Grey Skies with the
sun trying to break through – but failing, not much breeze as I left home but a
good bit more on arrival at Piddinghoe – top end force 3 with gusts near to
force 5 from the north east.
The RO, Jo West
assisted by Sarah Harrison, with Barry Lowdon and Dave Itchens in the safety
boat, set the same course as last week with a bit of adjustment to the location
of the windward mark northwest of the Island.
At the start Jonty
freeman was a bit too keen and was over the line as the gun went and had to
return. As a result it was Chris Foster (Laser full rig, Lancing) first to
cross having tacked onto starboard close by the south bank. In the middle of
the line Thomas Harland-Smith (Radial, NSSC) just passed ahead as Chris was not
able to get up to full speed but caused Rupert Smith (Streaker, NSSC) to tack
beneath him.
Nearer to the shore Michael Veale (sailing Mike Rosier’s Radial)
was fourth away and on the better tack to make the windward mark. Just behind
this first group Bea West (Oppy, NSSC) was also forced onto starboard tack by
those who had been closer to the bank. It turned out that Thomas.H was also
over the line, or thought he was, as he was seen going back along with Jonty.
It
had been a congested line but there were still a couple of very late starters,
Julian Dobson ( Radial, NSSC), Andy Beck (Radial, NSSC) and Dave Murley
(Radial, NSSC). Down towards the pin end of the line were Alan Simmons
(Streaker, Lancing), Thomas Beck (Oppy, NSSC), Matt Springall (Laser full rig,
NSSC) on one of his rare visits, Sean Beevers (Laser full rig, NSSC) and Ed
Rollestone and Lucy McCaig (Feva, NSSC). At the shore end, but quite late were
Penelope Duncan (Radial,NSSC) and Zoe McCaig (Radial, NSSC).
Without separate Lap
times (other than the last) the writer is unable to comment of place changes
throughout the race but at the final gun Jonty was in the lead ahead of Chris
with Thomas.H 3rd to cross the line and Matt in Fourth. After the
Handicaps had been applied the winner was Jonty, with Bea in second place, Matt
third and Rupert fourth.
With the handicaps
applied Jonty was declared the winner with Bea second and Matt third.

Race 8, starting at 11.40, was held over the
same course with possibly a slight easing in the breeze. First away again and
close to the shore was Chris with Jonty a little further along the line.
A
little behind but close to the bank Zoe got away well with both of the Oppies
with the Feva nearer to the pin. Once more there were several boats well
away from the line at the start, one
seemingly in the reeds near the kid’s
hut on the west bank. Yours truly was well off the line together with Julian
(again), and even Rupert.
At the end of Lap 1 the order was Zoe, Jonty,
Chris and Matt. Behind them came Rupert 5th, Thomas.H 6th, Michael 7th.
Dave was lying 8th ahead of Alan, Penelope, Julian, and Andy. Ed
held 13th place with Bea, Thomas.B and Sean (now out of the reeds)
in 16th and last place.
Lap 2 and Zoe still held Jonty at bay as
Rupert moved up to 3rd place with Thomas.H astern. Chris dropped
down to 5th and Michael moved up one spot to lie6th as Matt dropped
down to 7th. following a capsize on the run along the west bank,
Alan passed Dave to go 8th with Penelope still 10th with Julian
still 11th, Andy 12th, Ed 13th, Bea 14th and
Sean gaining a place to 15th with Thomas.B down to 16th.
Lap 3 saw Jonty take the lead from Zoe with
Chris, having gone ahead of Thomas.H, in 3rd place. Rupert fell back
astern of Thomas.H but still ahead of Michael. Matt also dropped a place to
lie 7th in front of Dave who had gone ahead of Alan, by 4 seconds. Julian gained a place by passing Penelope who
stayed ahead of Andy. Sean moved up the table getting past Ed.
Lap 4 was still led by Jonty with Chris
passing Zoe to lie 2nd as Rupert regained 4th place ahead
of Thomas.H. Matt having recovered from a capsize went ahead of Michael to lie
6th as Alan moved up to 8th.Dave, Julian and Penelope
were 9th, 10th and 11th respectively. Sean
went in front of 13th placed Andy with Ed, Bea and Thomas at the
tail end.
Lap 5 saw the front ten boat positions
unchanged from Lap 4 but with Bea recorded as being in 11th as was
Penelope on the same time. Sean was next to cross the line ahead of Andy,
Thomas.B and lastly Ed – both Bea and Thomas.B being finished.
Lap 6 and again no changes in the front 4
boats with Matt going ahead of Thomas.H to lie 5th ahead of Michael.
Alan crossed the line 8th and was finished. Julian went ahead of Dave to lie 10th, both
being finished. Penelope crossed 11th, Sean 12th. Ed went
ahead of Andy to cross in 13th place ahead of Andy. The latter two
were also finished.
Lap 7, the final lap was therefore sailed by
11 boats with Jonty 1st, Chris 2nd, Zoe 3rd,
Rupert 4th, Matt 5th, Thomas 6th, Michael 7th,
Dave 8th, Sean 9th, Penelope 10th and Andy 11th.
With Handicaps applied Jonty was the winner
again with Zoe 2nd and Bea 3rd.

Thanks go to Mary Harland who took the photos,
with Alan’s camera, having torn herself away from the canteen – Bacon Butties
and coffee – at each of the two race starts.
