Streaker Ramblings - NumBum Races 13 & 14 - 17.02.2019

Blue skies, disturbed only by the Airline Vapour trails criss-crossing it, and a gentle breeze from a southerly direction on leaving Hove for Piddinghoe. On arrival it was much the same although the breeze was close to force 3 and was to increase slowly throughout the racing.

Richard Beal as RO, assisted by Lucy McCaig and with Dave Murley and Andy Hamilton in the safety boat, set an ‘m’ shaped (almost) course with an initial short beat to the mark in the south west corner, off the clubhouse followed by a run across to the east side of the pond (Mark No 2). This was followed by a beat back towards the middle of the south shore (Mark 3) then after a gybe, for some, a close reach to mark 4 in the south east corner. The leg to mark 4 behind the island was a run but on the opposite tack, then a hardening up to mark 6, well out but off the Fisherman’s bay, and a single leg beat back to the finish line – all as shown below.

At the start which was on a rather biased line the first boat away was  Ed Thorburn (Finn, NSSC) from near the ODM but on port tack with Laurence Venus (Streaker, NSSC) next off the line, on Starboard, from near the middle. Third away was Jo West (Radial, NSSC) from the land end of the line. The rest of the fleet was very much bunched up with numerous calls for water - and ‘Starboard’  - at Mark 1.

Down the next leg Ed.T led Laurence with Roger McCall (Laser full rig, Pevensey) alongside Jo.

Alan Simmons (Streaker, Lancing) and Rupert Smith (Streaker, NSSC) were both well back in the fleet, Rupert the more so. The second Beat, Marks 2 to 3  sorted out the order a bit more and there were a few place changes on the leg behind the Island – Marks 4 to 5.

By the line at the end of the first lap the order was Ed.T first, Laurence second Jo third and Sean Beavor (Laser full rig) fourth. Zoe McCaig (Radial,NSSC) held fifth place with Thomas Harland-Smith (Radial, NSSC) sixth, Roger seventh, Michael Veale and Mike Rosier (RS200, NSSC) eighth, Alan ninth, Penelope Duncan (Radial, NSSC) tenth, Rupert eleventh, Bill Wates (Radial, NSSC) twelfth, Terry Jones (Comet, NSSC) thirteenth and Julian Dobson (Laser full rig, NSSC) fourteenth. The next two places were held by RS Visions (Plumpton College) with Harry Hook and Calum Henson in fifteenth, Hugo Heaney and Max Martin in sixteenth. Bea West (Oppy, NSSC) was seventeeth with Katie Trollope and Erica Bottrill (RS Vision, Plumpton) eighteenth and Ewan Hamilton (Oppy, NSSC) nineteenth.

Lap 2 saw Ed.T drawing away from Laurence as Zoe went up to third passing Jo, Sean and Roger on the way. Thomas retained sixth place now ahead of Sean  and with Michael and Alan next up. Rupert closed in on Alan with Julian climbing up to eleventh behind him and now in front of Penelope. Bill manged to miss out a mark on this and the subsequent two laps effectively retiring from the race. Terry remained thirteenth as Harry and Hugo moved up to fourteenth and fifteenth. Bea remained ahead of Katie with Ewan still in last place on the water.

Lap 3 and no changes in the front pair but Roger went ahead of Zoe to lie third while Jo dropped down to seventh behind Sean and Thomas. Alan overtook Michael  - and Rupert remained tenth ahead of Julian with the next four places unchanged. Katie edged ahead of Bea to lie sixteenth with Ewan in eighteenth.

Lap 4 had no place changes in the leading five as Thomas took a dip and dropped back to ninth and Rupert went ahead of Alan in eighth place. Michael also lost a place to lie astern of Thomas. Julian and Penelope remained eleventh and twelfth ahead of  Harry who had been passed by Hugo as Terry dropped back astern of

Harry. Katie, and Bea remained in their relative places as in the previous lap Ewan having already been finished.

Lap 5 and Ed.T was drawing away from Laurence with Roger still third but a good way back. Zoe and Sean held their positions but Rupert gained a place as Jo dropped astern of Thomas and Alan with Michael astern of her. And Julian and Penelope behind him. Harry went ahead of Hugo to lie fourteenth. Terry, Katie and Bea having already been finished.

