Freeman Iceberg Races 5 & 6 - 17/11/2024

Freeman Iceberg Races 5 & 6 -17/112/2024

Blue skies with a bit of whiteish clouds and a gentle breeze as we left for Piddinghoe on Sunday morning 17/11/2024, though it was not too warm. On arrival several boats were beginning to rig and a change into the Dry Suit was called for.

Laurence Venus was once again RO for race 5 & 6 and he was assisted by Connie Sturt with Rupert Smith and Clive Muir in the safety boat. Laurence set an ‘M’ shape course with the start from the bank close to the Hansa launching area on the south bank and the finish line from the jetty by the clubhouse - as below:-

Photos by Elizabeth (Betty) Simmons

At the gun it was Alan Simmons (Streaker) first across the line nearer to the south bank than the rest of the fleet. Second away was  Andy Hamilton (Laser full rig) to weather and Geoff Sheridan (Byte CII) third away. The next three were Mark Ramsay (Supernova) to weather of Zoe McCaig (Laser Radial) and Red Sheridan (Oppy). Ed Thorburn was well back from the line but ended up first up the initial short beat to the mark off the clubhouse. Mark was second to round that mark with Alan following.

The Hansa fleet (5 boats) set off a minute after the main fleet with Jazz Turner (848) well to windward of the rest, near the pin end of the line. Next away was Isaac Hughes (32) followed by  Adam Billany (28), Jane Thompson and Bea Brammah (12) and lastly Anna McNaughton and Niall Macmenemin (65).

Back with the main fleet Ed was in the lead on the run approaching the mark in the middle of the pond with Mark second, Alan third, Geoff fourth with Zoe having the inside water from Andy Hamilton (Laser full rig) with the rest of the fleet strung out behind.

Following the beat towards the mark off the Fisherman’s bay Ed began to pull away in the lead from Mark who had Alan not far astern. Next along this leg was Zoe who had pulled ahead of Andy with Geoff behind him.

This order remained unchanged  on most of  the beat up the south shore. Alan went ahead of Mark  by 8 seconds at the finish line with Zoe 26 seconds later. Then came Andy.H and Geoff, followed by Ewan Hamilton (Laser 4.7). Darrel Top (Laser Radial) was next to finish the first lap with David Hitchens (Laser radial) behind him, 13th. Jazz was next to cross the line  with Red Sheridan behind her and Jake astern of him. Next came Adam in 18th place  with Rachel Baker (Laser 4.7) 19th. then Anna with Jane in 20th position.

Lap 2 and Ed led from Mark now ahead of Alan by 17 seconds and Zoe 59 seconds aft. Geoff went ahead of Andy.H to lie 5th as Jo  passed Carolyn and Ewan dropped back behind her to lie 9th.  David.H  gained three places passing Andy.B, David.M  and Darrel. Jazz remained in 14th place but Red dropped back to 17th behind Isaac and Adam. Jake also lost ground to lie18th but still ahead of Rachel. Anna and Jane remained in 20th and 21st place.

Lap 3 There were no place changes in the leading first four boats but Zoe closed the gap on Alan by 8 seconds. Andy.H went up to lie 5th having past Geoff as Jo was dropped to 9th behind Carolyn and Ewan. Dave.M went back ahead of Dave.H as Andy.B retained his 12th place. Darrel, Jazz and Isaac remained as in lap 2 with Rachel climbing up to 16th with Jane behind her and up to 187th with Jake still 18th.  Adam dropped down the list to lie20th behind |Anna and Niall with Red as tailender.

Lap 4 Ed was still well in the lead from Mark but there were no place changes in the top six with Carolyn dropping back to lie 11th,. as Ewan moved up to 7th with Jo, Dave.M and David.H each moving up a place. Andy.B was next in 12th with Jazz behind him having passed Darrel. Rachel was 15th with Adam behind her, then Red, Isaac and Jake. Anna and Jane had finished at the end of Lap 3 and Ewan,Andy.B, Darrel, Jazz, Isaac, Jake and Adam were finished here.

A bit more breeze than last week but not a lot making for some close racing with places gained or lost in a blink of the eye. Again the ‘slow’ boats won all the honors showing the ever increasing skills of the youngsters.
