- Elford Numbum 2022 –Races 1 & 2 -02/01/2022
- Another grey day with the odd patch of blue sky peeping through and a breeze from the south east, force 3, top end at the start of the racing at Piddinghoe. A small fleet, just eight entries, took to the water in somewhat gusty conditions – still it remained dry bar few spots of rain at times during the racing.
- Rupert Smith was RO with Michelle in support and Andy Beck (Moth) on the safety boat . He decided upon a simple, roughly triangular, course with an ‘offshore’ start and finish line from midway down the south bank, near the second slipway.
First away at the gun was Ed Thorburn (Finn) with Ed Rollestone (Laser Radial) next away and Lewis Johns (Laser full rig) 3rd across the line with Thomas Harland-Smith not far behind.
Photos by Bett Simmons

the line 6 seconds behind him. Alsdair and Thomas.B remained 7th and
8th.
Lap 4 Ed.T led from
ThomasH-S who had passed Ed.R with Lewis
still 4th ahead of Alan who had gained a little on him but with Zoe
just 3 seconds further back .No place changes occurred further back.
Lap 5 Ed.T extended his lead
over Thomas H-S to a minute and 3 seconds and Ed.R closed up on him to lie 12
seconds behind.with Lewis another 7 seconds astern. Zoe found the speed upwind
to pass Alan and cross the line 5 seconds in front. Alsidair’s and Thomas. B’s
positions remained unchanged.

The wind began to increase in lap 6 and Alan, after finishing race 1 , could hear the whistling in the rigging on the boats ashore – a sign of up to force 6 – so he decided not to sail the second race of the day, went ashore and packed up his boat. He was perhaps a little pessimistic as the strength seemed a bit less once the second race was under way.
Regretably at the start of the second race, being busy packing up the D Zero, we missed a view of the actual start – no photos – however those pics Bett did get show that Thomas H-S was first away, followed by Ed.T and then Lewis.
This was the order the end of the first lap with Zoe 4th,
Ed.R 5th , then Thomas.B and lastly Alisdair.
Lap 3 Saw Ed.T still in the
lead, some 25 seconds ahead of Thomas H-S. Lewis went back ahead of Ed.R who
was just ahead of Zoe by 4 seconds and Alisdair passed Thomas.B.
Lap 4 From the lap sheets, the copy of which we have is very blurred, it appears that Thomas regained the lead from Ed.T. With Lewis still lying 3rd, Zoe went ahead of Ed.R and Alisdair pulled away from Thomas.B.
Lap 5 had Thomas H-S still
ahead of Ed.T by 30 seconds with Lewis and behind in unchanged positions.
Lap 6 and Ed.T climbed back
up in front of Thomas H-S but with no other place changes behind and Alisdair
and Thomas.B being finished at the end of the lap.
Lap 7 the final lap had Ed.T
crossing the line 40 seconds ahead of Thomas H-S with Lewis 3rd, Zoe
4th and Ed.R 5th.
With handicaps applied and
calcs completed the winner of the race was Thomas Harland Smith, with Zoe McCaig
2nd, Ed Rollestone 3rd, Ed Thorburn 4th and
Lewis Johns 5th.

It has to be said that the results tell only part of the story as there were lots of battles/engagements going on in both races, with lots of place changes, losses and gains. The increasing wind strength in the first race and it subsequent easing in the second played a significant part in the outcomes for all competitors.
