Streaker Ramblings - NumBum Sreies - Races 1 & 2 - 06.01.2019

Grey, overcast , without a break and with no noticeable breeze as I left home for Piddinghoe. On arrival it was no better without a sign of breeze, not even a movement in reeds outside the clubhouse.

Penny Springall was RO for the day with Toby Rollestone as ARO and Bill Wates in the safety boat. The course was set as it had been for New Year’s Day but before any evidence of breeze strength or direction could be observed.

Just before the start a whisper of wind began to come in from a north westerly direction, just enough to allow the eighteen strong fleet to make it to the line which,as on NYD, was set between the corner mark and one laid a bit further offshore and a bit to the north.

The majority of the fleet came into the line on starboard tack, the exception being Jo West (Radial, NSSC) who led away on port tack with Zoe McCaig (Radial, NSSC) just astern and Roger McCall (Laser full rig, Pevensey) below her. Laurence Venus (Streaker, NSSC) was closer to the pin end of the line and managed to find room to tack away from Jonty Freeman and Chloe Marsh (Feva, NSSC) with Ed Thorburn (Finn, NSSC) close behind.  The boats that had headed for the middle of the pond found a few light airs, sufficient to propel them towards the mark just short of the Fisherman’s Bay.

Those who found themselves nearer to the west bank also found a bit of puff and thus it was rather congested around that first mark. The ensuing run spread the fleet out  with Laurence taking over the lead early on. At the end of the lap – which took Laurence 19 minutes – the order behind him was Ed.T in 2nd place, Chris Foster (Laser full rig, Lancing) 3rd, Roger 4th, Richard Beal (Radial, NSSC) 5th, Ed Rollestone (Laser 4.7,NSSC) 6th, Jo 7th, Penelope Duncan (Radial, NSSC) 8th, Julian Dobson (Laser full rig)9th, Alan Simmons (Streaker, Lancing) 10th, Dave Murley (Radial, NSSC) 11th, Andy Hamilton (Laser full rig, NSSC)12th Jonty 13th, Zoe 14th, Thomas Harland-Smith (Radial, NSSC) 15tyh, Terry Jones (Comet, NSSC) 16th, Bea West (Oppy, NSSC) 17th and Ewan Hamilton (Oppy, NSSC) 18th.

The breeze barely increased for the second lap which saw Laurence cross the line , to finish the shortened course, in first place 1 minute 17 seconds ahead of second placed Ed.T. Chris remained in third place with Roger behind in fourth. Julian made great strides to cross in 5th place ahead of Richard with Alan 7th behind him. Jo was just astern of Alan in eighth place but ahead of Ed.R in ninth.  Andy.H gained two places to lie 10th ahead of Dave and Zoe with Jonty remaining in 13th place. Penelope had lost six places and crossed the line 14th with Terry behind her. Thomas.H did not finish and the two Oppies finished at the end of the first lap.

With handicaps applied and the results calculated the winner was Laurence with Ed.T second, Chris third, Roger fourth and Ed.R 5th.

The second race was held over the same course as a little breeze began to settle in from the same north westerly direction.

Laurence was first away at the shore end of the line with Jo to weather but a triffle behind. Third away at the other end of the line was Chris with Richard below him and Ed.R to windward but behind. It appears that Laurence had chosen the wrong end of the line as Chris crossed the fleet on starboard with Ed.T a bit further out but again due to clear the rest of the fleet on the way to the mark off the Fisherman’s Bay.

By the end of the run across to the mark in the south east corner Laurence was up to fifth place behind Jonty and by the end of the lap was in third place behind the leader Ed.T and Chris. Roger was in fourth place  with Julian behind him, then Richard sixth and Alan seventh. Jo was in eighth place with Zoe 12 seconds behind her and Andy.H 10th behind the two girls. Dave was in 11th place ahead of Terry with Jonty having fallen back to cross the line in 13th. Ed.R was 14th, Penelope 15th, Thomas.H 16th, Bea, 17th and Ewan 18th.

Lap 2 and Ed.T retained his lead with Laurence closing in on Chris, now just 18 seconds behind. Roger held 4th place as Julian held 5th Alan went ahead of Richard to lie 6th as Richard dropped back to lie 11th. Astern of Dave,  Andy.H  went up to 7th passing Jo and Zoe as Zoe also sneaked past Jo to lie 8th. Jonty held on to 12th place ahead of Thomas.H as Terry dropped back to 14th.Ed.R also lost a place but remained ahead of 16th placed Penelope and Bea stayed ahead of Ewan.

Lap 3 and with Ed.T still out in front Laurence went ahead of Chis who stayed ahead of 4th placed Roger. Alan went up to 5th place as Julian ‘lost it’ and dropped back to 8th place. Zoe went up to 6th place passing Andy.H on the way. Thomas.H made great gains going up to lie 9th passing Dave, Richard and Jonty. Ed.R also went back ahead of Terry to13th lie. Terry, Jonty, Ed.R and  Penelope finished at the end of this lap but Jo did not complete the lap.
Bea and Ewan finished their 16th and 17th position as

Lap 6, the final lap had eleven boats still competing. Laurence was unable to catch Ed.T at the finish, he was still 59 seconds behind. Chris was third to cross with Roger 4th and Alan 5th – 20 seconds behind. Then came Zoe, Andy.H and Julian at 8th. Dave had overtaken Thomas.H as had Richard.

With the results calculated the winner was Laurence once again with Bea in second place, Chris third, Ed.T fourth and Alan fifth.

The first race was a bit of a disaster for most of the fleet but some had all the luck and caught the zyphrs. The second race was a little better with just enough breeze to keep everyone moving. At the moment the outlook for next Sunday is a bit heavier  at 20 to 21 knots – but things can change so quickly I always say go to the pond and check how it tis there.

Alan.S 1700
Thanks once again to Mary Harland for taking the phots used in this report - and others which will doubtless appear in the NSSC clubhouse in due course.

PS. The results tables shown in my blog are (unofficial) as calculated by me, using 'Sailwave' but the official results will appear in due course on the NSSC web site.
