Yet again a mismatch between
the forecasts – 14 – 16 knots – and the reality as we left Hove this morning.
Barely a breeze in evidence and little more as we arrived at Piddinghoe, it was
sunny and warmer than last Sunday – no Ice in the boats or covers. The breeze
was from the North (the direction of the Fisherman’s Bay) thus Laurence Venus,
RO for the day, set the course as shown below. The start was from a line
through the south west corner mark to a Pink mark further east along the
southern shore. The latter mark was not used after the starts and the Island
had no required side on the third and fourth legs. It being Remembrance Sunday
racing did not start until after the minutes Silence and time to get afloat at 11.15
am.
.At the start of Race 3
(first of the day) Chris Turner (Laser Radial) was first across the line with
Rupert Smith (Streaker) a touch higher than Alan Simmons (Streaker) but a
trifle behind and fourth placed Jo West (Laser Radial). Ed Thorburn (Finn)
attempted a port tack start at the inshore end of the line but had to pass
astern of the front pair. Rupert and Jo then tacked off quickly onto port and
Ed slipped through the gap.
Behind the front bunch Tiger Cox (Topper) led a
group off the middle of the line with Zoe McCaig (Laser Radial) below him and
Ian Johnson (Laser full rig) by the inner mark. Off on port tack were Dave
Murley (Laser Radial), Michael Veale and Mike Rosier (RS200) and Bill Giles
(Solution). Due to the extra speed of the Finn, Ed soon passed Rupert and rounded
the Windward mark in front of the fleet. Alan was next to round followed by
Rupert close behind and then Chris a little further astern. The following run
saw no place changes at the front with Alan first to harden up for the second
beat in the lap and after rounding the mark in the middle of the east shore set
off on the second run of the lap. The final leg was a close reach along the
southern shore and Alan managed to hold off spirited challenge by Rupert.
So
positons at the end of the first lap were Ed 1st - 45 seconds ahead
of Alan 2nd - Rupert 3rd, Chris 4th, Jo 5th
and Michael 6th. Julian Dobson (Laser full rig) was 7th,
Andy Richlinski (Laser full rig) 8th
Zoe 9th, Dave 10th, Bill.G 11th and
Geoff Sheridan (Byte original rig) 12th. Penelope Duncan (Laser
Radial) was 13th, Ian 14th, Richard Beal (Laser Radial)
15th Tiger 16th, Colin Cryer (Laser full rig) 17th
and Jazz Sayed (Sailboard) 18th.
Lap 2 and Ed was still in
front but now 39 seconds ahead. The fight for second place got tighter, so tight
that Alan and Rupert crossed the line with identical times recorded. Next were
Chris and Jo whilst behind them Julian passed Michael to lie 6th.
Bill.G passed Dave to go 10th and Geoff crashed back to 15th
behind Dave, Penelope, Ian and Richard and Colin passed Tiger as Jazz brought
up the rear.
Lap 3 Rupert began to pull
away from Alan and crossed the line 20 seconds ahead. Alan’s, kicker attachment on the boom started
to slide forwards towards the mast and he could do nothing to stop it, thus he
lost sail control to a large degree. Ed
in the Finn was still in front and back to 40 seconds ahead of Rupert. Behind
Alan 3rd, Chris and Julian were next across the line with Andy now 6th,
having overtaken Julian and Michael with Zoe and then Bill.G behind them. Colin
gained five places to lie 11th in front of Dave, Penelope, Ian and
Geoff as Richard dropped back to 16th ahead of Tiger and Jazz.
Lap 4 and Ed was now forty
six seconds ahead of Rupert who in turn was 60 second ahead of Alan. Chris was still 4th followed by
Julian and Michael. Colin climbed another
three places to lie 8th whilst
Jo dropped back 9th. Bill.G
overtook Zoe to hold 10th place and Ian passed Penelope to lie 13th.
Richard pulled back a place to lie ahead of Geoff and Tiger.
Lap 5 no place changes in
the three leaders but the duels for thrust place led to Chris, Andy and Michael
all crossing the line on the same recorded time, Julian having been passed by
Michael on the way. Jo went back to lie 8th ahead of Bill.G with Zoe
next, then Dave as Ian dropped back to lie 15th with Geoff last to
cross (and finish) 16th.
Lap 6, the final lap, with a
reduced fleet saw Ed finish first nearly 2 minutes in front of Rupert who in
turn was a minute and thirteen seconds ahead of Alan. Andy made a slight gain
ahead of Chris to take 4th place with Colin climbing another two
places to lie 6th, Jo 7th, Zoe 8th, Bill.G 9th
and Dave 10th.
With Handicaps applied it
was Rupert 1st, Alan,2nd, Chris 3rd and Ed 4th.

