Overcast Grey sky, not even
a glimpse of blue and barely a whisper of breeze as we left home for Piddinghoe
on Sunday morning. On arrival it was little better with the boats getting
rigged on the bank with their sails hardly fluttering.
Penny Springall was RO
assisted by John Freeman and with David Murley and Sam Briggs in the safety
boat. Penny set a course right around
the pond, as shown below, for the initial race of the Elford NumBum series wih
a committee boat start down towards the Fisherman’s Bay. Fifteen boats went
afloat as a tiny breeze filled in from the south allowing a beat up to the blue
mark off the clubhouse.
At the gun Duncan McDonald
(Streaker) was first away at the pin end of the line, with Lewis Johns (Laser
Radial) next to cross the line. Alan Simmons (Streaker) was third across the
line a bit further towards the Committee boat and then came Thomas
Harland-Smith (Laser Radial), Roger McCall (Laser full Rig) and Rupert Smith
(Streaker). At the committee boat end of the line Laurence Venus (Hadron H2)
led Michael Veale and Mike Rosier (RS 200) over the line.
It was not too long
before Alan tacked off to the west just ahead of Laurence and these two picked
up a beneficial lift to arrive at the blue mark in the corner off the clubhouse
along-side Rupert with Duncan below him
- and unable to make the mark without a tack. Rupert was also on the low
side having top pinch and permitting Alan to round first and set off down the
run towards the south east corner mark.
Behind the leading four there was a gaggle of boats all arriving at the mark at almost the same time - a few shouts for water were heard!
Alan held on to round this corner mark
ahead of Laurence, who had now passed Rupert, and who then passed Alan along
the following reach.
The breeze was light, patchy in strength and variable in direction allowing Alan to get back into the lead in the ensuing beat back to the club turning mark with Rupert also finishing the lap ahead of Laurence. Roger was fourth to cross the line with Thomas fifth.
At some point in the lap
Duncan caught a mark with his mainsheet and whilst freeing himself he manged
to get the end of his mainsheet down his
bailer. With an open bailer and no forward motion he took on a good bit of Pond
content and ended his lap, after final recovery, in eleventh place.
See the table below for boat positions in each lap – the commentary continues thereafter.

In Lap 2 on the run down the
south bank Rupert went ahead of Alan, and along the east shore reach Laurence
passed him too. Rupert managed to hold off Laurence to cross the line in the
lead with Alan holding on to third place with Roger and Thomas still behind.
Duncan made one place back to lie 10th.
Lap 3 saw Laurence overtake
Rupert and stretch away a little to cross the line 15 seconds ahead with Alan a
further 37 seconds astern. Duncan moved up to seventh place astern of Zoe McCaig
(Laser Radial) with a few more tussles in the middle and back of the fleet.
Lap 4 and the order of the
leading four remained unchanged with Zoe dropping two places to eighth and
Duncan up to sixth. The two Beck children, Thomas (Topper 4.2) and Elena (Oppie)
finished at the end of this lap with Thomas a minute and a half ahead of his
sister.
Lap 5 and still no place
changes in the leading four but with Duncan now up to fifth, astern of Roger,
passing Thomas on the way and demoting him to sixth on the water. Michael and
Geoff Sheridan (Byte CII) were consistently changing places each lap with Geoff
holding ninth across the line.
Lap 6 contested by the top
front boats meant that Laurence crossed the line first well ahead of Rupert with Alan 47 seconds behind him, Roger was
fourth home and Duncan fifth.
After the Times were
corrected and Handicaps applied the race winner was Rupert with Laurence
second, Alan third, Roger fourth and Duncan fifth – as below:-

First across the line at the start gun was Duncan with Thomas. H-S from the bank end, then Rupert with Roger next nearer to the bank, with Alan going right up close to the bank before tacking off towards the clubhouse as Michael opted to cross at the pin end of the line.
Laurence got himself into irons trying to tack onto port
and struggled to get going until after the entire fleet had started.
Duncan was
first to round the mark at the clubhouse followed by Thomas.H-S with Alan just
behind but ahead of Rupert and Roger astern of him. By the end of the lap
Duncan was in the lead with Rupert next having passed Thomas and Alan on the reach
across the west shore to the mark at the Fisherman’s Bay.
Alan went ahead of Thomas
on the beat back up the south bank with Zoe crossing in fifth place ahead of
Roger. Laurence had, by the end of the lap, made his way up to seventh place
behind Roger with Lewis behind him and Penelope Duncan (Laser Radial) behind him but ahead of David Hitchens (Laser
full rig). Geoff was eleventh ahead of Michael and Richard Beal (Laser Radial)
with the Topper and Oppie bringing up the tail end.

Lap 2 saw Thomas and Laurence pass Alan and David climb
up ahead of Penelope as Lewis dropped back to lie tenth and Michael went up to
ninth.
Lap 3 saw Laurence climb up past Rupert and Thomas to lie
second, still well behind the leader Duncan. Alan remained in fifth
place ahead of Zoe, Roger and David with Michael behind him.
Lewis decided to
take a swim on the reach along the west shore which dropped him even further
down the fleet to lie thirteenth ahead of Thomas.B and Elena.B.
Lap 4 and the order
at the front of the fleet remained Duncan
in the lead with Laurence second, Rupert third, Thomas fourth and Alan fifth.
Astern of Alan, Zoe and Roger continued to battle it out for 6th
place.
The order further back in the fleet remained unchanged from that in lap
3 and in fact remained thus into laps 5 except that Michael finally went ahead of David.
Lap 6 – with the
front 11 boats contesting the lap. Alan
went ahead of Thomas on the final beat up the south shore, to cross the finish
line just seven seconds ahead, as David won back his position ahead of Michael.
Laurence was unable to make up the deficit to finish second 57 seconds adrift
with Rupert another 14 seconds behind him.
With Handicaps
applied, and corrected times calculated, the winner was Duncan with Rupert second, Thomas third ,
Alan fourth and Zoe fifth as below:-

The breeze for the two races was light and fickle in strength
and direction testing everyone’s concentration and skills. The sky did break
into Blue skies only to come up with some horrendously black clouds and finally
rain when everyone was packing their boats away.
