Freeman Iceberg Races 1 & 2 - 03/11/2024

 Freeman Iceberg 2024 Races 1 & 2 03/11/2024

Grey overcast skies, but bright, with little or no breeze as we left Hangleton heading for Piddinghoe. On arrival there was a little more wind allowing Laurence Venus (RO for the FI Series) to set a roughly rectangular course with the first leg to a mark in the south east corner. The start line was square to the south bank from the flags just west of the first slipway and the finish from the start mark to the clubhouse as shown below:-

At the gun, for the main fleet – 17 boats , all were spread fairly evenly along the line with Ed Thorburn (Finn) just edging over first, in mid line, with Zoe McCaig (Laser Radial) second over and Ewan Hamilton (Laser 4.7) third away. At the pin
end Alan Simmons (Streaker – Lancing SC) was hot on the heels of a Laser (Helm unknown) who happened to be over the line and was recalled allowing Alan a clean start.

At the end of the first windward leg Ed.T was first to round with Rupert Smith (OK) next and Alan.S close behind. Zoe.M was close behind Alan and ahead of Mark Ramsay (Supernova). The remaining fleet was fairly well spread out going up the leg off the east bank and the following running leg.

Approaching the finish mark Ed.T was in the lead crossing the line 8 seconds ahead of Rupert with Alan 13 seconds later. Mark
crossed the line in fourth place 9 seconds later with Zoe 10 seconds after. Michael Veale and Mike Rosier (RS 200) were 6th, Springall (Laser Radial) 7th, Julian Dobson (Laser full Rig) 8th, David Hitchens (Laser Radial) 9th, Ewan Hamilton (Laser 4.7) 10th, Sean Beevers (Laser Radial) 11th, Bill Wates (Laser Radial) 12th, Dave Parkins (Laser Radial) 13th, Jon Pickup (Laser full Rig) 14th , Harvey Pickup (Topper) 15th, Andy Hamilton (Laser full rig) 16th and Red Sheridan (Oppy) 17th.

The small Hamsa fleet, having started a minute behind the main fleet arrived at the finish line in 18th and subsequent positions. There are not many results recorded other than their final finishing places.

Lap 2 and the first four places remained unchanged from lap 1. Sean swept through his part of the fleet to cross the line in sixth place ahead of Zoe whilst Michael dropped back to 9th and Julian went back to 14th.

Lap 3 Again the leading four boats held the same positions as Zoe went back to lie 5th  and Michael went up to 7th with Matt just astern. Andy dropped back to 8th with ~Julian behind and Sean behind him. Ewan dropped back to 13th.

Lap 4 Ed led with Rupert behind and Alan still in 3rd position as Matt gained 3 places to lie 4th ahead of Mark, who in turn dropped to 8th place. Zoe and Michael retained 5th and 6th place respectively. According to the recorded results there was quite a bit of place changing back down the fleet.

Lap 5 The top 5 boats remained in the same positions as in lap 4, Mark improved to 6th now ahead of Michael, with Andy back behind him. Julian  remained in 9th position, followed by Sean, David.H, Bill and Ewan.

Lap 6 No place changes in the top five boats As Matt finally squeezed past Alan to take 3rd place with Mark now back ahead of Michael, Andy, Zoe, Julian, Sean and David.H. in that order. Bill in 12th place followed by Ewan, Dave.P and Red were all finished here.

Lap 7. The final lap saw Ed cross the line in first place with Rupert 3 minutes and 36 seconds behind. Matt was third a minute and ten seconds later with Alan 4th 12 seconds later and Mark fifth another 23 seconds astern.

With the handicaps applied the winner of the race was  Red Sheridan (Oppy) with Ed Thorburn (Finn) second, Ewan Hamilton (Laser 4.7) third, Rupert Smith (OK) fourth and Alan Simmons (Streaker) fifth.

It was a fairly light wind for the day which made for quite a few place changes through the fleet. Well done to the Oppy and Laser 4.7 who cleaned up the day.

The writer has not included the Hansa fleet of four in this report, there was a lack of results in Race one which prevented giving individual lap positions in Race 1 not to mention a change of helm in 22848 between the two races. And the minute later start did not help.

Alan Simmons (Streaker 1832).
