Streaker Ramblings - Freeman Iceberg 2019 - Races 1 & 2 - 03.11.2019

Blue skies, no breeze and quite warm as we left Hove for Piddinghoe on Sunday for the first races of the 2019 Freeman Iceberg Series. After Saturday we had wondered if it would even be possible to sail but on arrival at Piddinghoe there was not a breath of wind and the water was like a mill pond.

More in hope than anger the Race officer, Jo West, assisted by Anna Freeman  - with Rupert Smith and Barry Lowton on the safety Boat - had ‘pencilled in’ a course as shown below in the hope that some breeze would arrive for the 10.30 start time. With some seventeen boats rigged on the bank it was an anxious wait but the first few hints, a zephyr, came about ten minutes before the race was due to start.

At the Gun it was Ed Thorburn in his Finn  who was first away at the pin end of the line closely pursued by Laurence Venus in his new Hadron H2 and then Bill Wates in his Laser full rig. At the shore end Julian Dobson also in a full rig Laser hit the line just to windward of Alan Simmons in his Streaker (Lancing SC). Both of them were headed for the wrong new Blue mark (mark courtesy of Jonty Freeman).

At the correct mark Ed led Laurence round, these two already well clear of the rest of the fleet with Thomas Harland Smith (Laser Radial) followed by Bill Wates and then Ed Rollestone in his Laser 4.7.

On the following leg, a run across to the east side of the pond Alan. S went to the south of the bunch and passed about five boats to lie behind Thomas.H/S.

By the end of the lap Ed.T was just three seconds ahead of Laurence with Thomas.H/S 2.25 minutes behind and with Alan.S a further 32 seconds behind him.
Below you will find an extract from the Excel sheet showing the relative positions of the fleet showing how boat positions changed throughout the race.

As can be seen Laurence.V went ahead of Ed.T in the second lap and Alan.S moved into third place, gradually pulling away from Thomas H/S and catching up with Ed.T to finish some 40 seconds behind him.
Julian.D  was having a battle throughout the race with Bill.W only to pass him and Thomas.H/S in the final lap to finish fourth.
With handicaps applied, and the times corrected, the winner of the race was Alan.S just 11 seconds ahead of second  placed Laurence.V with Thomas. H/S third, Bill.W fourth and Ed.T fifth.

For race 2 the course was adjusted slightly moving the first mark further to the east as shown below.

Alan. S having gone ashore at the end of the first race and started to de-rig realised that there was another race and so had to rapidly re-rig, getting back afloat just before the start sequence began.

At the gun it was David Hitchins (Laser full rig) first across the line at the pin end with Terry Jones (Comet) just above him. Third to cross the start line was Laurence.V. Alan.S was a bit further back with Ed.T to windward but with several boats ahead.

By the end of the first leg Laurence.V was away ahead  followed by Ed.T with Terry.J and David.H behind  second and third. At the end of the beat towards the clubhouse  Laurence rounded the mark off the clubhouse substantially ahead of  Terry.J and David.H with Bill.W in front of Alan.S and Julian.D behind him. By the end of the first lap Laurence was a minute and a half out ahead of Ed.T with Alan.S some two minutes further behind but just seven seconds ahead of David.H and Julan.D nineteen seconds further back.

Some very tricky conditions with so little breeze, rarely above force 2 – sitting out was very much not the rule. Laurence showed great pace in his new boat although it was not all plain sailing for him. At least after Saturday’s gale we did have two races on a lovely sunny and warm day.

PS. Comments please on the revised format of this blog – the use of the lap charts - which allow my readers to check out their positions each lap. It does mean that my commentary is not as verbose as previously and some competitors are not mentioned.
PPS. Thanks to the person who found my watch in the changing room and left it on a clothes hook. As I wear it all the time I was devastated to get home and find it was not in my sailing bag. I went back down on Monday, in all that rain, and recovered it safely
