Bright
and sunny with high white, flat, cloud
as we left Hove for Piddinghoe. There was
no noticeable breeze and it was freezing cold. On uncovering the boat it was
discovered that the bailer had not been open and the whole aft cockpit area was
full of water and 5mm thick ice.
After
rigging, a light breeze began to fill in from the northwest, the Fisherman’s
bay area and the RO, Dave Murley, was able to set up a course – round the
outside of nearly all the marks – except the one in the southwest corner near
the clubhouse.
First
away was Laurence Venus (Streaker), a good length clear of Alan Simmons (Streaker)
who in turn was in turn half a length in front of Rupert Smith (Streaker).
Behind this batch Jo West (Laser full rig) was next to go ahead of Louise
Currell (Byte CII) and then Michael Veale and Mike Rosier (RS 200). Laurence
was first to round the windward mark, with Alan just ahead of Rupert, who then
powered past him on the subsequent reach. By the end of the lap Laurence had a
lead of 30 seconds over Rupert with Alan 10 seconds further behind. Fourth to
round was Jo West with Michael behind her and Bill Giles (Solution) sixth. Then
came Bill Wates (Laser full rig), Louise, Jamie Smith (Laser 4.7) and Penelope
Duncan (Laser Radial) in tenth. Chas Humphries(laser full rig) was eleventh
with Jo Whitehead (Laser Radial) astern of him and Penny Springall (Laser 4.7)
leading Andy Beck (Mirror) in last – 14th – place.
Lap
2, without a real beating leg, saw no change of order in the entire fleet and
it was not until the 3rd lap when Penelope passed Louise to lie 8th.
Lap
4 was not a lot more eventfull, with Laurence still in front of Rupert and Alan
and continuing to pull away, until Michael gained a place in passing Jo West..
Chas also passed Louise to lie 9th.
Lap
5 saw no further place changes and it was not until lap 6 when Penny passed Jo
Whitehead to lie 12th, Andy having finished at the end of his 5th
lap.
Lap
7, the final lap and again the only change was when Jo Whitehead got back in
front of Penny. Thus Laurence finished first some 50 seconds ahead of Rupert
with Alan a further minute and a half adrift. Michael was next and Jo West
behind him but ahead of Bill.G. After the handicaps were applied the results
were as shown below – which also incorporate the cadet results.

After
a short break for ‘coffee’ the second race of the day, race 8, was set in
motion over the same course – the cadets having started ahead of the main
fleet. In this race Jazz Sayed (Topper) joined the main fleet.
At
the Gun, for the main fleet, first to cross was Jazz, not far above the pin
mark, with Michael below her but moving faster. Next to go was Rupert with
Laurence astern but slightly further upwind and with Alan behind these two.
Rupert continued inshore before tacking onto port as Laurence had to duck under
Michel’s stern after tacking. Alan also dipped behind Bill.W to try to get further upwind before setting off to the
windward mark. Michael then found himself in clear air and rounded the winward
mark well out in front. Laurence found more breeze down below the lay line and
after a quick tack was second to round followed closely by Rupert with Alan
also close to hand. By the end of the lap the order was established with
Michael leading, Laurence second, Rupert third and Alan fourth. Next up was
Bill.W followed by Bill.G just 3 seconds behind. Louise was seventh just seven
seconds aft and Chas another six seconds behind her. Lying ninth was Jamie just
head of Penelope with Penny behind her and Jazz leading 13th placed
Andy in the mirror. Neither of the two Jo’s were on the water for this race.
Lap
2 was lead by Michael with the three Streakers, Laurence, Rupert and Alan
behind but Bill.G went ahead of Bill.W. Jazz passed Penny to lie 11th
with Andy as the tailender.
Lap
3 and Michael was still in the lead from Laurence but Alan snatched third place
from Rupert to lead him by eight seconds over the line. The order down the
fleet remained the same as in lap 2.
Lap
4 and the only change was as Bill.G overtook Rupert to lie 5th.
Lap
5 saw Rupert retake 4th place from Bill.G but there were no other
positional changes.
Lap
6 and Bill.G once again passed Rupert, and Bill.W also passed him, as Laurence
overtook Michael who had lead the fleet until then. This was also the final lap
for Andy in the Mirror.
Lap
7 saw Laurence extend away from Michael to lead him by 15 seconds across the
line as Rupert clawed back his fifth place from Bill.W.
Lap
8, the final lap was lead by Laurence from Michael and Alan came to a sticky
end as Bill.G caught him on starboard just after he had tack to clear the north
bank – and tack again. The complaint was that Alan had not tacked soon enough
to prevent Bill from changing course and requested a 720 degree turn. Alan
complies but in doing so let Bill.G, Rupert and Bill.W to pass him. Louise,
Chas and Penelope were the last three to finish as Jazz, Jamie and Penny had
finished the lap before. With Handicaps applied Laurence was the winner with
Rupert second, Jazz third and Alan fourth. Michael having lead for most of the
race however was placed eigth.