Race 4 began at 12.30 pm with
Ed this time right at the inner mark, Rupert behind him, Alan just on his stern
and Tiger just to weather of Alan. The next group was led by Ian to weather,
Geoff near the shore end, Richard, then Penelope and lastly Michael. For this
race there were seven less starters coming to the line leaving just eleven
competitors. Again Ed was first to the windward mark with Alan second, having
just gained a touch ahead and to windward of Rupert and these two continued to
battle throughout the race.
At the end of the lap Ed was 45 seconds ahead of
Alan who in turn was 2 seconds ahead of Rupert. Michael was 18 seconds astern
of Rupert and 18 seconds ahead of Zoe. .Ian was 6th, Penelope 7th,
Dave 8th, Richard 9th, Tiger 10th and Geoff 11th.
Lap 2 had Ed extend his lead
to a minute and five seconds as Alan gained a little on Rupert. Michael pulled
away from Zoe as Ian crashed down to 10th place, Dave went up to 7th
with Tiger behind him and Geoff behind him Richard brought up the rear.
Lap 3 and Ed had extended
his lead over Alan to nearly a minute and a half while Alan pulled away from
Rupert. Alan’s Kicker, having been tightened between races complete with a
capsize alongside one of the moored rescue craft, stayed in place during the
race but he did lose one purchase on his mainsheet – luckily with the light
breeze this was not a problem. Behind the leading three Michael, Zoe , Penelope
and Dave all stayed in the same relative positions as Geoff gained a place to
lie 8th and Richard gained two places to lie 9th as Tiger
dropped back to 11th.
Lap 4, the final lap, Ed crossed the line a minute
and thirty eight seconds ahead of Alan as he crossed 26 seconds ahead of Rupert
– one second place finish for each of them today – with Michael next, then Zoe
5th, Dave 6th who had passed Penelope and the remainder of the fleet
in the same order as in the third lap.
With Handicaps applied Tiger
was the winner with Alan 2nd, Rupert 3rd and Ed 4th once again.

At the gun it was Bill Hudson (Topper) who was
first across the line on port tack having tacked just before the ’gun’. Next
across was Harry Quinn (Oppie) then Bea West (Oppie) and Lucy McCaig
(Topper).then Charlie Rigg (Topper). By the end of the first lap the order was
Bill.H 1st, Roan Briggs (Topper) 2nd, Charlie 3rd,
Lucy 4th= and tied with Maddi Quinn (Topper) 4th= ,
Harvey Jenkins (Oppie) 6th, Keith
Wright (Topper) 7th, Toby Holmes-Ling (Oppie) 8th,
Alexander Danio and Bruno Baker (Peco) 9th, Harry 10th,
Bea 11th and George Quinn (Oppie) 12th.
Lap 2 saw Bill.H drop from
the front of the fleet to the absolute back (according to the timing record) so
that Roan took over the lead Charlie was next around with Lucy 3rd
now 25 seconds ahead of Maddi. Harvey moved up a place to 5th with
Keith behind him and Toby 7th behind him. Alexander was 8th
with Bea 9th, George 10th both having passed Harry who
was then 11th.
Lap 3 had Roan in the lead
by 53 seconds from Lucy who was ahead of Charlie. He crossed the line
simultaneously with Maddi to lie 3rd =. Harvey was next at 5th
with Bill.H now back up to 6th. Alexander had pulled back one
position to lie 7th and Keith dropped back to 8th behind him.
Toby also fell back to cross the line 9th with Bea a place back to
10th and George dropping to 11th. Harry brought up the rear.
Race 4 for the Cadets
started at 12.35 pm again over the same course and from the same start line. Once
again the fleet was a couple of boats less than for the first race of the day. Charlie
got his bow over the line first, on port tack but had just about enough room to
make it ahead of starboard tacking Bill.H and Roan. In the Oppies it was Harvey,
well down the line 4th away overall. On the beat up to the Fisherman’s
Bay area mark Bill.H took the lead from Maddi and Roan, then came Charlie,
Keith and Lucy. By the end of the lap the order was Bill.H 1st,
Maddi 2nd, Harvey 3rd, Keith 4th , Charlie 5th
=,Lucy 5th= , George 7th, Harry 8th,
Toby 9th and Roan 10th.
Alan.S 1700.
Lap 4 was sailed only by the
Toppers Less one with Bill.H having
finished at the end of lap 3) as the all the Oppies had been finished. 1st place was claimed by Roan with
Lucy 2nd, Maddi 3rd having repassed Charlie.
With handicaps applied
Harvey was the winner with Roan 2nd, Lucy 3rd and Maddi 4th.

PS.
The results that I have posted here will not agree with those shown on the NSSC
Web Site For personal reasons I have chosen to keep the two fleets, Seniors and
Cadets, entirely separate whereas the club results show a combined fleet and
extract the Cadets for their own Trophy series.
