay and a final run back to the mark in the south west corner, close to the clubhouse.

Sixteen boats went onto the water for the start of race 11 and first to cross the line, from the south bank close to the first slipway, was Rupert Smith (Streaker) at the north end with Lucy McCaig (Topper) in the middle of the line with Chris and Charlie Foster (Laser II) at the shore end. Charlie Rigg (Topper) was next away with Alan Simmons (Streaker) following, having decided wrongly to stay nearer to the shore. Rupert found clear air and plenty of height to round the near Island mark well in the lead from Zoe Mcaig (Laser Radial). Alan made up a good bit of ground to round just behind Bill Wates (Laser full rig) and Chris. Along the leg behind the Island Rupert began to pull away as Chris pulled ahead of Zoe. Alan and Julian Dobson (Laser full rig) passed Bill.W with Michael Veale and Mike Rosier (RS 200) closed in on Bill.

At the line at the end of the first lap Rupert was leading Chris by 23 seconds with Zoe third and Alan Fourth. Julian was liying 5th,. Bill.W and Michael Michael crossed the line on equal time but Michael managed to get his bowsprit caught in Bill’s Mainsheet and pulled his boom into his forestay, The pair continued along the South shore for some way before they were able to get untangled.

Dave Murley (Laser Radial) crossed the line 8th, Tom Taylor (Laser full rig) 9th, Penelope Duncan (Laser Radial) 10th, Charlie 11th, Richard Beal (Laser Radial) 12th, Miles and Joe.H (RS Vision) 13th, Lucy 14th, Roger  McCall, 15th and Aston.F and Piper M (RS Vision) 16th. Roger was so far down the fleet due to a very lengthy engagement with the reed bed on the south shore. With the wind, a good top end force three, pinning him there until he eventually freed himself to find that everybody else had well and truly started.

Lap 2 had Rupert still out in front of the fleet with Chris reducing his lead to 10 seconds and extend from Zoe who also made a slight gain from Alan who just about stayed ahead of Julian. Bill. W having disengaged from Michael fell back to lie a minute behind Julian but still in sixth place. Tom gained from the ‘interlock’ to go up to 7th place passing Dave on the way. Penelope went up to 9th as Miles made big gains to lie 10th having passed Charlie and Richard. Richard also went ahead of Charlie and Roger gained back a place by passing Lucy. Aston and Piper managed to get themselves disqualified by missing a mark on the way round the course although they were unaware and continued to sail for another lap.

Lap 3 and there were no place changes in the position of the front three boats but Chris was just 2 seconds astern of Rupert at the end of the lap.Julian got ahead of Alan, also by just 2 seconds as Tom passed Bill to lie 6th. Further down the fleet there were no positional changes until 13th place which Roger now took passing Charlie to leave Lucy still in 15th place.

Lap 4 saw Chris take the lead from Rupert by quite a margin (32 seconds) as Zoe held onto third place as Alan closed the gap a bit and to leave Julian some way behind. Bill.W got back ahead of Tom to lie 6th. Dave remained at 8th as Michael passed both Penelope and Miles, who also passed passed her. Roger gained another place passing Richard and Charlie continued to lead Lucy.

Lap 5 the final lap and Rupert regained the lead to cross the finish 2 seconds ahead of Chris with Zoe 15 seconds ahead of Alan. Julian was home in 5th place Ahead of Bill.H with Michael having finally pulled back up to 7th. Tom dropped back from 7th to cross in 10th place behind Dave and Miles and Roger went ahead of Penelope. With the handicaps applied the winner was Rupert with Charlie second, Zoe third and Alan fourth.

Race 12 was sailed over the same course but the breeze had dropped a little and shifted a little towards the south – the  leg along the south shore now required a tack. The two Plumpton RS Visions and Lucy did not start in this race. But Connie Sturt (Slipper) did, having missed the first race of the day.

Rupert was first across the line at the pin end with Michael next from the middle of the line. Third to go was Roger and then Alan both near the pin end. Alan and Roger held on starboard tack a good way towards the Fisherman’s bay whilst Rupert and Michael tacked back towards the Island mark a bit sooner.

Michael was first to round with Rupert behind him, then Bill.W, Roger and Alan. At the end of the run to the middle South bank mark the first three got around but Alan and Roger had the bulk of the fleet on their wind and then between them and the mark including a new entry, Duncan? (Streaker). Pushed towards the south bank they had to tack to make the south east mark. Rupert went ahead of Michael behind the Island with Bill.W behind and Duncan behind him. Roger was lying 5th ahead of Alan with Julian 7th, Tom 8th= Zoe 8th =, Dave 10th, Penelope 11th, Richard 12th, Charlie 13th and Connie 14th.

Lap 2 and Michael went ahead of Rupert, doubtless aided by the Gennaker on the RS 200 on the offwind/down wind legs. Duncan went ahead of Bill.W and Roger closed in on him too with Alan still 6th and Julian behind him.Dave paased Tom and Zoe to lie 8th, with Penelope still 11th, Richard 12th, Charlie 13th and Connie 14th and finished.

Lap 3 Michael pulled away from Rupert a little in the lap to cross the line 14 seconds ahead as Duncan closed the gap a bit. Roger passed Bill.W to cross the line 2 seconds ahead and Alan hung on to a 1 second lead over Julian. The order behind these boats remained unchanged during this lap.

Lap 4 Rupert regained his lead ahead of Michael to cross the line 19 seconds ahead. Third place went to Duncan and fourth to Julian as Roger and Bill went off to the mark on the first windward leg of the course allowing Julian and Alan to sneak through.Dave stayed in 8th place ahead of Zoe whilst Penelope and Richard went ahead of Tom and Charlie was Tail ender.

Lap 5 , the final lap with Rupert crossing the line just ahead of Duncan by 3 seconds and Michael 18 seconds behind him. Alan just scraped ahead of Julian to finish 4th, one second ahead with Bill.W next having just scraped a one second advantage over Roger. Zoe came home 8th having overtaken Dave.

With handicaps applied the winner was Rupert with Duncan second , Alan third and Michael fourth

It was not exactly hot and the wind and rain did not make it any better but the breeze was good. One capsize was noted, as Richard fell in when along side Met’s Jetty and Tom was seen to be rescued from an appointment with the reeds on the West bank.
