Streaker Ramblings - Freeman Iceberg Races 9 & 10 - 03.12.2017

Due to being away this Sunday 3rd December this report is compiled on the basis of the lap sheets and some notes from Laurence Venus who was sailing in both races.
It would seem that the breeze was lightish, force 2 to 3, from the north west, from the general direction of the Fisherman’s Bay and thus Anna Freeman as RO, assisted by Connie Sturt, set a course with something akin to an ’X’ shape as shown below, with the start and finish well east along the South bank. Twenty one boats came to the start line for the first race of the day.

At the start Duncan McDonald (Strreaker – NSSC) was first away with Chris Foster (Laser full rig – Lancing) next and then Rupert Smith (Streaker – NSSC) . Chris Turner (Lasr Radial – NSSC) was forced onto the wrong side of the ODM and had to restart with Laurence Venus (Streaker- NSSC) also pushed up , into wind ending up almost last to start. By the end of the first lap Chris.F was in the lead from Duncan – by 6 seconds – with Rupert in third place. Paul Ryan (Laser full rig – Hardway) was lying fourth with Laurence by then up to fifth with Julian Dobson (Laser full rig – NSSC) close astern and Jonty Freeman (Laser Radial - NSSC) a further 10 seconds back. Chris.T was just six seconds further back in eighth position. Geoff Sheridan (Byte – NSSC) held ninth place ahead of Stephen Hamilton (Pico – red Sail – NSSC) .Bill Wates (Laser Radial) was lying eleventh in front of Terry Jones ( Comet –NSSC), next came Ian Johnson (Laser Radial – NSSC) with Dave Murley (Laser Radial – NSSC0 behind him. Roan Briggs (Topper – NSSC) crossed the line in fifteenth place with Ed Rollestone (Oppie – NSSC) next, then Kattie Trollope (Topper – NSSC) in seventeenth, Jazz Turner (Slipper - NSSC), Thomas Beck (Oppie – NSSC), Elana Beck (Oppie – NSSC) and lastly  at twenty first Amanda Borradale (Pico – Purple Sail – NSSC).

Lap two saw Chris.F  holding the lead with Duncan and Rupert behind him . As Paul and Laurence approached the windward mark, off the Fisherman’s Bay, on starboard tack they found a Pico approaching it on Port tack. The Pico came to a virtual stop forcing Laurence to bear away but the Pico still drifted into him, as Paul managed to get to windward of the Pico and tack away round the mark. Laurence then did an Alan and snagged the mark warp dragging it along as several other boats overtook him. Rupert meanwhile stayed close on Duncan’s heels with Paul crossing half a minute later and Laurence having caught up somewhat half a minute later. There were no further place changes between the first nine boats but Dave gained four places to lie tenth with Bill, Terry and Ian behind, Stephen had drooped down the order to lie fourteenth ahead of  Roan and with no further cajnges in the order of the following six boats.

Lap 3 Chris  was still just ahead of Duncan at the end of the lap – by 8 seconds – with Rupert another 10 seconds back. Paul was up to 4th with Laurence lying fifth twenty seconds astern. Jonty held onto seventh ahead of Chris.T with Geoff Dave and bill in unchanged positions as Ian passed Terry to lie twelveth with Roan, Ed and Katie behind in sixteenth place . Stephen, Jazz, Thomas and Elna having finished at the end of lap 2.

In lap 4 Duncan just sweezed past Chris.F to cross the finish line five seconds ahead  with Rupert just nine seconds astern. Laurence also passed Paul to take fourth place With Jonty overtaking Julian to cross eight seconds in front. Chris .T maintained eighth place, throughout the race, to cross ahead of Geoff who in turn head Dave, Bill, Terry and Ian.

For the second race of the day the breeze had freshened a little, force 3 plus, and as a result four of the cadets did not sail as neither did Jonty. At the gun it was Duncan away first in clean air with Chris next but to leeward of Laurence. Paul, Julian and Chris.F were nearby and although initially overtaken by them Laurence caught up with them only to yet again snag the mark warp and alow them to pass him again. By the end of the first lap the order was Duncan, already nearly as minute ahead of Chris.F with Julian behind him with Laurence fourth and Paul fifth. Next came Rupert with Chris.T seventh, Geoff eighth, Dave ninth, Bill tenth and Terry eleventh. Roan held twelveth.Ian was lying thirteenth, Jazz next up ahead of Ed. Thomas was in sixteenth and last place.
Lap 2 had Duncan now a minute and a half ahead of Chris.F with Laurence up to third place not far behind having overtaken Julian. Rupert at fifth had gone ahead of Paul with Chris.T still holding seventh place. Geoff dropped back two places as Dave and Bill went ahead of him. Terry also held his former lap position at eleventh with Roan astern and Ed astern of him. Ian had dropped back to sixteenth behind  Jazz and Thomas.
Lap3, the final lap and Duncan continued to stretch out his lead, to nearly two minutes ahead of Chris.F Laurence closed in but was unable to catch Chris. The remaining competitors retained their relative positions to the finish.

Regretably there are no photographs for these races, I did think of using some from previous races but that would be cheating. For the series overall races follow ths link to the NSSC web site where you will also find the table for the Cadets – their relative positions extracted from the main race results - http://www.nssc.org.uk/cms/index.php/club-series-results
