Freeman Iceberg, Piddinghoe - Races 1 & 2 - 04.11.2018

The forecast for the day was for 16 to 17 knots at Piddinghoe on this the first of the 2018 Freeman Iceberg series races. As it happened the wind was not as strong as that but it came from the south and thus a course was set with a start from the Children’s hut jetty with a very short first leg to the mark in the south west corner of the pond, off the clubhouse.

With a fleet on the water some 21 boats strong the start line was shown to be a bit on the short side although, to RO Ian Lambert’s relief, no one was over at the gun. At the corner mark there was a fair bit of congestion with those who started near the shore coming across on starboard. It was however Rupert Smith (Streaker, NSSC) who led Jonty Freeman (Laser Radial, NSSC) down the following reach. Duncan McDonald (Streaker, NSSC) was next along this leg with Thomas Harland-Smith (Laser full rig) lying fourth and Mike Rosier (Laser Radial, NSSC) fifth.

By the end of the first lap the above order was maintained with Alan Simmons (Streaker, Lancing) 6th,Chris Turner (Laser Radial, NSSC) 7th, Ed Thorburn (Finn, NSSC) 8th, Dave Hitchins (Laser Radial, NSSC) 9th, Zoe McCaig (Laser Radial) 10th, Penelope Duncan (Laser Radial) 11th, Jazz Turner and Bea Cameron (Feva, NSSC) 12th, Andy Beck (Laser Radial, NSSC) 13th, Brandon Rudd and Lewis Johns (Laser II, NSSC) 14th, Stephen Hamilton (Pico Sport, NSSC) 15th, Terry Francis (Comet, NSSC) 16th, Richard Beal (Laser Radial) 17th, Ed Rollestone (Topper, NSSC) 18th, Bill Waites (Laser Radial,NSSC) 19th, Katie Trollope (Topper, NSSC) 20th and Thomas Beck (Optimist, NSSC) 21st.

Without a true beat in the course, the leg from the Fisherman’s bay mark to the finish being the nearest, there was not a great deal of opportunity to overtake. Most boats made this leg on a single tack.

Lap 2. saw the top pair unchanged but Thomas.H went ahead of Duncan briefly whilst there was quite a bit of place changing in mid fleet with Ed.T up one place, Chris up two, Dave up one and Alan down three. It got a bit crowded on the run to the mark off the north of the island and if you could not get the inside berth, then you were ‘stuffed’. Jazz lost three places when, a bit low on the leg to the mark off the fisherman’s bay, she hit the ‘old (submerged) Islands’ and came to a very quick stop.

Lap 3. saw Jonty drop back to leave Rupert just ahead of Duncan who went ahead of Thomas.H. A bit further down the order Ed.T gained two places to lie 5th ahead of Chris, Mike and Alan. Dave dropped a place to lie9th, ahead of a consistant 10th placed Zoe. Andy reeled in Ed.R  to lie 11th whilst Penelope remained in 13th ahead of Brandon and Lewis. Bill gained two places getting in front of Terry and Richard. Stephen, Katie and Thomas.B brought up the tail of the fleet.

Lap 4. had Duncan getting just ahead of Rupert (by 1 second at the line) with Thomas.H regaining 3rd place. Jonty dropped back behind 4th placed Chris and Jonty dropped behind Chris but ahead of Ed.T. Zoe went ahead of Dave to lie 9th behind Alan. There were no places changes further back in the fleet.

Lap 5. saw Rupert regain the fleet lead ahead of Duncan and Ed.T moved up to 3rd place

ahead of Thomas.H. Chris fell back to 6th place in front of Mike who led Alan, Zoe, Dave  and Andy. Richard made great gains to go ahead of Ed.R to lie12thhaving also passed Penelope and Brandon. There were no place changes behind this group.

Lap 6. and Rupert continued to hold the lead inspite of the attentions of Duncan crossing the line 12 seconds ahead. Thomas passed Ed.T to regain 3rd place and Penelope went ahead of Ed.R  to lie 12th as Richard tumbled back to 18th behind Terry. Katie seems to have retired and did not participate in the second race.

Lap 7. and Ed.T, with the fastest rated boat afloat, eventually took the lead from Rupert, Duncan and Thomas. Jonty in 5th place was ahead of Chris,Mike, Alan and Zoe. Dave held on to 10th Place in front of Andy, Penelope, Ed.R, Brandon, Bill and Terry. Jazz dropped back 18th ahead of Richard, Stephen an Thomas.B

Lap 8. had Rupert regaining the lead as he and Duncan went ahead of Ed.T. With Thomas.H retaining 4th place, Jonty was next in line ahead of Chris, Alan, Mike and Zoe. Dave held on to 10th place ahead of Andy and Penelope. Brandon went up to 13th ahead of Ed.R and Bill, Terry and Richard with Jazz 18th in front of Stephen, Thomas. B having finshed at the end of the previous lap.

