Streaker Ramblings - Freeman Iceberg Races 1 & 2 - 06.11.2016

The forecast was for 16 to 18 knots but as we left home in hove there was barely a whisper and on arrival at Piddinghoe there was little more and what there was was coming from the North East. Chris Turner as RO for the day set a course, as shown below, which was basically a figure of eight with the landward end of the line close to the second slipway (from the compound entrance) to a mark out towards the only remaining visible Island.

 

 

Race one started on time at 11.00 am with five boats near the pin end, Rupert Smith (Streaker) ahead of a Laser Radial (hidden in the shot of the start but probably Tim Cox). Laurence Venus (Streaker) was third away with Alan Simmons (Streaker) fourth and Dave Murley (Laser Radial fifth. A bit further towards the shore Bill Giles (Solution) started on port and tacked onto starboard just below but ahead of Laurence. At the windward mark Bill.G was first to round and set off on the reach to the mark off the east shore with Alan close behind and Rupert a length or so further back and Laurence a length or so behind him.

Alan spotted that it needed a short hitch, after rounding the east shore mark, before tacking to make the mark off the Fisherman’s Bay in one tack and passed Bill.G, who had tacked immediately, to round it in the lead and set off down the run to the mark in the south east corner. Laurence had also passed Rupert and headed off to pass the island on the east side but was unable to make ground on Alan or Bill.G 

 

 At the end of the lap Alan was still in front followed by Laurence, 2nd , Bill.G  3^rd and Rupert 4th. Bill Wates (Laser full rig) crossed the line fifth  with Michael Veale and Mike Rosier (RS 200) 6^th and followed by Zoe McCaig  (Laser Radial) 7th, Carolyn Turner (Laser Radial) 8^th  Dave Murley 9^th. Jo West (Laser Radial)  and Tim Cox crossed the line simultaneously in 10^th place with Chas Humphries (Laser Radial) 12^th, Tiger Cox (Topper) 13^th, Geoff Sheridan (Byte- Origianal rig) 14^th,Richard Beal (Topper) 15^th and Jazz Sayed (on a Sailboard) 16^th.

Lap 2 saw Alan hold onto a slender lead from Laurence as Bill.W passed both Bill.G  and Rupert to lie third.Michael and Zoe  both got ahead of Rupert who had then dropped back to 7^th. Tim pulled slightly ahead of Jo, both of whom passed Carolyn and Dave, there wer no further changes behind this group.

Lap 3 and Alan drew a few metres further away from Laurence and Bill.W remained ahead of 4^th placed Bill.G with Michael still 5^th.  Rupert went back ahead of Zoe with Tim and then Jo astern. Dave went ahead of Carolyn to lie 10^th but with no place changes behind.

Lap 4 As a bonus to Alan, still leading the fleet, Lauernce managed to miss the gate and had to return to complete the lap correctly and opening up a gap of just over a minute but with Bill.W another minute behind him in 3^rd place. Rupert worked past Bill.G and Michael to,lie 4^th. Tim went ahead of Zoe to lie 7^th and Dave passed Jo as Chas overtook Carolyn.

Lap 5 saw Laurence recover some of the lost tim/distance behind leader Alan with no change of order from third placed Bill.W to 9^th placed Dave. Jo retired (Thought to be due to gear failure) and Richard disqualified himself (sailed wrong course?) moving Chas up to 10^th , Carolyn 11^th, Tiger 12^th and Geoff 13^th.

Lap 6 saw Alan cross the line in first place with Laurence still 40 seconds adrift.with Bill.W 3^rd, Michael 4^th Rupert 5^th, Bill.G 6^th and Zoe 7^th.

With Handicaps applied it was a clean sweep for the Streakers, Alan 1^st, Laurence 2^nd and Rupert 3^rd. for the full results see below for the Seniors.

 

Race 2.started a little late, at 12.10 hrs, with Geoff closest to the pin end of the line and Jo nearer to the shore but travelling faster. Rupert was third way between these two but with Laurence getting the inside berth at the pin end mark and with clear air was immediately off in the lead. Bill.G started in fifth place with Alan behind but to weather. Tim Cox Came to the line later but well up towards the pin end mark. By the windward mark Laurence was around first and away clear with Tim second to round ,then Jo and Alan after her. By the end of the lap the order was as above with Michael 5^th, Rupert 6^th, Bill.G 7^th, Chas 8^th, Zoe 9^th, Carolyn 10^th, Bill.W 11^th, Dave 12^th, Geoff 13^th,Tiger 14^th, Jazz 15^th and Richard having started then Retired.

