Streaker Ramblings - Freeman Iceberg Races 15 & 16 - 23.12.2018

On arrival at Piddinghoe there was a light breeze from the south, south west under grey but dry skies. A fleet of 13 boats was soon on the water to sail the figure of eight course set by R.O. Zoe McCaig (Laser Radial, NSSC) assisted by Tim Cox (Laser Radial, NSSC) with Bill Wates (Laser Radial, NSSC) and crew Sandi Paupish in the safety boat.

With the first leg a short beat to the mark in the south west corner of the pond the line was quite congested at the gun for race 15 of the Iceberg series. The breeze had by then settles to a good force 3 with the odd puff in the lower force 4 range. As the gun went Duncan McDonald (Streaker, NSSC) was a good bit previous, well over the line and having to return. At the shore end Alan Simmons (Streaker, Lancing) was officially first away with Rupert Smith (Streaker, NSSC) next and Jonty Freeman (Laser Radial) third away.

After that first short leg Rupert rounded the mark in the lead with Jonty close behind and Matt Springall  (Laser full rig, NSSC) behind him. Alan was on the outside and saw several other boats round inside ahead of him.

By the end of the ensuing run and onto the close reach behind the Island Alan had been passed by Ed Thorburn (Finn, NSSC), Lucy McCaig (Laser Radial, NSSC) and the re-started Duncan.

By the end of the lap Jonty was in the lead from Rupert by 8 seconds with Matt behind them and Ed.T in 4th place. Duncan was 5th, Alan 6th and Lucy 7th. Ed Rollestone (Laser 4.7, NSSC) was close behind in 8th place ahead of Thomas Harland Smith (Laser Radial, NSSC) 9th, Dave Murley (Laser Radial, NSSC) 10th and Mike Rosier (Laser Radial) 11th - who had almost missed the start, he was so late - Penelope Duncan (Laser Radial, NSSC)12th  with Ewan Hamilton (Opp, NSSC) bringing up the rear in 13th.

Lap 2 saw Matt move up to take the lead from Jonty, by 9 seconds, with Rupert  back to 3rd place. There were no place changes at all in the rest of the fleet.

Lap 3 had Matt still holding the lead from Jonty with Ed.T moving up to lie 3rd with Duncan also passing Rupert who now dropped back to 5th place. Alan stayed in 6th place with Lucy, Ed.R and Thomas still 9th all behind him. Mike passed Dave to lie 10th with Penelope and Ewan behind them.

Lap 4 saw the top 6 places unchanged but Ed.R and Thomas both went ahead of Lucy with Mike retaining 10th ahead of Dave, Penelope and Ewan.

Lap 5 and the top seven places remained unchanged but Lucy fell back behind Mike and Dave to lie 11th in front of Penelope and Ewan – who finished his race here.

Lap 6 Matt led Jonty by 17 seconds across the line but there were no place changes from lap 5 and it was only the leading five who went on to sail the following lap.

Lap 7 had Matt first across the line 26 seconds ahead of Jonty with Ed.T 3rd, Duncan 4th and Rupert 5th. With handicaps applied the winner was Jonty with Matt second Duncan 3rd and Rupert 4th.

Race 16 was sailed over the same basic course, with the breeze at about the same level, but in the reverse direction with a ‘running’ start.

Duncan decided to sail towards the pin end on starboard tack and probably was the first away but continued towards the centre of the pond whilst everyone else went off on port tack meaning that there was a bit of a crush at the pin end mark. Jonty was ‘second’ away in mid line with Ed.R just to windward but a little behind. The fleet remained bunched up on the run towards the mark off the Fisherman’s Bay but with Jonty just clear of Duncan and Ed.T lying 3rd.

At the end of the lap the order was Jonty first ahead of Duncan with Ed.T 3rd, Rupert 4th, Mike 5th, Penelope 6th, Dave 7th and Alan 8th. Matt was back in 9th place having tangled with Alan soon after the gun had gone and had to do turns. Notwithstanding this penalty he decided to capsize, almost on top of Alan, along the reaching leg to the mark in the south east corner of the pond. Thomas.H was in 10th place with Ed.R behind him and Then Lucy and lastly Ewan.

Lap 2 saw no changes in the front six but with Matt now going ahead of Dave and Alan to lie 7th. With Thomas still astern of Alan Lucy passed Ed.R to lie 11th with Ewan still 13th.

Lap 3 no changes in the top five boat’s positions saw Matt go up to lie 6th and Dave to 7th passing Penelope. Thomas went ahead of Alan to lie 9th with Ed.R getting back ahead of Lucy.

Lap 4 still led by Jonty saw Ed.T go ahead of Duncan to lie 2nd.and Matt to pass Mike to lie 5th astern of Rupert. Dave remained in 7th place as Thomas passed Penelope as did Ed.R and Alan slid further back to lie 12th behind Lucy with Ewan finishing this lap.

Lap 5 Jonty led with Duncan back in front of Ed.T with Rupert still 4th. Matt, Mike, Dave, Thomas and Ed.R retained their relative positions but Alan pulled up a couple of places to lie 10th ahead of Penelope, and Lucy.

Lap 6 and no places changes among the leading 8 boats. Alan went ahead of Ed.R with Penelope and Lucy behind them. All but the top five boats finished at the end of this lap.

Lap 7 and Jonty took the gun by 15 seconds from Duncan with Ed.T 3rd some 60 seconds further back. Rupert was still 4th ahead of Matt.

With the results calculated the winner was, once more, Jonty with Duncan in second place, Rupert third and Matt fourth.

A good mornings racing, not too little breeze nor too much to be testing. A good sized fleet at thirteen boats and now only Boxing Day’s race and the series prize giving to come.

Alan S 1700

Thanks again to Mary Harland who took the photos used in this report.