Lap 9. saw no places changes in the top 12 boats with Bill gaining two to lie 13th ahead of Brandon, Ed.R, Jazz, Terry, Richard and Stephen.

Lap 10. and there were no changes in the top 14 places with Rupert still leading Duncan and Ed.T. Terry went up to lie 15th ahead of Ed.R, Jazz, Richard and Stephen.

Lap 11. the final lap and Rupert retained his lead to cross the line 12 seconds ahead of Duncan with Ed.T 9 seconds behind Duncan. Thomas.H crossed the line 4th, ahead of Jonty 5th, with Chris 6th. Of the remaining 10 boats sailing this lap Alan was 7th, Mike 8th, Zoe 9th and Dave 10th.

With the handicaps applied and results calculated the winner was Rupert with Duncan in second place and Jonty 3rd. Ed.R was next and Chris behind him.

After a break, for coffee and some light ‘relief’ race two started over the same course. This time Jonty was first off the mark, round the ‘windward’ mark and off on the first close reach down the south side of the pond. Duncan, Rupert and Chris were next away and crossed the line at the end of the lap in that order. Of the rest of the fleet  Penelope was in 5th position, Thomas.H 6th, Phil Clare (Wayfarer, s/handed, NSSC) 7th, Ed.T 8th,Alan 9th, Richard 10th, Zoe 11th, Jazz 12th, Mike 13th, Terry 14th, Dave 15th, Bill, 16th, Stephen 17th,Brandon 18th, Ed.R  19th and lastly Thomas in his Oppy 20th.

Lap 2. had the first four positions unchanged with Jonty still in the lead. Thomas.H passed Penelope to lie 5th with Phil dropping back to lie 10th as Ed took his former place followed by Alan and Zoe in 8th and 9th.Richard also dropped back a place leaving Jazz still 12th.Bill went ahead of Terry and Dave to lie 14th.Stephen dropped to19th astern of Ed.R and Brandon.

Lap 3. and the order of the first five boats remained unchanged with Jonty still in front. Ed.T passed Penelope to lie 6th and Richard went ahead of Phil, to lie 10th, as the latter dropped back to 17th. Jazz also passed phil to lie 11th ahead of Mike, Bill, Terry and Ed.R. There were no further place changes.

Lap 4. and Ed.T passed Thomas.H to lie 5th whilst the first four placings did not change. Alan and Zoe passed Penelope whilst she was taking a dip - most spectacular ‘over the side’ job up the windward leg. Bill overtook Jazz for 11th place and Phill made a small comeback passing Terry and Ed.R. Brandon remained ahead of Stephen and Thomas.B

Lap 5. as Jonty continued to edge away from Duncan crossing the line at the end of the lap some 12 seconds ahead - the lead was 11 seconds in the previous lap with Chris next and then Rupert. Thomas snatched back 5th place as he passed Ed.T. There were no place changes in the order thereafter.

Lap 6. Jonty pulled away a little – now 23seconds ahead – from Duncan. Places remained the same down to Stephen, Thomas.B having been finished at the end of the previous lap.

Lap 7. Duncan made a tiny gain crossing the line now 18 seconds behind Jonty with Chris still in 3rd place  ahead of an unchanged fleet except for Terry  who dropped astern of Brandon and Ed.R.

Lap 8. Jonty still held the lead at the end of the lap back to 22 seconds in front of Duncan who was still ahead of Chris. Rupert followed in 4th place ahead of Ed.T who had passed Thomas.H once more. There were no place changes from 7th placed Alan to 15th placed Phil but Ed.R went ahead of Brandon to lie 16th.

Lap 9. The gap between the leader Jonty and second placed Duncan was unchanged this time around at 22 seconds and no other positional changes down to 10th placed Richard. Dave gained a couple of places to lie 11th ahead of Mike, Jazz and Phil with Bill finishing in 15th place ahead of Ed,R, Brandon and Terry behind.

Lap 10. The final lap with 9 boats still sailing and it was Jonty first across the finish line 35 seconds in front of second placed Duncan with Rupert third to cross. Ed.T took 4th,, both he and Rupert having overtaken Chris  - just. Thomas.H was 6th, Alan 7th, Zoe 8th, Penelope 9th

With the handicaps applied an times corrected the winner was Jonty Freeman with Ed.R second, Duncan 3rd, Chris 4th and Rupert 5th.
