Streaker Ramblings - Freeman Iceberg Races 5 & 6 - 19/11/2016

Clear blue skies, just the slightest hint of a breeze as we left Hove for Piddinghoe on Sunday morning, 19th November 2017.On arrival at the pond the car park was full – it was some form of Angling competition as far as one could make out with nearly every spot on the east bank occupied. There was a good turnout of Dinghies , some 20 boats entered for the two races.

The RO, Simon Suter (assisted by Toby Rollestone and with Dave Murley and Andy Beck in the safety boat) had a couple of goes to set up the course as the breeze swung through 30 degrees or so. It eventually settled from the north, north east – approximately from the direction of the Fisherman’s Bay – so that he was able to set a line from close to the north end of the clubhouse, as shown below:-

It was a fairly long line and the entire fleet came in from the direction of the island on starboard tack. Chris Turner (Laser full rig- NSSC) led the pack and was first to tack onto port when about half way along the line. Laurence Venus (Streaker - NSSC) was next to tack off just ahead of Alan Simmons (Streaker – Lancing) who had been forced to stay on starboard until Ian Johnson (Laser Radial) had headed off eastwards. Paul Ryan (Laser full rig – Hardway SC) had also tacked off lower down the line but in clear air.

At the mark off the Fisherman’s Bay it was Laurence who rounded with Chris next then Paul and fourthly Alan. This was the order at the end of the first lap with Noel West (Streaker – NSSC) fifth and Rupert Smith (Streaker –NSSC) sixth. Tiger Cox (Laser Radial – NSSC) was in seventh place with Bill Wates (Laser Radial – NSSC) eighth, Julian Dobson (Laser full rig – NSSC) ninth,  Michael Veale crewed by Mike Rosier (RS 200 – NSSC) tenth. Zoe McCaig (Laser Radial – NSSC) eleventh, Geoff Sheridan (Byte – NSSC) twelfth, Ian Johnson (Laser Radial – NSSC) thirteenth, Lucy McCiag (Laser Radial – NSSC) fourteenth, Ed Rollestone (Oppie – NSSC) fifteenth, Katie (Topper – NSSC) sixteenth, Jazz Turner (Slipper – NSSC) seventeenth, Stephen Hamilton (Otter – NSSC) eighteenth, Thomas Beck (Oppie – NSSC) nineteenth, and Elena Beck (Oppie – NSSC) twentieth.

Lap 2 had Laurence still out in front and pulling away from second placed Paul as Alan went to 3rd place ahead of Chris and Rupert also passed Chris and Noel to lie 4th. Julian went ahead of Tiger and Bill to lie 7th with Michael also gaining two places to lie 8th. There were no other place changes lower down the fleet with Elena bringing up the rear as she and Stephen and Thomas all finished at the end of the lap. Katie failed to finish.

Lap 3 saw Laurence pull further ahead of Paul who in turn stretched the gap from Alan. Julian shot up the fleet to lie 4th and ahead of Rupert as Chris dropped to 8th and Michael slipped in astern of Rupert. Noel dropped back to 7th. Zoe went ahead of Bill to lie 10th with the only change behind them being Jazz moving up to 16th.

Lap 4 Laurence crossed the line 2 minutes ahead of Paul with Alan a minute and a half further back. Julian held off a late challenge from Rupert and Noel re-passed Michael to finish 6th  with Tiger 8th and Bill and Zoe crossing the finish line together as joint ninth. Geoff was next to finish with Chris going back almost to the slipway before he realised he had not finished . Ian was last home13th as Lucy failed to finish.

Race 6 commenced with the start at 11.45 over the same course, with a slight adjustment of the mark off the east shore which was moved a little further behind the Island. At the gun Noel was first to cross in mid line with Laurence a length to windward and Chris half a length to windward of Laurence. Rupert was next away somewhat closer to the clubhouse end of the line. Michael, Paul and Alan made a hash of the start and were the last to get underway with only the Opiies still behind them. The Oppies also made a mess of the start, missing out the outer mark. The race officer manage to get them to re-start properly but that was nearly 4 and a half minutes later that the main fleet – their finishing times were adjusted in the results.

Noel was first to the windward mark off the Fisherman’s Bay just ahead of Laurence but three legs later Laurence took the lead with Chris crossing the line 3rd. Rupert was next to cross the line with Julian just behind in 5th place. Paul, Alan and Zoe all completed the lap on the same finishing time with Michael next ahead of Geoff. Ian crossed the line in 11th place ahead of Bill with Lucy 13th and Stephen 14th.  Next came Stephen, then Jazz and Katie next at 16th . Even with his late start Ed crossed the line in 17th place ahead of the Laser 2 (Plumpton College) with Elena19th and Thomas 20th.

Lap 2 and Laurence continued to lead Noel, opening the gap to about a minute. Rupert went past Chris to lie 3rd with Julian, Paul and Alan in unchanged positions. Michael went to 8th passing Zoe on the way with Geoff next and  Bill passing Ian to lie 11th with just 3 seconds separating them on the line. Katie went up to 14th as she passed Stephen and Jazz. There were no place changes in the last  four boat positions.

Lap 3 had Laurence now 3 minutes ahead of second placed Noel as Rupert fell back a few seconds and Chris dropped behind Paul  lie to 7th as Alan passed him and Paul to lie 5th behind Julian. There were no place changes among Michael, Zoe, Geoff and Bill but Lucy gained a place ahead of Ian to lie 12th. There were no positional changes further down the order except that the Laser 2 moved up to 17th, the Oppies having finished at the end of the previous lap.

Lap 4 had Laurence still well out in the lead, crossing the line some two and a half minutes in front of Rupert who had pulled up past Noel. Paul went ahead of Julian and Alan who in turn passed Julian to finish 5th, there were no place changes behind the first six.

Lap 5 had only Laurence to sail round the pond, having been so far ahead of the competition.

What a contrast from the previous week’s conditions with these  two races just a nice gentle breeze, giving all the chance to compete, not just the big, fit, agile ones. The start lines did get a bit crowded this time but the courses soon sorted out the running orders. There  were some very close battles with multiple boats crossing the finish lines on identical times.

PS. It is with great sadness that we have to report the death, after a long illness, of Darren Field. Darren was a long time member of NSSC and a regular supporter of the Piddinghoe Winter Series Racing – search the NSSC web site for any further information.
