Streaker Ramblings – Elford Numbum Races 3 & 4 – 18.01.2017

Overcast, Grey, Raining and no sign of any wind – not exactly what the forecast (for Piddinghoe) stated – 9 to 17 knots. There was ice on the boat cover, and the tail end of the mainsheet was frozen in the bottom of the boat. The pond also had, it was later discovered, a film of ice in some areas – it looked like breeze on the surface at first glance.

Bill Giles was RO for the race assisted by Chas Humphries and with Dave Murley (and Son?) on safety boat duty. Setting a course was done more in hope than anger as there was not a breath of breeze but a ‘round the outside’ course was set as below, with the first leg from a line at the clubhouse towards the Fisherman’s Bay.

Fourteen boats plus a Windsurfer came to the line but the first start was abandoned as too many boats were over the line at the gun.

The second start, with still no breeze, saw Richard Beal (Laser Radial) edge over the line to windward? of Laurence Venus (Streaker) with Chris Foster and daughter Charlie (Laser 2) third away about midway along the line. Towards the shore end Bill Wates (Laser full rig) was ahead but to weather of Alan Simmons (Steaker) – Alan had been at the other end (correct end) of the line at the original start and now found himself without any breeze at all and in just about last place.

Connie Sturt (Slipper)was seen to be Rowing on this first leg.

Chris.F, Laurence and Michael Veale and Mike Rosier (RS200) found enough air movement to work their way through the ice pack and round the Bay mark ahead of the rest of the fleet.

Alan eventually headed off towards the middle of the pond and on the next leg, towards the mark in the middle of the eastern shore, made up several places to midway in the fleet. By the time he had passed behind the Island and started the leg up the south shore he had just four boats ahead of him, Chris Turner (Laser Radial) also having made up quite a few places on that second leg.

Laurence had passed Chris.F on the leg behind the Island and crossed the line (in the then shortened race) in first place some fifty seconds ahead. Michael crossed ten seconds behind with Chris.T three minutes later with Alan just two seconds astern of him.

With handicaps applied Laurence was the winner, Chris.F second, Michael third and Alan and Chris.T tied at fourth.

By the time the second race was due to start a slight breeze had filled in from the south west corner of the pond. The start was therefore a running start and it was Alan, near the outer end of the line who was first away. Next off was Chris.F closer to the shore end, with Spinnaker flying, and Laurence even nearer to the shore and then Roger McCall (Laser full rig) fourth off.

Chris.F was first around the ‘Bay’ mark with Laurence behind him and Alan third to round. Roger was a few lengths behind the three leaders.

Along the leg behind the Island Laurence had moved past Chris.F and up the beat along the south shore both Alan and Roger also passed him. At the line it was Laurence , Alan and Roger equal second, then Chris.F just one second behind these two with Michael next, yet another second behind, then Chris.T in 6th place. Bill.W was 7th, Julian Dobson (Laser full rig) 8th, Lucy McCaig (Laser Radial) 9th, Penelope Duncan (Laser Radial) 10th, Charlie Rigg (Topper) 11th, Richard Beal (Laser Radila) 12th, Bea Cameron (Laser 4.7) 13th, Jazz Sayed (Windsurfer) 14th and Connie 15th.

Lap 2 saw Roger get away from Alan to lie in second place with Chris.F still 4th. Bill.W closed up behind Chris.F, having passed Michael and Chris.T. Julian at 8th led an unchanged group of Lucy, Penelope, Charlie, Richard , Bea and Jazz.

Lap 3 had Laurence way out ahead, over a minute ahead of Roger with Alan having made no progress on him. Behind him Bill.W took the further scalp of Chris.F to lie 4th with Michael 6th and Julian overtook Chris.T. Positions behind remained unchanged.

Lap 4 and Laurence continued to pull away from Roger crossing the finishing line some minute and a half ahead. Alan meanwhile shortened the gap behind Roger to 30 seconds and Chris.F went back ahead of Bill.W. Michael crossed in 6th place with Julian, Chris.T, Lucy and Penelope lastly., Charlie, Richard, Bea and Jazz having finished at the end of lap 3 and Connie having managed to complete only one lap.
With Handicaps applied Laurence was the winner with Alan second, Roger 3rd, Charlie 4th and Bill.W 5th
