Wrong
again, the forecast said 6 to 9 knots for Seaford, but as we left home there
was not even a whisper. On arrival at Piddinghoe there was little more and not
much more just before the start sequences commenced.
Seniors
Race 11
Once
again Penny Springall was RO for the day assisted by Geoff Sheridan and with
Penelope Duncan helming the safety boat. An ‘X’ configured course was set –
really before any detectable breeze strength or direction had become evident –
as shown below.
At
the gun for the Seniors start of race 11 Laurence Venus (Streaker) was first to
get his bow across the line in the ‘reaching/running’ start. Next off, nearer to
the middle of the line was Jo West (Laser Radial). On the shore side of
Laurence it was Alan Simmons (Streaker) with Dave Murley (Laser Radial) between
him and the bank who were next to go. Out towards the outer limit mark Zoe
McCaig (Laser Radial) found a whisper of breeze and was one of the first away.
Coming from nowhere it was Ed Thorburn (Finn) first to round the ‘windward
mark’ followed shortly by Laurence. Behind this pair came the rest of the fleet
in one vast group with Chris Turner (Laser Radial) leading Zoe and Alan pushed out towards the east bank with
Yves Horent (Laser full rig) just behind.
With
the next leg to a mark off the Fisherman’s Bay and virtually no breeze it was
very much luck as to who would get there first. Ed was first to round and set
off towards the south east corner mark. Laurence was not far behind with Alan
third but a long way behind. The dead run across the pond was also very slow and there was little chance
to make up ground or pass a competitor nor was the final leg of the lap up the
south shore. This last leg, along the south shore, was a beat on a mostly port
tack with just a short starboard tack to the top mark.
At
the end of the lap Ed led Laurence by nearly a minute with Alan three and a half
minutes behind. Yves was two minutes astern and two minutes ahead of Chris. Zoe
was in 6th place with Julian Dobson (Laser full rig) 7th,
Rupert Smith (Streaker) 8th.
Jo
was in 9th place ahead of Terry Jones (Laser full rig) and Bill
Wates (Laser full rig). Tiger Cox (Topper) held 12th position with
Bill Giles (Solution) 13th. Carolyn Turner (Laser Radial) 14th,
Alice Smith - and Jazz Sayed - (Topper)
15th, Dave 16th, Richard Beal (Laser Radial) 17th,
Anne Bush ((Laser Radial) 18th and Natasha Stonestreet (Laser full
rig) 19th.
Lap
one was so slow that only the leading 7 boats took part in lap 2. Laurence
passed Ed to cross the line 57 seconds ahead, turning round the previous lap
deficit. Alan was next home in third place seven minutes behind but still
nearly six minutes ahead of Yves. Chris was 5th home some three
minutes later with Julian eleven seconds
further back, having overtaken Zoe. She was last to finish some twenty seconds
later.
With
Handicaps applied Laurence was the outright winner. Ed was second, Alan third,
Yves fourth and Tiger fifth.

By
the time it was due to commence the starting sequence for race 12, held over
the same course, a little breeze was visible over the vast majority of the
pond’s surface. The direction was however still the same, from the west,
meaning yet another reaching start.
First away towards the shore end of the
line was Chris with Jo further down the line next and Ed towards the pin end
away in clear air. Laurence was in the middle of the line but found some puff.
Ed
and Laurence were first to round the mark near the east shore with Jo, Rupert
and Alan having a battle for third place. It was Jo who came out in the lead of
this group to cross the line third at the end of the lap with Rupert behind her
and Alan behind him. Chris crossed 6th with Yves astern and Bill.W 8th
just ahead of Bill.G. Julian was in tenth place with Zoe behind, then Terry and
Natasha 12th. Tiger was next
followed by Carolyn, Dave, Richard and Connie Sturt (Slipper) with Alice and
Jazz last at 19th.
Lap
2 had Ed still out in front a minute or so ahead of Laurence. The battle for
third place continued and Alan came out the winner as both he and Rupert went
ahead of Jo. Yves got the better of Chris to lie 6th at the end of
the lap. Bill.W held on to 8th place as Zoe gained 9th
place as she passed both Bill.G and Julian. Natasha went up a place passing
Terry to lie 12th. Behind this group Tiger held on to 14th
as Richard went ahead of Carolyn and Dave. This group were finished at the end
of this lap leaving 13 boats to complete the third and final lap.
Lap
three saw Ed cruise across the line nearly two minutes ahead of Laurence with
Alan finishing third, twenty one seconds ahead of Rupert. Yves passed Jo to
finish 5th with Chris still 7th. Bill.G went past Zoe and Bill.W to finish 8th
as Julian stayed 11th and Terry got back past Natasha.
With
the Handicaps applied the result was similar to that for race 11 with Laurence
the winner, Ed second and Alan third. Rupert was fourth and Jo fifth.

Sailed
over the same course, as that for the Seniors, the gun went at 10.35 with Harvey
Jenkins (Oppie) first away at the shore end with Harry Quinn (Oppie) next, with
Charlie Riggs (Topper) close but below him and George Quinn (Oppie) on
Charlie’s leeward side. On the run/reach to the mark on the east side the fleet
was virtually in a line from Harvey in the north to Harry in the south.
The
four Toppers were just about in front of the Oppies. The entire fleet caught up
with the tail-enders from the Seniors fleet with Charlie rounding barely a length
(Topper) clear of Harvey.
There was a big shift in what little breeze was
coming from the west bank with both fleets (Seniors and Cadets) able to tack
almost directly for the mark off the Fisherman’s Bay. By the end of the lap –
the only lap the Cadets sailed in this race - the order of finishing was first
place for Lucy McCaig (Topper), Maddi Quinn (Topper) 2nd, Harvey 3rd,
George 4th, Harry 5th, Roan Briggs (Topper) 6th,
Bea West (Oppie) 7th and Charlie 8th.
With
Handicaps applied Harvey was first, George second, Harry third and Lucy fourth.

As
for the Seniors there was now a little more breeze, except close inshore under
the Clubhouse. As a result the fleet was in a line from the middle of the line
out to the pin end.
With his bow just
about in front Harvey was first away with Bea next and Roan at the pin end
third away.
After rounding the mark off the east shore Lucy was in the lead
with Maddi next followed by Roan and then Charlie. Harvey was again leading
Oppie with Harry next ahead of Bea and with the late starting George bringing
up the rear.
By the end of the first lap Maddi had pulled into the lead with
Charlie next, Roan third and Lucy 4th. Harvey still led the Oppies just
a second astern of Lucy. Harry was in 6th place with Bea next and George
still at the back.
Lap
2 had Charlie overtaking Maddi and with Harvey just 2 seconds behind Maddi at
the finish of the lap (and Race). Roan finished 4th, Lucy 5th,
Harry 6th and Bea 7th. George finished a lap earlier.
With
Handicaps applied Harvey was again the winner with Harry second, Charlie third
and Maddi fourth.
