Cold,
Grey overcast and a bit breezy, as we left home for Piddinghoe on Sunday
morning. On arrival there was almost no wind at the pond, in spite of a
forecast of up to 20 knots (top end force 5) so it was case of getting rigged.
Slowly, however, the breeze began to build and Alan decided to try out the Wave
sail, with its reduced area, as the rigging in the boats on the bank showed
some signs of whistling during the gusts. None the less some 11 boats signed on
although, come the start, Bea West in her Oppie chose not to race.
Jo
west as RO set a simple triangular course, from a line close to the clubhouse,
with short windward leg to a mark in the
south west corner of the pond. There followed a very broad reach/run to a mark
in the South east corner and then a close reach towards the mark, well off the
Fisherman’s Bay. The final leg being a beat back to the mark in the south west
corner.
At
the gun Alan Simmons (Streaker) was first to cross the line with Noel West
(Laser full rig) to windward and a little behind, but with water on the inside
at the mark. Chris
Turner
(Laser Radial), Matt Springall (Laser full rig and Michael Veale and Mike
Rosier (RS200) were nowhere to be seen. On the leg down the south side Alan
went first close to the south bank and then midway down the leg gybed out
towards the middle of the pond.
The following fleet were spread out across the
leg, half on port and half starboard tack. On closing with the southeast corner
mark Chris found the extra speed to round in the lead with Alan next then Bill
Giles (Solution) and then Matt. The RS 200 had not made any real gain in spite
of using their Gennaker. On the next leg both Chris and Alan headed for the
wrong mark and the group behind all passed Alan. Chris, being far enough in
front, tacked back and went on to hold his lead to the line with Matt closing
in second place ahead of Michael in third. Zoe Mcaig (Laser Radial) held fourth
place with Noel in fifth. Next to cross the line was Bill Wates (Laser full
rig) then Alan ahead of Bill.G. Penelope Duncan (Laser Radial) crossed the line
9th in front of Richard Beal (Laser full rig).
Lap
2 saw Michael get to grips with the Gennaker on the off-wind leg and point
higher on the two windward legs. He caught up and passed both Matt and Chris to
take the lead. Noel went up to fourth passing Zoe on the way and Alan got ahead
of Bill.W. The remaining three stayed in their same relative positions.
Lap
3 and it was all change at the front with Matt taking the lead, Chris holding
on to second and Noel taking third dropping Michael back to fourth. Zoe
remained fifth but Bill.G overtook Alan. Bill.W was now eighth with Penelope
and Richard behind him.
Lap
4 had no place changing among the leading four as Bill.G gained another place
passing Zoe to lie fifth and Bill.W went back ahead of Alan.
Lap
5 saw Matt increase his lead ahead of Chris and Noel – presumably suffering a
capsize – fell back to eighth. Michael meanwhile regained third place with
Bill.G also climbing up to lie fourth. Alan continued to lie seventh leading
Penelope, Noel and Richard.
Lap
6 and no change in the lading three as Zoe went up a place as she overtook
Bill.G. There wer no other changes among the rest of the fleet.
Lap
7, the final lap and it was Matt first to cross the finish line 51 second ahead
of Chris with Michael third a minute behind. Zoe was fourth and Bill.W sneaked past Bill.G by seven
seconds to take fifth. Alan finished
seventh and last.
With
the handicaps applied Chris was the winner with Matt second with Zoe third and
Alan Fourth.

Race
4 was started at noon with Alan, now having changed back to full rig, first
across the line but a bit lower than he had hoped as he was a second or too
early. Second away was Chris with Michael to weather and slightly behind. Alan
was soon passed on the short leg to the turning mark, having lost all his wind he
then went in irons, finally getting round the mark at the back of the now nine
boat fleet and in spite of Penelope almost capsizing on the line and then
recovering.
Noel had missed the start after a meeting with the reeds and
decided to call it a day. Michael was first to round the south east mark, just
ahead of Chris but with Matt now close behind. Chris was caught by a gust as he
sailed behind the island and capsized allowing Matt to pass him.
Zoe was fourth
at the end of the first lap with Alan behind her, Richard came next in sixth
and Bill.W seventh. Bill.W capsized near the east side of the pond, went over
again as he first righted the boat and then got the mast stuck in the mud
causing him to lose a lot of time. Penelope did not complete the lap and Bill.G
had had enough with one race leaving just seven boats to complete the race.
Lap
2 saw Matt pass Michael to take the lead with Chris third, with no change in
position for the other remaining boats.
Lap
3 and no change among the front three but Alan managed to pass Zoe to lie fourth
who then was ahead of Richard with Bill.still well back.
Lap
4 and no change at the front once again but Bill.W clawed back ahead of
Richard.
Lap
5 and the order was still Matt, Michael, Chris, Alan, Zoe, Bill.W and Richard.
Lap
6 Matt was in the Lead but Michael, whilst nearly at the end of the downwind
leg along the southern bank was passing (and lapping) Richard when he capsized.
Richard was also taken out by the event as the RS went across his bows. He ended up hanging on to the RS whilst his own boat
blew towards the bank. Both finally recovered their own boats but Richard then
retired. Whilst this was happening Alan briefly went into third place.
Lap
7, the final lap and it was Matt who crossed the finish line in the lead with
Chris behind him. Michael, meanwhile , having recovered from his swim, went
back ahead of Alan on the final beat with Zoe crossing fifth, Bill.W having
been finished at the end of is previous lap.
Once
again the Handicaps having been applied the winner was Chris with Matt second
and Alan third and Zoe Fourth.
