Grey overcast skies, with
just a hint of blue patches, little if any breeze although the forecast was for
6 to 7 knots as we left for Piddinghoe. Little change was obvious as we arrived
at the pond but there was a tiny bit of breeze from the east allowing the Ro,
Ed Thorburn (assisted by Philip Clare with Barry Lowton and ‘another’ in the
safety boat) to set a course as below with a ‘Committee boat ‘ start:-
Eighteen
boats came to the line and first away was Penelope Duncan (Laser Radial) in mid
line with Lewis Johns (Radial) next close to the pin (starboard) end.
Next up
was Laurence Venus (Hadron H2). Bill Wates (Laser full rig) attempted a Port
tack start at the Committee boat end to be fourth away. The rest of the fleet
was split between starboard and port tacks with Laurence, Penelope, Alan Simmons
(Streaker) and Bill, having been forced to tack, holding on to Starboard with
Lewis, Ed Rollestone (Laser 4.7), and Rupert Smith (Streaker) going east.
By the windward mark Laurence was out in front with Alan not far astern and by the mark off the clubhouse Rupert was up to third place with Lewis lying fourth and Bll fifth with Zoe McCaig (Laser Radial) close behind him. Within a few yards Julian Dobson (Laser full rig) had gone ahead of Bill and Zoe with Ed.R now astern of her and Michael Veale and Mike rosier (RS 200) just head of Dave Murley (Laser Radial).
After
one full lap Laurence was in the lead with Alan some 30 seconds behind and
Rupert ten seconds behind him, Julian was
fourth with Bill fifth.

With
the breeze still very light and patchy – non existant in some places – Laurence
held the lead in lap 2 and Rupert went ahead of Alan at the mark off the
clubhouse and to pull away somewhat. Julian led Bill and closed up on Alan.
In
lap 3 there were no places changes among the leading ten boats and the fourth
and final lap was contested only by the leading four competitors with Laurence
first, Rupert second , Julian third and Alan fourth to cross the line. With
times corrected and handicaps applied the race was won by Rupert with Alan
second, Julian third and Laurence fourth as shown in the table below.

The second race of
the day, race 6 of the series, was held over the same basic course but with the
committee boat now at the port end of the line. The breeze was now lower than
ever but just about enough to allow the fleet to cross the line at the start
gun.
It is difficult to
see from the photo but it is thought that Laurence was first to cross the line
to weather of Rupert and with Zoe closer to the Committee boat. Alan is nowhere
to be seen in the melee, behind 6420 (Lucy)? but must have been up there somewhere as he was second,
after Laurence, to turn the mark off the Fisherman’s bay.
Next around was Rupert just ahead of Julian and then came Michael followed by Zoe. Then came a ‘mob’ with Terry Jones (Comet), Penelope, Ed.R and Bill all in close order.
The next three boats were Toby Rollstone (Laser Radial), Lucy McCaig (Laser Radial) and then Lewis with Andy Beck (Moth) and Dave Mutley (Laser Radial).

The second, tedious, lap saw Laurence pull well away from Alan and Alan also increasing the gap between himself and third placed Rupert. Julian remained in fourth place whilst Bill overtook Michael to finish fifth.
With handicaps
applied and times corrected the winner was Laurence with Alan second, Rupert
third , Julian fourth and Thomas Beck (Topper 4.2) fifth.

It was a frustrating pair of
races with very little breeze and what there was very variable in direction,
none the less all bar one finished both races.
Please note that the results
shown in this blog are the writers ‘opinion’ and may be subject to change by
the NSSC Sailing Secretary including the Handicap for Andy Beck’s Moth –
nothing in the NSSC club handicaps or in the RYA PY numbers!
Alan.S 1700.
PS. I managed to miss type
the blog address in my last emails to prospective readers. It is “http//:streakerramblings.blogspot.com”.
I had typed ‘/’ instead of a ‘.’ in front
of blogspot. You could always add the site to your ‘favourites or bookmarks’,
then you will not need to rely on the full address.
