Freeman Iceberg Races 11 & 12
Grey overcast skies but
still dry as we left for Piddinghoe Sunday morning. The XCWeather forcast was
for 14 knots but on arrival it was less but from a slightly strange angle –
south west ‘ish?
The RO for the day, Julian
Dobson, assisted by P Burch and with Andy Beck and Dave Murley in the safety
boat, set a somewhat convoluted course – as below - with a short, tight, windward leg to a
black buoy about half way up the south shore and then, bearing off, a leg to the
east. This was followed by a beat back towards the south west corner – off the
clubhouse - and upon rounding an off wind leg to a mark off the Fisherman’s bay.
With a gybe to start, the next leg was a broad reach to the back of the Island,
which was the turning mark, then a beat back up the pond, through the start
mark back to the black one.
At the gun Ed
Rollestone (Laser 4.7 – NSSC) was first
away mid way along the line with Duncan McDonald (Streaker – NSSC) second off
but closer to the south bank. Third to
cross the line was Zoe McCaig (Laser Radial – NSSC). Alan Simmons (D Zero - Lancing SC) was last away in the twelve
strong fleet, having not heard the five minute sound signal. However from the
shore end of the line he was able to lay the Black Mark in one tack.
Alan’s luck ran out at the following gybe mark when he very nearly had a dip, probably due to his boom hitting the water, but he is not sure, any way the boat stopped dead and would not get going until several boat behind had passed. A battle ensued among the Lasers behind 2nd placed Ed.T , Thomas H-S crossing the line third, Zoe 4th, Sean Beevers (Laser full rig - NSSC)5th and Ed.R 6th.
Alan was across the line in 7th place ahead of Geoff Sheridan (Byte CII – NSSC) with Bill Wates (Laser Radial) 9th, Tim Cox (Topper – NSSC) 10thand Thomas Beck (Topper – NSSC)11th. Newcomer to the fleet Darrel Topp (Laser full rig – NSSC) never made it round this first lap but continued ‘free sailing’.
Lap 2 saw Ed.t gain the lead
from Duncan- by 12 seconds whilst there were no place changes back in the fleet
– that is not to say there was no opening up of gaps.
Lap 3 as Ed.T stayed
ahead of Duncan, Thomas H.S also stayed ahead of Zoe and Sean whilst Alan
overtook Ed.R but positions behind remained as in lap 2.
Lap 4 and there was change
at the top with Duncan now leading Ed.T, although it was not to last. Again
there were no place changes in the following fleet.
Lap 5 saw Ed.T cross the
line in first place 12 seconds ahead of Duncan, which shows the intensity of
their on the water squabble. Next came Thomas H-S ahead of Sean who finally got
in front of Zoe. Behind them were Alan 6th, Ed.R 7th, Geoff
8th and Bill 9th. The two Toppers had finished at the end
of lap 4.
With handicaps applied and
calculations made the winner of the race was Thomas Harland Smith, Ed
Rollestone 2nd, Duncan McDonald 3rd, Zoe McCaig 4th
and Sean Beevers 5th.
Results

Race 12 was to be
held over the same course as race 11 and Julian started the sequence only to
abandon it as most of the sailors were yet to get afloat At the second attempt all went to plan – except that
Bett’s camera ran out of puff/battery and the spare was back in the car at
the other end of the south bank. Consequently this report will start with the
positions at the end of the first lap which saw Ed.T leading Duncan by 9
seconds with Sean in 3rd place, Alan 4th, Thomas H-S 5th,
Zoe 6th, Ed.R 7th, Bill 8th, Geoff 9thand
Thomas.B 10th. Tim did not participate in this race and Darrel did
not finish the lap – but stayed afloat.
Lap 2 saw Duncan go
ahead of Ed.T by 7 seconds with Sean 3rd 24 seconds further back and
Alan behind him, followed by Thomas.H-S, Zoe, and Ed.R. Geoff went ahead of
Bill and Thomas.B remained in 10th and last place.
Lap 3 and Duncan still
held off Ed.T, by 10 seconds with Sean 3rd and a minute further back and half minute in front of Alan. Thomas H-S remained
in 5th place ahead of Zoe with Geoff going in front of Ed.R to lie 7th.
Bill remained behind Ed.R but ahead of Thomas.B.
Lap 4 and Ed.T was
right behind Duncan by 2 seconds with Sean now a minute and 19seconds behind and Alan 14
seconds behind him. There were no place changes down the fleet.
Lap 5 , the final lap
had Duncan taking the gun with Ed.T 4 seconds behind. Sean was 3rd 22
seconds ahead of Alan with the order behind unchanged from laps 3 and 4.
With handicaps
applied the winner of the race was Duncan with Thomas H-S 2nd, Sean
3rd and Ed.T 4th – as below.

The lighter breeze, not more
than top end force 3, barely allowed the odd plane on the reaching legs but did
allow some close battles to ensue. Only two capsizes were seen to occur and one
of those was caused by a mainsheet snare on the helm's buoyancy jacket. The XC Weather
outlook for next Sunday is about the same strength but from ENE.
