Today’s RO was Rupert Smith, assisted again by Connie Sturt and with Thomas Harland Smith in the safety boat. The course Rupert set was a figure of eight with a gate on the laps after the first one as shown below.
At the gun it was Duncan
McDonald (Streaker – NSSC) who was first away with Ed Rolestone (Laser 4.7 –
NSSC) behind but to leeward and then Ed Thorburn (Finn – NSSC). Bill Waites
(Laser full rig – NSSC) was next with Sean Beevers (Laser full rig – NSSC) next
to go. At the pin end of the line a nice hole opened up allowing Alan Simmons
(DZero – Lancing) to start in clear air and to windward of the rest of the
fleet. Unfortunately although he arrived first at the mark he had forgotten
that it was to be taken to port and when he tacked he was on the outside of a
raft of boats rounding and as a result went almost to the back of the fleet and
a good way behind.
It was a long course,
comparatively, with plenty of windward and off-wind legs with a good bit of
places changing early on in the race. At the end of the first lap the order was
Duncan 1st, Ed.T 2nd, Michael Veale and Mike Rosier (RS
200 – NSSC) 3rd, Ed R 4th, Sean Beevers (Laser – NSSC) 5th,
Lewis Johns (Laser – NSSC) 6th, Alan 7th, Bill 8th,
Julian Dobson (Laser – NSSC) 9th, David Hitchens (Laser _ NSSC) 10th,
Andy Beck (Int Moth – NSSC) 11th and Thomas Beck (Topper – NSSC) 12th
and last on the water.
Lap 2 saw Ed.T edge in front of Duncan with Sean just astern of him. Alan pulled up to lie 4th just ahead of Lewis with Ed.R behind him. Julian rose to 7th place as Michel fell back to 8th and Bill dropped to 9th. The back three, David, Andy and Thomas.B remained in the positions they held in the first lap.
Lap 3 Had Ed.T hold his lead
at the front of the fleet with Duncan just 19 seconds behind but still ahead of
Sean. Ed.R went ahead of Alan into 4th place, then followed Lewis in
6th with Julian behind him. Bill got ahead of Michael to lie 8th
and again no changes among the trailing three boats.
Lap 4 Ed pilled out to lead
Duncan by a minute and 36 seconds with 3rd placed Sean astern and Ed.R
behind him. Lewis went ahead of Alan to lie 5th. Julian remained in 7th
place as Michael moved ahead of Bill. No further changes occurred in the next
three positions but both Andy.B and
Thomas.B finished at the end of the lap.
Lap 5, the final lap, saw Ed.T
cross the line in 1st place followed by Duncan, now two minutes and
some ahead. Alan squeezed up to third place ahead of Sean with Lewis still 5th
and Ed.R dropping back to 6th behind Lewis. Next came Julian and
then Bill who had gone ahead of Michael with David last to finish in10th place.
With the handicaps applied
the winner of race 3 was Ducan McDonald with Ed Rolestone 2nd,
Ed.Thorburn 3rd,Thomas Beck 4th and Sean Beevers 5th.
Results – un-approved. Race

With a wind shift occurring Rupert reset his course for race 4, the Committee Boat was repositioned with the start line from the boat to the mark just off the clubhouse with the windward mark off the middle of the east bank – third mark in the previous course - as below:-
Duncan started by the C.B with
Sean next to go further up the line and then Ed.T nearer to the middle of the line.
Just before the start gun Alan, going back to the non-course side of the line,
hooked up his centre board on the Committee Boat anchor line and came to a
halt. By the time he freed himself and started properly he was next to last across
the line.
Duncan was first to the windward mark with Ed.T 2nd to round and followed by Sean. By the end of lap 1 the order was Sean just 1 second ahead of Duncan, then Ed.T. Lewis was 4th across the line with Ed.R 5th. Michael 6th, Julian 7th, Alan 8th, Bill 9th, Andy 10th, David 11th and Thomas.B 12th
Lap 2 saw Ed.T into the lead
with Duncan astern and Sean in 3rd place. There were no place
changes down the fleet to Bill in 9th but David pulled back one
place to lie 10th ahead of Andy and Thomas.B.
Lap 3 had the top three
boats in the same sequence with Michael getting ahead of Lewis and Ed.R to lie
4th. Next came Ed R in 6th and still ahead of Alan. Bill
gained a place to lie 8th ahead of David whilst Julian dropped back
to lie 10th with Andy and Thomas.B astern.
Lap 5 saw Duncan still ahead
of Ed.T in top spot with no further changes in the order behind him. Not quite
sure where or when but Andy fell out of his Moth.
Lap 6 – the final lap had
Ed.T going back into the lead and crossing the line 28 seconds ahead of Duncan,
Sean was 3rd and Lewis 4th. Alan was 5th as
Michael went ahead of Ed.R. Behind them David overtook Bill to cross in 8and 8th
place. Next came Julian and last, Andy and Thomas having finished at the end of
the previous lap.
With handicaps applied the
winner off the race was Duncan McDonald, with Ed Rolestone 2nd,
Ed.Thorburn 3rd, Thomas Beck 4th and Lewis Johns 5th

Another nice day’s sailing
with slightly stronger breezes than last week – a good force 4 to 5 at times –
cloudy with odd breaks and fairly warm (above average for the time of year).
The Streaker took the honours in both races and the Finn stayed up there but
with the Laser 4.7 in the mix. The forecast for next Sunday looks like more of
the same – at present – watch that space.
PS. After the first Races in the Freeman Iceberg series on Sunday 7th Nov
and when I got home I realised that I had lost my black (Maker not recalled)
Buoyancy Jacket. I don't think my name is in/on it but it has a 'crutch strap'
that Bett added to stop it rising - if in the water. Would anyone finding it
(or having picked it up) please leave it in the changing room on a wall hook by
the men’s shower entry. Thanks in anticipation.
PPS. Several times I have attempted to post Photos (the winter series etc) with a short comment on the 'Home’ page of the NSSC Facebook page. The system seems to have accepted my post but the next time I view the home page they have vanished. There is a catch, because they are still on the web site, you just have to find them. Below the Club Name and heading picture is a line of links/commands - 'Home, About, Photos, Events and More’. The last of these, More, when clicked gives two options, click on the second (Community) and 'Lo and Behold' there they all are. I add this comment as I hope to give notice and the weekly reports (Streaker Ramblings) for the coming 2021 Winter series.
