Quite misty as we left home for Piddinghoe this morning with little or no breeze in Hangleton. On arrival at the pond the scene was little better with the Island barely visible from the berthing area. The safety boat was manned by Andy Beck and Jamie Smith and for the first race had no marks tomove or rescues to help with.
Chris Turner, RO for the day and assisted by Paul Vincent, had to wait for quite a while, until a breeze appeared coming in from the north west corner (Fisherman’s Bay area) and then laid a course around the edges of the pond – no twiddly bits – as below. The start line was well angled to try to make it fair for all. As the mist/fog began to clear there was large fleet float, some 22 boats for the main event and four ’Novices’ took to the water. The latter had a separate race starting five minutes before the main event. Due to the large numbers, in the main fleet, the ‘Novices’ race is not reported here.
At the Main Fleet start it paid to tack onto port early and Alan Simmons (Streaker, Lancing SC) – sole visitor - was first away, just past the pin mark. A little behind, but upwind, second to cross was Jo West (Laser full rig,). Third and even further upwind was Noel West (Solo,) with Ed Thorburn (Finn,) nearer the pin end next to go. By the windward mark Alan had a slight lead and rounded ahead of Jo and after gybing puled just clear ahead, a position he was to hold for the rest of race even though he was closely pursued throughout. Without a true beat the laps were a bit of a procession but by the end of lap one the finishing order was 1st Alan,
2nd Jo, 3rd Rupert Smith (in his first outing in his Streaker), 4th Noel, 5th Jonty Freeman (Laser Radial,), 6th Matt Springall (Laser,), 7th Laurence Venus (Streaker,) who had not had a good start getting stuck in a big bunch of boats, 8th Michael Veale and Mike Rosier (RS 200,),9th John Nash (Laser,), 10th Julian Dobson (Laser,), 11th Ed Thorburn, 12th Louise Currell, 13th Bill Wates (Laser), 14th Bill Giles (Solution), 15th Penelope Duncan (Laser Radial), 16th Richard Beel (Laser), 17th Carolyn Turner (Laser Radial), 18th Dave Murley (Laser Radial), 19th Chas Humphries (Laser), 20th
James Cuxson (Laser), 21st Terry Jones (Laser) and 22nd J Co…… (Laser).
Lap 2 and no changes in the front three, but Matt passed Jonty to lie 4th, Ed.T moved up o 9th overtaking John.N and Julian. Carolyn also gained a couple of places to lie 15th ahead of Penelope and Richard. Chas and James passed Dave whilst Terry and
J.C remained in the last two spots.
Lap 3 and the previous lap’s top four stayed ahead as Laurence, Michael and Ed.T all passed Jonty – not quite sure where but there were a few loud calls heard. Bill.G and Bill.W both climbed head of Louise – now lying 14th. Chas and then James.c moved in front of Richard as Penelope ‘crashed’ back behind him. J.C got in front of Terry s Dave dropped back to last place.
Lap 4 saw Alan still leading the fleet but Rupert passing Jo to lie in second place and Laurence passing Matt as Noel dropped two places to lie 6th. The order remained the same for the next with Louise regaining one place from Bill.W to lie 13th behind Bill.G. Carolyn, Chas and James.C stayed 15th, 16th and 17th. Terry shot up to 18th and Richard tumbled back behind Penelope with J.C and Dave in the rear.
Lap 5 and Alan was being closely followed by Rupert and Jo and then Laurence, Matt and Noel. Ed.T moved up to 7th passing Michael on the way as John.N, Julian and Bill.G went ahead of Jonty. Chas and James.C moved up to 15th and 16th passing Carolyn on the way with Penelope out smarting Terry and J.C passing Richard leaving Dave still as last man.
In the last lap there were no positional changes in the first ten placed boats in the previous lap. That is not to say that there were no further challenges with the gap between Jo and Laurence merely 1 second and Noel and Ed just 12 seconds. Jonty managed to pull back one place to finish 11th in front of Louise who had also passed Bill.G. Carolyn regained a place to finish 16th behind Bill.W and Chas as James dropped back to 17th. Penelope at 18th led home Terry and JC whilst Richard and Dave failed to finish. With the handicaps applied it was a clean sweep for the Streakers, Alan 1st, Rupert 2nd and Laurence 3rd, Noel, Jo and Matt were the next three – see the tables below for the full placings.

