Freeman Iceberg Races 9 & 10 – 4/12/2022
The morning dawned grey and overcast with a gentle breeze – at Hove – in spite
of an XCWeather forecast of 15 -16 knots. On arrival at the Pond the breeze was
found to be quite manageable for the writer.
Ed Thorburn was RO assisted by Garaint Alercot Jones (co-opted from the Galley) with John Scosfer and Kevin Kingston in the safety boat. Ed set a somewhat complicated course – as below –with an ‘offshore’ start between two white marks and an ‘onshore’ finish to the pink mark, adjacent to the nearest white mark off the clubhouse.

At the gun Thomas Beck (Topper) was first across the line with Alan
Simmons (Streaker) to windward of him
and second to go with Dave Murley third but to leeward.
A little behind Michael Veale and Mike Rosier
(RS 200) were fourth to start and quickly tacked off on port, towards the
Island. Fifth and last to start was Darrel Top (Laser full rig).
Lap two saw Michael still in the lead but Alan had closed the gap to 12 seconds with Dave dropping back slightly to lie 20 seconds behind Alan. Bill was still fourth behind Dave by 33 seconds, a tiny bit further back. Darrel and Thomas were neck and neck with just 3 seconds separating them.
Lap 3 had Michael still in the lead by 11 seconds from Alan with Dave a
further 12 seconds behind but pulling away from Bill, by 55 seconds. Thomas, just

of the former, and 48 seconds ahead of Bill. Darrel was now back, upright and ahead

As stated at the beginning
of this report the breeze was not up to the level forecast but was ideal for
all those racing, with the odd occasional gust keeping everyone on their toes,
lest they fall in. It could have been a bit sunnier – and a lot warmer – but one
cannot have everything. All enjoyed their outing on the water. Great calls of
joy were heard in the showers from those new to their delight.
Until next Sunday – 11th
December – the writer will refrain from quoting the weather forecast – just turn
up and enjoy, even if that is only viewing from the banks.