Lap 2 and Laurence continued to power away now best part of a minute ahead of second placed Tim with Alan just behind him having overtaken Jo. Behind them there were no changes of place between Michael 5th, Rupert 6^th, Bill.G 7^th and Chas 8^th. Bill.W moved ahead of Zoe now 10^th and Carolyn dropped back to 14^th having also been passed by Dave 11^th, Tiger 12^th and Geoff 13^th with Jazz still plugging away on her surfboard.

Lap3 Laurence was now a minute and a hlf out in front of Tim and Jo back up to third, Alan Having let go of his tiller as he started on the running leg across the pond and ended up hitting the mark and stopping dead. Michael and Rupert were still 5^th and 6^th  with Bill.G still 7^th. Dave had clawed back three places too lie 8^th ahead of Bill.W, Zoe and Chas.Tiger, Geoff and Carolyn were still12th, 13^th and 14^th respectively.

Lap 4 Laurence was so far ahead the only chance of catching him were if he decided to go ashore for a coffee – which of course never crossed his mind. Tim was still ahead of Jo who in turn was in front of 4^th placed Alan . Dave overtook Bill.G to lie 7^th  as Zoe moved back up to 8^th place as Bill.W dropped back to 10^th behind Chas 9^th. Tiger was 11^th and Carolyn back up to 12^th with  Geoff 13^th and Tail ender.

Lapa5 had no change of position among the leading six boats  as Bill.G regained his 7^th place from Dave and Chas dropped back to 11^th behind Bill.W and Tiger went ahead of Carolyn.

Lap 6   saw Alan regain 3^rd place passing Jo to lead her by 30 seconds but still 40 second astern of Tim. Laurence by now was some 2 and a hlf minutes out in front. Rupert in 5^th was now just 12 seconds behind Jo and closing. Bill.W was now up to 9^th on the water leading Chas, Tiger Carolyn and Geoff who were all in the same relative position as in the previous lap.

Lap 7 the final lap was sailed by only six boats, the remainder having been finished in the previous or earlier lap. Laurence was the first to finish by now some three minutes ahead of second placed Tim 22 seconds in front of Alan. Rupert came home 4^th having passed Jo  to cross the line 15 seconds ahead as Michael came in in  6^th place.

With handicaps applied Laurence was the winner with Tiger 2^nd, Tim 3^rd and Alan 4^th. 

 

The first Cadet race started at 11.05 with 8 boats on thee water, three Toppers, 4 Oppies and a Feva. First away, at the pin end of the line was Charlie Rigg  (Topper) with Maddi Quinn (Topper) second up and Bea West (Oppie) third and Harvey Jenkins (Oppie) fourth away. By the end of the first lap the order was 1^st Charlie, 2^nd Maddi, 3^rd Lucy (and tied on time) Harvey. 5^th place was taken by Alexander and Bruno (Feva), 6^th was Toby Holmes-Ling (Oppie), 7^th Harry Quinn (Oppie) and 8^th Bea West (Oppie).

Lap 2 and there were no postion changes among the first five boats but Toby dropped back to 8^th having been passed by Harr and Bea.

Lap 3 the final lap was led from start to finish by Charlie  who crossed the line a minute and a half ahead of Maddi who was two and half minutes ahead of third placed Lucy.Harvey was next followed by Alexander, Toby and lastly Harry.

With handicaps applied it was Harvey the winner , Harry second and Toby third.

 

Cadet Race 2 started at 12.15  with Maddi first away close to the pin end, Charlie was next just below her with Harvey third across the line. Lucy was nearest the pin end but just behind Harvey. As was to be expected, with their speed advantage, the Toppers were soon all well out in front  but this time with Maddi in the lead by the end of the lap. She had a lead of 20 seconds over Charliewho was 35 seconds ahead of Lucy – and Harvey who crossed the line with the same time.

Harry was 5^th, Bea 6^th and neither Alexander nor Toby finished the lap/race.

Lap 2 had Maddi still in the lead and pulling away from Charlie as Lucy closed the gap on him. The remaining three places were unchanged  but Harvey was powering away from Harry and Bea.

Lap 3, the final lap and Charlie was now leading the pack having passed Maddi to cross the line 15 seconds in front with Lucy another 30 seconds behind. Harvey was fourth to finish nearly 3 minute ahead of Harry with Bea as the last to finish.

The handicaps showed that Harvey was again the winner with Harry next and Bea in third place another ‘clean sheet’ for the Oppie fleet.
