Elford NumBum Races 7 & 8 -21/01/2024
Partches
of blue showing through high white and grey cloud, dry, cool with a light
breeze as we started the journey to Piddinghoe this Sunday morning for Races 7
& 8 of the 2024 NumBum series.
On arrival there were several boats already rigged on the bank and a total of 15 signed on.
Sean Beevers
as RO assisted by Tina.Stiko, with Bill Wates and V Walt in the safety boat, set an ‘M’ shaped
course as shown below. With the start from the small jetty north of the
sailboard beach in the South Eeasterly breeze – force 3 to start with.

At the gun it was Todd Grady-Gales (Solo) who
was first across the line at the shore end with Ed Thorbun (Finn) second away
near the shore end. Rupert Smith (Laser Radial) was third away to weather
followed by Alan Simmons (Streaker) and then Michael Veale and Mike Rosier (RS
200).
At the
windward mark, in the south west corner, Ed was first to round followed by Rupert,
then Todd, Alan and Mark Ramsay (Supernova). Next onto the reach were Michael,
Andy Beck (Lightning), Geoff Sheridan (Byte CII) and Dave Murley (Laser
Radial). Next to round were the two Hansas of Jazz Turner and Adam Bivary
followed by Chris Turner (Laser Radial). Bit further back were Jo Bruggenworth
(Laser Radial) and Darrell Topp (Laser Radial) followed by Rod Sheridan (Oppie).
Connie Sturt (C Stop) was being towed back to base and seen to have suffered a
rigging error which meant that her Gaff was flying horizontally.
Ed was
first to round the mark in the southeast corner followed by Rupert, Todd and
then Alan with Mark just astern and Michael behind him. At the end of the lap
the order was Ed 1st, Rupert 2nd, Todd 3rd and
Alan 4th. Mark was 5th with Geoff 6th having
passed Michael 7th, Chris 8th, Andy 9th, Dave
10th, Jo 11th, Darrell 12th, Jazz 13th,
Adam 14th and Rod 15th.
Lap 2
saw Ed pulling away from the rest of the fleet with Todd second, Alan third 10
seconds later. Mark was fourth with Michael fifth. Rupert was now lying sixth having
been overtaken by Todd, Alan, Mark and Michael. Behind this leading group Geoff
was ninth having been passed by Dave and Chris. Darrel was 10th
having gone ahead of Jo followed by Andy. Jazz, Adam and Rod held their same relative
positions.
Lap 3 with
Ed still in the lead Alan went ahead of Todd to lie second who dropped back to
lie fourth as Mark also passed him. Michael held on to fifth place as Chris
moved up behind him. Geoff also gained places to lie seventh passing Dave who
had slipped back. Rupert also dropped down the fleet to lie twelfth astern of Darrel
who had been passed by Andy. There were places changes behind the above.
Lap 4
Ed’s lead was now some four minutes from second placed Alan with Mark just 10
seconds behind. Todd dropped back to lie sixth as first Chris passed him and
then Michael. Rupert made great strides pulling back to lie seventh ahead of Geoff.
Jo held on to 9th place as Dave went behind her and Andy dropped
behind both.
Lap 5 saw
Mark pass Alan, by 9 seconds, to take second place with Chris still fourth
ahead of Michael. Todd in sixth remained ahead of Rupert and Geoff. Dave got
back ahead of Jo to lie ninth with Andy behind her. Jazz went ahead of Darrel.
Adam and Rod were finished at the end of this lap.
Lap 6.
and there were no place changes among the leading five boats but
With
Calculation done the winner of the race was Jazz with Ed second, Chris third,
Alan fourth and Rupert fifth.

Race 8 was to be sailed
over the same course, with a minor change in length of the start line.
Ed was
first to round closely followed by Geoff and then Jazz with Todd outside of
her. At the mark in the middle of the pond the leading three boats hardened up
and set off on starboard tack to pass to the east of the Island whilst a
couple, Rupert and Jazz, tacked off to get past the island on the western side.
– not sure that that paid off. By the end of the lap the order had settled down
to Ed in first place, Geoff second, Mark third, Todd fourth and Michael fifth.
Alan was eighth with Rupert ahead and Chris astern. Andy was ninth with Dave
behind, then Darrel ahead of Jo in twelfth.
Jazz was thirteenth, Adam fourteenth and Rod fifteenth. Connie does not appear
on the lap sheets thus if she actually started she did not complete the first
lap.
Lap 2 with Ed out front
Mark went ahead of Geoff to lie second – by 9 seconds, Todd, Michael and Rupert
remained in their same relative positions but Chris went ahead of Alan. Dave
forged ahead of Andy and Darrel dropped astern of Jo Jazz, Adam and Rod retained the same places
as in the first lap.
Lap 3 saw no place
changes in the leading five boats but Chris went ahead of Rupert as Alan also
passed him to lie 7th. Andy went ahead of Dave but there were no further place changes.
Lap 4 with the leading
three boats retaining their relative positions, Michael went ahead of Todd to
take 4th place behind Ed, Mark and Geoff. There were no places
changes further down the fleet.
Lap 5 Michael slipped
back from 4th to 7th place allowing Todd, Chris and Alan all to gain
a place as Rupert remained in 8th. Andy retained 9th place with Dave
10 seconds astern but without place changes behind. Jazz, Adam and Rod were
finished here.
Lap 6 the penultimate lap
saw no place changes in the leading four boats but Alan squeezed past Chris by
4 seconds at the line. Dave went ahead of Andy to cross 24 seconds ahead. Darrel
brought up the rear. Rupert, Dave, Andy, Jo, and Darrel being finished here.
Lap 7 saw Ed cross the
line in first place followed by Mark 2nd, Geoff 3rd,
Chris 4th, having passed both Todd and Alan. Michael was last to
finish in 7th place across the line.
With the calculations
done the winner of the race was Jazz once more with Ed second again, Geoff 3rd,
Chris 4th and Adam 5th.

After
last week – 21st Jan – this week it was comfortable, in fact a very
pleasant sail, provided one did not mess up the starts. A good sized fleet
(15/16) led to some interesting challenges/battles on the water with several close encounters. The writer appreciates that some competitors like the
more lively winds but ‘survival sailing’ is not to his liking.