Lap 6 was sailed only by Ed.T and Laurence with Ed.T crossing the line about two and a half minutes ahead.

With Handicaps applied the result was a win for Laurence with Ed.T second, Zoe third, Bea Fourth and Roger fifth.

Race 14 was held over a similar course but with the start held a bit further east, to give a slightly longer initial leg to mark No 1. By then the breeze had steadily increased to a low force 4 at least, and shifted a trifle to the south, but with a few heavy gusts included.

The line was still biased but starting right at the shore end did not pay off even for Jo who was first to cross. Below her Alan swiftly tacked onto starboard just above E.T who was third to go. Rupert was caught close inshore and lost all the breeze whilst Laurence was nearer in still.

Streets were won and lost on this slightly longer first beat but it was Jo who first rounded followed by Laurence and then Alan who were off on the first run. Rupert was fifth to round Mark 1with Ed.T some three places further astern. It had not been quite the ‘huddle’ as rounding Mark 1 in the previous race. By the end of the second beat to Mark 3 Laurence was in the lead with Rupert now ahead of Alan and Jo astern of him.

Thomas had a dip on this leg but he soon recovered as Sean closed in on Jo. Roger was now behind Thomas having had a tangle with the reeds at the start of the race. A small fleet, Thomas, Roger, Penelope, Zoe , Bill and Julian – in that order went down the first run all quite close to one another.

By the end of the first lap the order was Laurence, Ed.T and Alan with Rupert right on the latter’s stern – one second behind. Then it was Jo, Sean and Michael with Thomas astern of Michael.  Penelope was ninth, Roger tenth, Zoe eleventh and Julian twelfth. Next came Bill followed by Terry, Hugo and Katie. Harry and Callum took a spill meaning that they crossed the line seventeenth and just ahead of Bea and Ewan.

Lap 2 saw Ed.T take the lead from Laurence, crossing the line at the end of the lap 20 seconds ahead. Rupert was third around the course having passed Alan and dropping him to fourth. then came Jo, Sean, Michael and Thomas . Roger was up to ninth having got himself in front of Penelope. Zoe was still eleventh with Bill now astern, he having passed Julian with Terry still fourteenth and Hugo fifteenth. Harry was sixteenth, Bea seventeenth and Katie eighteenth, having missed a mark out.

Lap 3 and Ed continued to pull ahead of Laurence and with Rupert closing in on him, now just 18 seconds astern. Alan had a connection with Mark 3 and having done his 360 degree turn was now behind Jo and Sean in sixth place. Thomas went in front of Michael this lap and Roger stayed in ninth place with Zoe behind , she having gone ahead of Penelope. Then came  Bill who was still ahead of Julian by 20 seconds. There were no place changes behind the latter with Ewan bringing up the rear and being finished.

Lap 4 was led by Ed.T with Laurence behind by 38 seconds. Then came Rupert, Jo. Sean, Alan and Michael and Roger with Thomas behind in ninth place having taken another dip .Zoe and Penelope were still tenth and eleventh with Julian now back level with Bill – both timed the same over the line. Terry, Harry, Hugo, Bea and Katie finished their race in that order.

Lap 5 with thirteen boats now still sailing the leader was Ed.T 35 seconds ahead of Laurence with Rupert 24 seconds behind. Jo, Sean, Alan, and Michael were next in unchanged positions Thomas was next  in eighth place having passed Roger. Zoe still tenth with Julian astern, he having overtaken Bill and Penelope, the latter having also dropped back to thirteenth behind Bill.

Lap 6 was completed only by Ed.T, Laurence and Rupert who crossed the line on the same time but with Rupert about two feet astern.

Handicaps applied and Laurence was declared the winner with Rupert second, Jo third, Ed.T fourth and Bea fifth.

Nice Breeze and even warm with clear blue skies – until later in the afternoon – it was even possible, as on Friday, to drive the MX5 with the roof open on the way home. Young Bea West sailed a blinder in her Oppy with a fourth and fifth place in the two races – a sailor to be reckoned with quite soon if she goes on like this – earlier in the series she had a first and second place no less!
