Elford
NumBum 2024 – 11/2/2024
Overcast
with high grey cloud, just a hint of a breeze and just after some heavy rain as
we left home for Piddinghoe. After passing through Kingston there was an excess
of water on the roads, half way across at some places, showing how heavy the
rain had been. On arrival at the Pond several boats were already rigged on the
south shore.
Ed Thorburn was RO, initially without an ARO (John Freeman stepped in to help) with Alisdair (Fortune?) in the safety boat crewed by John ?. With the breeze from the north west Ed set an ‘M’ shaped course as below:-
Photographs by Bett Simmons
The first leg was a
one sided beat to a mark off the Fisherman’s Bay followed by a run to a mark in
the middle of the pond. The next leg was a fetch towards a mark in the middle
of the pond and then a run behind the Island. There was then another fetch up the south bank to a
mark in the south west corner with a final short beat to the finish mark off
the clubhouse.
Bill Wates (Laser Radial) was fourth round the mark setting off on the downwind leg followed by Andy with Dave Murley (Laser Radial) and lastly Darrel Topp (Laser Radial).
Mark
stretched ahead of Alan, to round the mark in the south east corner whilst Zoe
clung on to Alan’s stern on the following leg. At the finish line Mark was
still in the lead 19 seconds in front of Alan with Zoe 36 seconds further
back. Bill was 4th, Dave 5th, Andy 6th and
Darrel 7th.
Lap 2 saw no place changes throughout the fleet with Mark now leading 40 seconds ahead of Alan and Zoe 14 seconds behind him. With Bill still 4th 34 seconds later as Dave closed the gap on him to 20 seconds.
Lap 3 had Mark still out front, 13 seconds ahead of Alan with Zoe 21 seconds later. There were no place changes behind the tree leaders.
Lap 4
Mark continued in the lead with Alan 26 seconds ahead of Alan and Zoe gaining a
little to lie 7 seconds astern. Again there were no places changes behind these
three boats.
Lap 5
saw Mark cross the line 9 seconds ahead of Alan with Zoe 15 seconds astern. There
were minor changes in the gaps of the other four boats but no change of order.
Lap 6
the final lap had no change of order throughout the fleet with Mark first to
cross the finish line 48 second ahead of Alan and Zoe third to finish 19
seconds later. Bill was fourth, Dave fifth, Andy sixth and Darrel seventh.
With
calcs done the winner was Zoe with Alan second, Bill third, Mark fourth, Dave
fifth, Andy sixth and Darrel seventh.

Race 12 starting at
11.50 was held over the same course with a minor adjustment to take the mark
off the Fisherman’s Bay a little closer to the shore, to provide a true beat.
At the Gun it was Alan again first nosing across the line nearest to the west bank with Mark near the pin end and Zoe in mid line third away. Alan had the best height and rounded the windward mark just ahead of Mark with Zoe a little behind.
It would appear the Mark got too close to the mark, hit it and had to complete a 360 degree turn. Dave was fourth to turn the mark in the middle of the pond with Bill just getting the inside here ahead of Andy and Darrel some way behind.
Lap 2 Alan just held
his lead crossing the line 7 seconds ahead of Mark with Zoe 3rd 26
seconds later. Dave came next with Bill next, in fifth place, having passed
Andy by 22 seconds.
Lap 4 Mark continued in
the top spot with Alan 20 seconds behind and Zoe still third with the order
behind these three unchanged.
Lap 7, the final lap
saw Alan cross the line in first place 9 seconds ahead of Mark. Zoe was third
with the following order Bill in 4th place, Dave 5th and Andy 6th. Darrel having been
finished at the end of lap 6.
With calculations done
the winner of the race was Alan with Zoe second, Bill third, Dave fourth and Mark fifth.

A very enjoyable pair of races (especially for
the writer) with light breezes but some very close racing in the fleet. The sun
did occasionally break through for a few minutes but did not last. It remained
dry for the racing however, but on the way home the Mazda MX5 had its roof open
until reaching the Brighton/Hove border, a few spots of rain had it closed up,
luckily, as the skies opened once more.

PS. If anyone would like a lift to the Dinghy
Show at Farnborough on Saturday 24th Feb give me a bell on 01273 230652 – room for
two adults plus a young one in the Mini – leaving Hangleton, Hove at 0900.
PPS. There are several photos of the
Wingsailors pinned on the clubhouse notice board at Piddinghoe - please take!