After a short break during which Chris Turner (RO) went afloat to ‘survey’ the breeze
A decision was made to alter the course slightly to attempt to include a true beat. This was achieved by moving the former windward mark further towards the Fisherman’s bay and using a mark midway along the southern side whilst omitting the turning mark in the south west corner of the pond. The start line was much the same, from the bank near the north end of the clubhouse to the mark north east of that.
Once again the ‘Novices’ were sent off 5 minutes before the main fleet. If anything the breeze was lighter than the force 2 of the first race. This time it paid to start nearer to the shore and Alan was, he thought quite well placed, with only Rupert above him and James.C to leeward and most of the rest of the fleet behind. Unfortunately for him whilst they had to tack to make the mark Alan lost the wind to Rupert and although Rupert made it, Alan did not, and had to give way to several Starboard tack boats. Ed pulled through on the lap to lead the race from Jonty, Laurence and matt. By the end of the lap these four pulled out ahead of the fleet with just 23 seconds between Ed and Matt. Rupert was in fifth place with Noel behind him and Alan in 7th. And Bill.G close behind him. Penelope was lying 9th ahead of Richard and Carolyn with Simon Souter (Topper Argo) single handed in 12th place. Next came James.C then Jo, Michael, Chas and Bill.W. Louise was in 18th place, Julian 19th, Terry 20th, Dave 21st, J.C was 22nd and John .N 23rd and last. This was not really a very representative result and things began to change thereafter.
Lap 2 had Ed.T in the lead from Laurence who had passed Jonty and Noel was now in front of Rupert and Matt – the latter having also been passed by Rupert. Jo had charged through the middle of the fleet and by the end of the lap was lying 6th,ahead of James.C who in turn had passed Alan. Behind Alan Bill.G held 10th, Bill.W 11th and Julian was just ahead of a rising Louise now 13th.Michael rose one place to 14th with Chas just astern. In 16th J.C. held off John.N, Dave and Terry. Simon came next at 20th having fallen well back from his lap one position – the trials of sailing a two man boat single handed ? Richard was also struggling having dropped from 10th to 21st. but with Penelope having an even bigger fall from 9th to 22nd. Carolyn brought up the rear with an near equal fall (from Grace?).
Lap 3 and Ed.t was still out front with Laurence behind but not gaining significantly.
3rd place was taken, at the end of the lap, by Noel who in turn led Jonty by just 2 seconds. Jo was now up to 6th ahead of Bill.G who in turn had passed Alan. Matt had dropped back to 9th with Julian 10th just in front of Louise who had risen from 13th previously. Michael held 12th ahead of James.C. In 14th spot was Bill.W having lost out from11th.John.N was lying 15th having overtaken Chas and J.C. .Terry was 18th, Dave 19th, Richard was up one at 20th having gone ahead of Simon and Carolyn was in front of Penelope.
Lap 4 and Ed.T still held the lead from Laurence but only by 9 seconds. Noel, Jonty , Rupert, Jo and Bill.G also retained their relative positions but Matt passed Alan to leave the latter in 9th place with Julian just 12 seconds astern. Behind them came Louise, Michael, James.C, Bill.W etc through to Terry, all as in their previous lap positions. Richard had clawed back a place having passed Dave to lie 19th with Carolyn 21st and Simon 22nd. Penelope had had enough and did not complete that lap.
Lap 5 – the last full lap – saw no positional changes among the leading eight boats, however both Julian and Louise managed to pass Alan dropping him to 11th at the gun and John.N went ahead of James.C. Dave climbed from 20th to 17th leading J.C whilst Terry fell back from 18th to 22nd and last boosting Carolyn and Simon to 20th and 21st. respectively. With the Handicaps applied the winner was Laurence with Noel 2nd, Rupert 3rd and Jonty 4th. For full details see the table below.
